Sony has always opted-out of the AMD's public driver program. It sucks. You have to wait for them to release their own certified driver.

Ugh well that's a huge fucking bummer....

What's the best to go about removing all the unneccessary bloatware/crapware that comes with the laptop?

Also let's say I want to about formating my laptop with a clean install of windows 7. This might sound silly but : if I have a key for w7 home premium 64bit, is a w7 home premium disc all I need to format?

Will I be able to use the laptop like normal from the getgo after a format? I.e will wlan/touchpad/etc work without installing wierd drivers?

Laptop GAF and (KJack):

I have a chance to buy a G73 (Core i7, 8 GB of RAM, Radeon 5870M) with an upgraded 17" 1080p screen for $850.

I can sell my G60JX for $650 (I paid $570) for it.

Should I spend $200 to upgrade to the G73? Is the i7, 4 more GB of RAM, and a 5870M along with a 17" 1080p screen (vs. my 16" 1366x768p screen) that much better than what I've got? And will the increase in performance be enough to handle 1080p?

I can do it on Friday.

Downsides: The non-Extreme mobile Core i7 in that laptop only overclocks to 2 Ghz, so it'll be slower than my Core i5 mobile overclocked to 3.1 Ghz.

Wait what ? 5870 for 850$ ? That's the deal of the month ! I wish I could take advantage of something similar. Go ahead and buy that bad boy. Unreal value for the price. The 5870 can handle basically anything at 720p. At 1080p, you should be fine as well with games coming out this year, The Witcher 2 and Skyrim will be torn into pieces.

that is a huge jump imo, the screen and 5870m are excellent upgrades. The 1080 screen at 17inch is like the best thing i've ever seen.

do a quick compare at http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-260M.14559.0.html

and for the record, my G73 was about 1500USD, you getting it at 850 is a pretty killer deal.

Cool, thanks! The guy I bought my G60JX from got a G73, and now he wants an Alienware M17x. So he said he'd throw in an extra 2 GB of RAM, an HDD caddy, both the 1080p and spare 900p screen, and a 750GB HDD... for $850. I bought my G60JX for $570 and I'm selling it for $650 so it's an $80 profit for me plus only $200 to upgrade.

I'm hoping to have it on Friday. Can't wait to overclock that bad-ass GPU and maybe slap in a Core i7 Extreme M into it.

Really liking my ASUS G73SW-XA1 so far. I haven't been able to actually play any games on it yet, but once I'm done with school and I install Steam on it that will change. :D

You don't have to wait for Sony's drivers. I have a Vaio with ATI too and I just download the latest drivers, mobility modded so they work on any laptop, from the Guru 3D forums. You can mobility mod them yourself but it's easier to just downloaded pre-modded drivers.

Regarding the bloat ware you can safely uninstall anything with the word "Vaio" or "Sony" or whatever in the name. The only thing I would keep is the Recovery Center for obvious reasons.

If you don't jump on that, I will find and kill you.

And the Core i7 will destroy the i5, in every circumstance.

Nice! please post some impressions, I still haven't buy it because of money issues, but I'm planning to buy it soon and any info will be greatly appreciated.

Haha, alright. I'll buy it ASAP. Also, does the i7 @ 2 Ghz destroy my i5 @ 3.1 Ghz? :\

Also, the deal has been sweetened: The m17x r2 that the guy is buying has 2x 256GB SSD's in RAID, and he only wants one SSD.

So he's willing to sell me one of those 256 GB SSD's for like $200. I already have a 90 GB OCZ Vertex 2 so I can sell that...

Yeah impressions would be great. Looking at this and HP Dv6t (6770). Can't decide..Help!?!

Well, the GTX 460M kills the 6770M, with no effort applied. This G53 is the best deal @ $1,199.

Yoooo how much for the OCZ? I might want that....

The Core i5 only hits 3Ghz when one core in in use, right? That is not an advantage.

No sir, I use ThrottleStop by unclewebb + SetFSB. My Core i5 is hitting 3.2 Ghz on max stable overclock even with all 4 cores @ 100%.

If you're not using ThrottleStop, you're missing out. You can force any Core i5/i7 to run @ max overclock whether all 4 cores are at 0% or 100%. It's an amazing program. I can show screenshots to demonstrate it in action with Prime95...

If I get the 256GB SSD, I'll sell the OCZ 90 GB Vertex 2 for $100.

