Games you remember, names you don't

easy Blood Bros.

as for alternatives, there's Blood Bros pseudo prequel, Cabal a gangster themed blood bros named Hard Times a pirate themed clone named..heh...Pirates and Alligator Hunt (space, sci fi) all released around the same time.

Most recent clone i know of is Gamshara (mitchell/capcom 2003)

Also try: NAM75 on NeoGeo (and arcade obviously) and, Wild Guns on Snes, which is probably the best alternative to Blood Bros ever.
There's also a pretty cool G.I Joe game in the same vein from Konami (was also 4-player):

Ok this is really obscure. The game was released in the early 80s, I think it was for the first MSX system, I know it was cartridge based at least. Ok description: You`re this bluish robot that flies around shooting things, the robot does not transform so it's not Thextder or whatever that game was called. Anyway the game scrolls horizontally and the distinguishing feature is that every once in a while there is a crater/hole in the ground at the bottom of the screen that you can enter, and when you do enter the game switches to a one on one fighting game versus another robot. There are 4 or 5 different robots that you can fight in these craters and you can beat them in two ways: either kick their ass until they have no health left or if you manage to push them to one end of the "arena", you can push them into a pit at the edge of the screen...

Once you beat them you get a power up for your gun that you can use outside the crater to shoot the flying enemies. I think there were 8 stages or something like that. I remember the name being CXRoid, but back then I didn't know english very well and the font used on the cartridge was pretty fucked up so I always had the feeling that I'm reading it wrong, google confirms that.
After a little search, I suppose it's "Alpha Roid" (well, the logo seems "CXRoid" :D)

A game on the Commodore 64.

First level involved cowboys on a moving train, towards the end of the level you had to use a pulley mechanism to keep you moving along the track.

Game was cool, but can't remember much more and definitely can't remember the name.

Express Raider?

Don't have enough info for anyone to help me, but there was one game on genesis where you could pick different characters who each has a different power. I think I remember an old guy who could summon thunder bolts, and I know I'd recognize it if I saw it.

Has bothered me my entire life because It was so fun, and I never see it in genesis collections or anything. Was an action game btw.

does anyone know the name of an arcade game where you sit on an actual scooter or vespa and the goal of the game is to deliver as many pizzas as possible until the timer runs out( you get more time with each delivery) and you were pizza boy

Sort of reminds me of Zan in Streets of Rage 3

that's one thanks too many, i only guessed 2 (came back to this thread too late to suggest dragon spirit :) )

That's + 2 for me, someone should keep scores :)

I have a couple:

This game on the Spectrum or a similar Keyboard-based--games-were-in-cassettes based console you were like a crab which went into the sea and there were ocean creatures or birds which would fly by as you tried to avoid them to get to the surface

A side scrolling Snes beat em up which had a bison and ryu rip of i think.

A beat em up i played in the arcade which had a win quote where a girl called someone grotty.

A PS beat em up where i think its 2 player and you go around fighting in isometric view fighting and shotting shit at each other.

Don't know the rest, but that sounds like Destrega. I'd give you a link or something, but I'm at work not working!

Most likely Final Fight.

Well, it's not a sidescrolling beat 'em up but rather a fighting game, but I believe you're thinking of Waku Waku 7.

Wow! Thank you thank you thank you! Of course, alpha roid, should've thought of that! Haha it looks surprisingly similar to what I remember all those years ago.

yep, i think that's correct.

Bingo.

Actually this sounds like Rival Turf /Rushing Beat, or Brawl Brothers / Rushing Beat Ran.

I think this one is correct.

A PC game from the 90s where you control a flying island, you build stuff like cannons and spikes on it and then battle other flying islands by ramming into them or shooting them.

Can anyone remember the name? I really hope it wasn't a drug-induced dream.

Oh my god. I know exactly what you're talking about. I only ever played the demo, so the name totally escapes me. But it seemed really really fun.

I'm gonna have to research this now.

Don't worry, you aren't crazy.

Awesome! I might have also played the demo.

First game I have any memory of playing. I think it was for the atari 2600. The screen/background was predominately blue and there was a pink squid type thing that you had to kill? My brother called it killing Krang (from the Ninja Turtles cartoon).

It's a game similar to Skullmonkeys and The Neverhood in its art style. It has a scene where the main character is hiding in a place inside a cubboard box. Then an alien (one of the ones he's fighting) comes and take a dumb in a small plate or bowl-like "toilet" right next to the box. He leaves his gun next to him on the floor, the main character tries to grab the gun, then the alien sees him, the main character grabs something but then he finds out that the alien put his dumb for him to grab.

That's all I remember of the game. So do you know its name?

There's one called "The Aethra Chronicles", I'm not sure if that's the "Aretha" you're alluding to?

OMG googled it up and found a video of it on youtube and that was it!!! Thanks a lot man!

Ok I got one, although this is going to be tough since this is a Japanese game that never saw a release in the US as far as I know. Hoping Japan-GAF can help!

This was a Super Famicom / SNES title by Banpresto. It was basically a dodgeball game that featured a ton of SD characters from Gundam, Ultraman, and Kamen Rider... May have been other franchises, but those are the ones I recall clearly.

I remember me and my buddy ended up playing this for HOURS and HOURS even though we didn't understand any of the menus - but the gameplay itself was fun and once we discovered each character had a kind of super move, we were hooked.

