Viewtiful joe, and Okami too.

Capcom has so many games on this list, but there aren't many from this gen. Whatever happened to them? Asura's wrath looks interesting though, but they're just publishing it.

Edit: How has no one said this yet...

Not many games have tried Black and White. Its unique if nothing else.

And one of the early games noted for its art, Out of This world/Another world

i live black and white films, yet could not play madworld for more than a few minutes. the game was a a severe eye strain.

Because it is bad. It has a nice style, but direction wise it is all over the place:

For example: Do I have to jump over the middle section or can I walk on it? It's completely unreadable.

For me, art direction is the overall aesthetics of the world, not art's application in gameplay. Anyway, it's pacman, so jumping over will do.

Unfortunately, a good art director at a game dev studio has to think about how the art will communicate gameplay and functions. It's not just overall aesthetics. Form follows function, not the other way around.

This thread is much better, the other one is making me rage.

I find it amusing that Halo is getting such a beating in the "games with bad art direction" thread. When it came out, Halo was one of the first games to truly do expansive outdoor environments. The character models have always been a problem for Bungie, but environmentally, I'd argue that Halo has been a great series through this decade.

I mean, the tech in Halo 1 probably didn't allow for much flexibility in terms of art direction at the time, and that is what they keep posting screens of.

I find the art direction in Reach and Halo 3 to be pretty spot on; although I have to say I probably prefer Reach's style a bit more since it is subdued. I really love the look of the new multiplayer maps that came on the anniversary disc, <3 Ridgeline.

Okami is still kind of the pinnacle for me, not just visually, but how the sound and visuals played off each other and the gameplay. It's an amazing, deeply moving game.

Think Mirror's Edge and the LostWinds games also deserve a spot on this list. Again, not just visually, but how the visuals and audio worked together to add such feeling to those games.