Hey everyone, I'm currently in the market for a laptop. My main focuses with this laptop are music production, although decent gaming capabilities would be a plus. I've been looking around everywhere.

My budget is anywhere from about 800-1200$ USD. I can stretch the budget a bit if it would be worth it. I'm not much of a graphics whore so playing on max everything isn't much of a concern, especially since I have a pretty good desktop setup. One important factor to me is aesthetics and comfort as well. I don't want a desktop replacement or anything too bulky. Preferably the weight should be around 6-7 lbs, and battery life isn't much of a concern, but is always a plus. I mean, a few hours worth of simple web browsing would be great.

I've been looking to ASUS N-Series, HP DV6T, and some Sager/Clevo notebooks (although I'm not a fan of how they look, etc.) Also I've just recently looked into the Sony VAIO brand, are those generally avoided for gaming and music production? I hear they have fantastic screens.

Anyway, main focuses I need answers for are: brand, type of GPU/CPU, or general laptop recommendations overall.

I got shipping notification for my DV7t this morning! Ordered on 4/23/2011, and I know a lot of you have been waiting for much much longer... so I expect a lot of shiny new laptops to make their way to doorsteps next week.

Ok, we have the same specs (minus the screen). Some were theorizing that some specific part was holding back some of the laptops. Guess not. My build date is 5/11, so hopefully I get sped up too :/.

Yeah, my build date was 5/23. I think that the build dates are pretty much bullshit. It'll get shipped whenever it's finished... hopefully sooner rather than later.

This.

So, theres this HP ENVY 17 on newegg for 900~.
It has a 5850 and the last gen i7/1080p, etc. Slot loading blu-ray drive.

How is the trade off on sandy bridge dv6s vs this? Is the 5850 that much better than the 6770 that I should cancel my order and get this envy?

What do you think, K. Jack?

Got my laptop; I love it so far. Even the design itself is pretty awesome; I love the metallic/copper look to it :D

Qusetion about GPU temps while gaming (and it has been the same for my previous laptop)

68-73C while gaming

is this a healthy temp? When should I start worrying? Measured with speedfan.

Idle is 50.

edit: fuck fuck fuck I think I'm seeing a dead pixel. FUCK. Do I get a replacement if I call? FUCK. I can't afford to be without a laptop for more than a day due to school.

Edit: LOL It was a dust speck. Jesus christ my heart.

^ Hehe. I've got a stuck red pixel on my Clevo though :( I guess I'll have to call them up and see if it's covered.

Lucky you because one dead pixel is almost never considered a defect but an acceptable flaw. Very few manufacturers have 100% pixel guarantee. Some of them have critera like "has to be at least 3, close to the center of the screen".

Ive been thinking of getting gaming laptop, whats gaf general consensus on the alienware 14mx? Ive been reading good things about it, not too big nor too small, packs some power, etc Any thoughts gaf?

So I have the choice between buying my friend's G73JH (Core i7 720m, 8 GB of RAM, 5870 Mobility) for $850 as posted previously, OR the Alienware M17x R1 he got for $550 today. The M17x R1 has a Core 2 Quad 9000, dual 260M GTX's in SLI + 9400M integrated graphics, and 4 GB of RAM with a 17" 1920x1200 screen. The processor is a downgrade from my Core i5 520m, but the graphics are a big upgrade.

So...?

I'm leaning towards the G73 since it has a much nicer processor and runs cooler with 2x the RAM.

Anyone here seen deals for the following:

17+ inch screen
6970m or 485m
6+gb ram

Under 1300? I don't care about portability or battery life. In addition, I want to run things on very high settings but don't care if I have to down the resolution to 720p.

Also, is the 3D pointless if it's on a 460m? I mainly am going to want to play Duke Nukem Forever, Witcher 2 and so on.

Finally, what's the opinion here on the build quality and last of Sager and Alienware?

Do it. That 5850m spanks the 6770m HARD, by about 30-40%. Also, last gen i7 is super fast. That Envy is very close to the G73 I'm getting in terms of speed. The 5850m can be overclocked to 5870m+ speeds, has the same hardware in it.

Let's put it this way: when you're PC gaming and encounter a game that isn't running as fast as it could on max settings, you're not going to be saying 'gee, so glad I have this Sandy Bridge i7!' No, you're going to kick yourself and say 'fuck, why didn't I get a 5850m instead of this 6770m!?'