I've been trying to remember this game for years.

PC game circa 1994-1996ish. First person perspective, playing as a heavy gunner - I think all you can do is turn and aim, but that might be wrong. You're trying to take out UFO's, kind of like a 3D Missile Command. It was really basic, just point at the bad guys and fire until you blow them up. I think it takes place on Mars or some kind of barren planet. Don't remember anything else except for it had nice lighting (for the time) and the music was fuckin dope.

Any help? I want to say "Radar" was in the title, but that might be reaching.

Saturn or Sega CD game where the main characters are animals that turn into balls and they're all different colors... that's all I remember about it :lol

Looking for a overhead contra type of shooter for Genesis. You play as 3 characters, one huge bulky guy, a skinny skeleton character, and a girl. Not sure many other details just remember weapon upgrades and lots of enemies.

That sounds like Battle Dodge Ball, great game, my local shop has a copy of it for dirt cheap, I think I'll pick it up soon :)

Incoming? Only one level took place on the turret, but that otherwise fits the general description (a little later than the time you're describing). I believe there was a demo which was just the turret level, which might be why you're not recalling the other parts.

Dude...! That's it - thank you! *bows*

Alright GAF, while I maybe a newcomer, I think i have a hard nut to crack!

I used to play this game on Commodore 64.
You are a frog, and your goal is to eat flies.
You see yourself (the frog) on the left side of the screen, flies come down from above on the right side of the screen.
The gameplay is the catch on this one..
Each number, (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0?) on your keyboard would send your frog to a different height, and he would leash out his tongue, with a varying length to actually catch the fly.

The graphics, i think, used the same 2 blue colours you see when you boot up your C64. I had the game on a 5,4" floppy.

I remember calling it "Frog" or "Frogger", but obviously, thats a mixup from early childhood and similarities with frogger :P I am not sure if this was a commercial game, or just some homebrew (as it seems, my dad back then got homebrew from his friend who sold us the C64).

Even if you don't remember the name yourself, has anyone played this?

P.S: Yes, i really liked this game :P

Their was a game on the 64 I can't remember the title. Car combat of some type. I remeber playing..capture the flag I think in cars. You could choose different classes of car (heavy, Light) the multiplayer was some sort of 2 v 2 base-type-deal. Lot's of steel and broken buildings.

PM me if you know wtf game this is.

There was a spaceship sim on the C-64 ages ago that I can't remember the name of. It had a cardboard cutout for the keyboard and vector style graphics. I remember that you could leave the ship in a pod and remote fly the main ship around like an R/C airplane. There were tons of sectors to explore and succeeding in doing certain objectives revealed missing parts of a mystery picture. Any ideas anyone? This is killing me.

Some old games I cant remember:

1. NES game my parents rented me as a kid. It had a kid with a baseball bat meeting monsters and turning int oa bat as well I think?

2. Old NES game a friend and I played. You were a dinosaur I think and had to doge cavemen and eat things. Then at times u would grow superbig and be able to eat the cavemen?

3. Old arcade machine in a local store I played a few times. You were a knight walking to the end of the level, blocking and dodging swords, knives and such thrown at you, then fighting another knight at the end of the level. (Included pieces of armor coming off as your health went down.)

I'd like to find out those three if possible.

Trog?

Monster Party and Trog are right! :D

The Gladiator one is close, but I seem to remember the knight being more of a white/silver/gold knight and the setting was a forest and there were no fireballs or such. But otherwise its pretty close.

For anyone wondering what this title is, its called "Back to Nature" (And not FROG, as i believed it to be named). You can read more about it here if you feel a need for it :)

I'm really scraping the back of my memory with this one, but it was a PS1 game and in the opening cinematic it showed a host of characters, one of whom was a woman who I'm pretty sure held up the testicles of someone to the screen. I thing the game was isometric, almost top-down in viewpoint, and could be played in co-op. I remember the first level walking through a base shooting people.

Sorry can't get more vague than that.

Edit: Found it, it was called Re-Loaded.

Glad you figured it out for him. All that came to mind for me was Frog Bog for Intellivision and Frogs 'n Flies for Atari 2600.

I remember the demo too.

EDIT: Gaf moves too damn fast :lol

Can someone figure this out:

- Mid-late 80s arcade game (played it often at the Bally's arcade in my hometown when I was a kid)
- Isometric view, pseudo-3d-like graphics
- Controlled a futuristic Tron-like motorcycle, able to shoot enemy vehicles on the road
- Stayed on a relatively straight path in 3/4 view, can go off some ramps and gaps on the road via boost pads

Anyone...?

I'm looking for a PC indie game that wasn't released in stores, but through the website you could download it and/or order a disc copy. It was a space shooter, I think with a top down view, with 360 degree movement. I only played a demo, but basically you chose different areas on a map to go to, I think to mine minerals or something, and once you cleared out the enemies you got all the resources and such that were there. Between levels you could use the money to upgrade your ship.

I know I'll recognize it as soon as I see it. I always meant to order the game someday, and the ads ran for a really long time, but I realized recently that I don't see them anymore but I would still like to go back and order it.

::edit::
Crap, knew I should have looked a little harder before posting here. Figured it out on my own.

Game was Starscape, by Moonpod games.
