GameSpot: Kojima to leave Konami after MGSV, power struggle, communications embargo

My take is that Konami wasn't pleased with him really wanting to be done with the series this time. Konami has fuck-all to do with games anymore, so another AAA game might be difficult to facilitate, especially one that wasn't MGS. So Kojima said OK LATER and his loyal KojiPro team followed suit to leave... and be contractors for Konami until December.

I guess Infinity Ward would be the best comparison? KojiPro now has eight months to court publishers to find a new home (HI SONY HEARD YOU MADE LOTSA MONEY LATELY) and they would be a super appealing acquisition.

I have no idea how IP works in Japan. Kojima said he doesn't want anyone else touching Solid Snake. Since he's the creator, does that limit Konami's use with the IP?

As for THE PHANTOM PAIN, I've been hearing that game has been done, could have even had a June release! Everything from now until it goes gold is just playtesting and polish.

The inevitable post-credits scene at the end of PHANTOM PAIN is going to be emotional as fuck.

you meant the engine that was developed as an employee of konami?

under konami's direction?...

With konami's money? ...

Yeah he'll keep it i bet

"Konami's direction"

lol. Theyre faceless suits giving money to the actual visionaries, nothing more. It's a shame they're the ones that reep the benefits, but that's business.

Kojima + Naughty Dog. DO IT.

I would literally kill for this to happen.

This reminds me of what happened with Pixar and Disney. In that case, Eisner at Disney refused to make a deal with Pixar. Eisner ended up leaving because the stockholders went berserk over that decision. Pixar basically took over Disney after Eisner left.

This is similar. Konami is letting Kojima Productions go but there is no stockholder outrage (not yet anyway).

Kojima productions became too big for Konami and wanted too much money I'm guessing.

I don't care what Konami does with MGS after Kojima moves on TBH. Sure, I'll keep an eye and see what happens but unless something unbelievable happens, I don't see it keeping any trace of its current level of quality.

MG is synonymous with Kojima for me and it probably should have ended a good while ago as he himself wanted. Shame for the infiltration genre but it's time to move on IMO.

Fuck.

I'll also seriously have to consider if I want to give Konami that extra money.
Yeah, fuck. I should correct my statement that the KojiPro staff getting left in the dust is really the worst part though. Most of the staff will probably be fired, and likely will have very low chances of being picked up by companies that will use their experience well. Unless Kojima can shepherd most of his staff, this is as bad as any other studio shutdown (which, even with a new studio, he can't truly save everyone). So much "invisible" talent being sacrificed for nothing.

My interest is instantly piqued and at the same time killed for the documentary. I want to see what happened, but they might go so far as to cut nearly everything from the production. I'm glad Kojima is free, but his staff are going to be cut loose, and we likely won't get the final look at the end of MGS that they promise with the Collector's edition.
That's so true, I don't even feel the pain anymore.

It sucks that Silent Hills is pretty much dead too. I was excited to become a fan of the franchise, but now I guess I'll have to wait for Konami to die and hopefully auction its IPs off to new owners.

Geez, why the sad faces people?

This is a good thing, the man needed to move on. Imagine what he can do with a new IP? As for Metal Gear, the series needed a reboot anyways.

What about all the people who put their heart and soul into this game, that don't have the name Kojima?

So the OT title now has to be

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain |OT| A Hideo Kojima Game

Right??

Yes. The fans owe it to him and every staff member who helped build this game.

As a fan I'd happily see any non-Kojima Metal Gear Solid die if it doesn't have Kojima's approval.

I've seen what Konami have done to Castlevania, Silent Hill, and even Bomberman.

After MGSV Konami can go fuck themselves.

I can't believe Konami is salting the earth that their own company stands on just to satiate their own egos.

Incompetence of the highest caliber.

Kojima will 100% be part of a new studio with a new IP announced within the next 8 months, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's incredibly happy about it. MGS5 will be the masterpiece we deserve and he can do whatever he wants.

Silent Hills :(
Fuck. I want that game to come out and I want Kojima to make it, but after this he should have nothing to do with Konami.
Sigh. Konami wtf.

This didn't happen for Inafune's departure, so I don't think this will happen. Pixar as an entity left Disney, but only Kojima and some higher ups are leaving and Konami still retains the rights to their cash cow IP, so they may convince stockholders that is fine enough.

Preach.

Also I just realized, what the hell would he call his studio if he goes independent? Konami owns his own name now, ugh.

"Kojima Productions" is already a perfect name for an independent studio.

I don't know if it's a matter of principle rather than just plain incompetence.

Well yeah I just mean principled to them. I want to say Someone was on giant bomb not too long ago (Dave Lang?) and talked about how dealing with Japanese publishers regarding old and unused IPs is like pulling teeth.

But those same stockholders will say "Okay so MGS5 sells, then what?"

The worst thing about this is that I'm worried that this Patriot-like censorship may actually compromise the making of documentary included in the collector's edition. That's the main thing I'm looking forward to in that, and it may get hacked to pieces to either hide what truly went wrong between Kojima and Konami. Or, an even worse possibility, they might even go so far as to edit Kojima out of as much of it as possible, I'd never buy and MGS game again I think.

Maybe Kojima will get Cihi'd by Konami?

I bet there is whole book full of Kojimas ideas for future metal gear games. Like the one with boss and the cobra unit during ww2.

This is really terrible news. Konami really shot themselves in the foot with this.

I am also not holding my breath for Silent Hills being what I had initially hoped it to be if Kojima and his team aren't going to work on it.

There is only two acceptable outcomes: Sony creates a new studio for Kojima and let's him and his team have at it or Kojima creates his own and enters a second-party partnership with Sony's WWS. Anything else is going to be a bad decision on the part of everyone involved.

Also, painful as it is, let's just quickly accept that Silent Hills is dead and move on. I can't cope with losing it all over again. Let it fucking go.

Ha ha, yeah Kojima is pretty much one of the only things keeping Konami on the map in my mind, so this looks like a terrible choice.
I guess Konami own MGS though...sigh. I don't want to imagine anyone else other than Kojima behind it. I hope MGR2 is still in the works though...

They did this to the voice actor of Silent Hill 2's protagonist?

They're incompetents. I'm sure of that.

They don't need to be part of gaming. They've squandered and ruined everything they could. They can continue to make health supplements for casino tables, or whatever the fuck they do.

Kojima should tie up all loose ends in this game so Konami can't make any Metal Gear shit that isn't a wild bullshit spin-off.

In the Gamespot article:
"Konami Digital Entertainment, including Mr. Kojima, will continue to develop and support Metal Gear products. Please look forward to future announcements."

What does it mean exactly ? Does it only concern MGS V ?

It certainly means that, in that MGSV is a future MGS product. It also probably means that Kojima might stick around in some limited capacity to oversee support of MGS online.

PR to dodge the question. "Will continue to work" means he is working on Metal Gear Solid V still...

Precisely chosen words. They don't have to confirm any changes (to them being contractors etc.)

I'd bet money the next mainline Metal Gear without Kojima will be a semi-reboot to Metal Gear 3 which will reuse any Solid element they possibly can(Wolf, Liquid, Mantis, Mei-Ling, Otacon, etc.)

This just seems surreal right now though. It's kinda hard to believe Konami would just sack Kojima like this over a power struggle.

I mean there has always been a power struggle in the past but maybe this was just the last straw?