For example: My 360M GTS in my G60JX rocks... for the resolution I play at, 1366x768. But I'm upgrading to a 5870m equipped G73 because I'll be able to play at 1920x1080... at FASTER framerates than my 360M GTS put out at a drastically lower resolution.

It's the same situation with a 6770m vs a 5850m.

In the market for a laptop, $1000 dollar budget with taxes +-$50USD. Looking for something that should game at least medium to high @720p 30fps on most modern games (exempting stuff like metro2033). Biggest priority is reliability, want this thing to remain functional and solid for at least 3-4 years (may not necessarily keep up graphically), as I'm pretty burnt out on the 2.5 year old dell I've got with a year old busted hinge and slowdowns becoming more and more apparent every day despite my best efforts. Also needs bluetooth. No blue ray if you can help it, would rather the money go elsewhere

There you go.

Best Buy also has refurbished G73's for $900.

Im fairly certain the ASUS G73JH is still the best value gaming laptop around.

The ATI 5870m has been serving me so very well.

Nah, apparently they have to have to call and have you reconfirm your order if they delay or something. If you don't respond, they have to cancel.

My shipping date hasn't changed, btw.

Not true.

It's just a notice of a delay and gives you the opportunity to cancel. If you don't respond, they send it out.

Mine's coming on Monday finally. It's already in town but at FedEx until then. :(

Looking at the release notes for catalyst 11.4

" The following notebooks are not compatible with this release:

Any notebook launched after this driver release
Switchable Graphics enabled notebooks using Intel® chipsets.
Toshiba® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
Sony® VAIO® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
Panasonic® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)

"
So what the fuck does this mean?

edit : regarding vaio bloatware : is it just better to do a format from the getgo or can I remove the shit simply by uninstalling it?

edit : " Graphics Driver (ATI) - 8.723.8.2 64 bits
229.12 MB 19/11/2010"

thats the latest drivers I can find for my laptop on Sonys site.

What
is
going
on?

1. You're always better doing a re-format/re-install. I'd take an image of the HDD before doing that though, just in case you need to send it in for warranty service.

2. Try this: Mobility Modder. It basically alters some of the AMD OEM drivers so they're not blocked from certain laptops. I had to use this for my old HP because I couldn't install AMD drivers and couldn't get some games to run right with the outdated HP drivers they had on their website. It hasn't been updated in ages but it's worth a shot.

I had a friend that was about to take $400, head to best buy or walmart and, buy something thinking it would run games. I hope I did the right thing by stopping him.

So then I had this mission to find a laptop for a friend that could play World of Warcraft.
I was only given $400 exactly and, absolutely could not spend a penny more.

I ended up getting him a near mint condition but, used Lenovo Y550 for exactly $400 shipped.

*15.6 inch matte backlit screen (Looks pretty decent)
*2.4ghz p8600 (Ranked #90 on the notebookcheck list.)
*4GB DDR3 533 (samsung)
*500GB 5200 rpm HDD
*NEW* (6 cell battery)
*Geforce GT 130M (GDDR3 512MB DX10)
*Windows 7 Professional x64
*Dolby® Home Theater™ with built in subwoofer
*3D Mark 06 = ~6600

I don't think I did too bad considering the lack of DX 10.1/11, and no back-lit keys. I figured the larger screen size would help him out when playing an MMORPG. It's a 2 core system I know but, it was about the best I could find for $400 with a decent CPU and GPU. It should run WOW very nicely, I hope and, it has HDMI Video and Audio out. I expect it will run quite a few current games on decent settings.

Well, I guess that's the best you could do.

Man, after seeing that... I'm really getting a steal on the G73JH-A2 for $850 huh? The guy is throwing in the 1920x1080 upgraded screen for free along with the old 1600x900 one, extra RAM, extra hard drive...

I'll have the laptop tomorrow. Will post benchmark comparisons between G60JX overclocked and G73 overclocked. Should be interesting to see the performance boost.

Doesn't have bluetooth but I guess I can live with a usb dongle. How is the processor for emulation, say ps2 and dolphin emus? EDIT nvm found it

So... looking for a laptop that can play Starcraft2, Shogun Total War and then Diablo3 eventually... Mainly a rig to play games at a fairly high setting / streaming videos is what i'm looking for.

Loose budget's around 1200 (will pay more if you know of something that's a bit better to recommend)

I saw http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230027 was recommended earlier. And it looks pretty good. Just wondering if there was anything better (since FromTheFuture said he was music focused and i definitely would like to try to see some games at hi-graphics settings)

Thanks in advance!
