GameSpot: Kojima to leave Konami after MGSV, power struggle, communications embargo

When heavens divide...

I will dive into the fire
Spilling the blood of my desire
The very last time
My name scorched into the sky

When heavens divide
I will see the choices within my hands
How can we ever protect and fight with our tiny souls
Let me shine like the sun through the doubts and fear
Do you feel the storm approach as the end draws near?

Konami is trying to take Kojima's own goddamn name from him. We can't let that happen. #AHIDEOKOJIMAGAME

edit: Nice variation D dog. The OT (remember, "Metal Gear Solid V OT: A Hideo Kojima Game") should have a bunch of avatar templates included for easy appliance.

The dissection of the game's story from this angle is going to be massive isn't it.

Yep. MGSV = Kojima finally "breaking bad" and doing things like killing kids in his game. Getting revenge on the industry for muzzling him. Rejecting everything MGS4 stood for.

Hence the symbology of Big Boss coming and literally saving Kojima in Ground Zeroes, w/Kojima mirroring Kaz in the Sins of the Father trailer as, note, "A visionary robbed of his future." ("Snake, what took you so long?")

I'm probably still in the denial phase of grieving.

This has to be fake, right? This is Joakim were talking about. The master of trolls. He set up a fake video game company to mess with us.

Surely these announcements are part of an elaborate troll...

It just pisses me off, why can't Konami give Kojima and his team a break from Metal Gear. I mean they worked on this series for fucking 27 years now. Kojima always said yes but of course there comes a time where he's just done with it... he wanted to left the series after MGS2 but he always returned and said ok i'll do another one so that mr. konami is pleased.

Kojima always tried to improve the series. MGSV for example looks to be the most ambitious game ever. They put all their heart into this game and created a fucking new engine for over 5 years now. Opened a new company in LA so they can work on another Metal Gear Online. Troy Baker said "MGSV may be the biggest game I've ever seen." But nooo it's not enough for mr. konami.

Kojima said he sleeps 4 hours a day to be most productive during the day.

The most disgusting and disrespectful thing is the erasing of Kojima's branding of all Metal Gear products.

What a terrible sendoff for someone who made Konami what it is today.

It's so sickening, I don't even know what to say anymore.

I really hpe they settle this problem otherwise I and you must boycott MGSV and Silent Hills and every other Konami titles (because all credits will go to Konami only then and not Kojima) until Kojima comes back to Konami.

I wouldn't even be so fucking man if they just didn't take his name off the box. I didn't want Kojima to leave like this but when you disregard everything he and his team worked for...I can't ever support a Konami product again.

But then again what the hell does Konami even have after MGSV?

Now you're getting me worked up. Heck, if I were a PES player, I'd drop that game and play FIFA, even if it didn't impact them at all.

But yeah, this is the most dickish move I've seen in the industry, even worse than Activision suit against former Infinity Ward founders because they were looking for another job.

They got soccer/football and yugioh, so 2 sorta money makers(not sure how yugioh does anymore)

This might have already been answered, but how will this affect Silent Hills collaboration with Kojima and del Toro? Isn't Kojima Productions also working on that?

I always knew this day would come, but not like this. Sad that it had to happen before Silent Hills and Rising Revengence 2 and that Konami had to end it on such a sour note.

On the brightside though i'm sure Kojima will have no trouble finding somewhere to fund his games if he does end up doing another one.

I ain´t gonna do that,this is kojima´s final game.

Wait, so Kojima's name means nothing without the Metal Gear IP behind it and that's why Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was a flop outside Japan. Makes sense.

I never said that Metal Gear IP was a guaranteed seller, nor that Kojima's name means nothing without MGS.....just that non-MGS Kojima titles have not fared very well. You asked me to name a Kojima-directed flop, and Peace Walker is one.

What spurred this conversation in the first place was the question of how marketable/desirable Kojima is as a designer/director in today's AAA job market. In that sense you have to consider what he's capable of without the MGS IP, and if he can make something that suits the market's current tastes. ZoE wasn't popular because it had mechs -- well that's kind of on the game's designers and producers, isn't it? Kojima is a desirable hire because he created one of the most popular and enduring franchises of the last couple decades.....but at the same time he takes 4-7 years to make a game and the titles he turns out are often in an anachronistic cinema-heavy style that doesn't play as well as it used to.

Ultimately MGS5's commercial and critical performance will probably determine where he lands.

"Those who don't exist"

I'm literally going to wait a week to buy MGS5 used, so Konami can't have my money.

That week is going to be fucking awful.

EDIT: Posts saying Kojima's name means nothing without Metal Gear. Thats pretty redundant. The guy made literally the best game ever made, I wouldn't be surprised if he had to hire ANOTHER assistant to field all the job offers he will get to head studios for Sony and MS while he finishes up his opus.

Nintendo, jump on this opportunity. Fuck Konami

It'd be funny if Nintendo lures Kojima/Del Toro and transforms Silent Hills into Eternal Darkness II for the Nintendo NX console... In 2004 Silicon Knights remakes a Kojima game, in 2017 Kojima creates a SK sequel... :p Just think about the irony...

Now, I'm sad thinking about the possibility of Silent Hills being cancelled or changed so much it won't be like P.T. :( That game is the main reason I bought a PS4...

If people want to start a collection. I really suggest people start now. Purchase all Kojima related MGS games and even Snatcher and Policenauts if you can.

I have a feel the games that actually credit Kojima may become valuable/hard to find.

I ain´t gonna do that,this is kojima´s final game.

I know, but all credits will go to Konami and not him and I will never support Konami after his departure news. But I really hope this is just another tricky maneuver just like The Phantom Pain , Moby Dick Studios and Joakim Morgen con :D

Wow I'm actually surprised at how pissed I am they took off "A HIDEO KOJIMA GAME"

That sentence is iconic, and no matter how hard Konami might think otherwise, the fans will never forget.

Here's hoping that MGSV will be unaffected by Konami's stupidity.
Next thing you know he'll be completely removed from the game's ending credits as well.

The fuck's wrong with you Konami? You are a shell of your former self as it is but without Kojima and MGS and I assume Silent Hills you're dead to me. I couldn't give a damn about PES if I tried so no Goemon, no Castlevania, no Contra, no SH, no MGS, you're might as well be dead to me.

Konami will go down after this. Kojima is the only element keeping then relevent.

Indeed, he even helped them with Castlevania and thanks to him it kinda succedeed. And I had a little shaft of hope regarding the revival of Silent Hill. Now I have to just to put the series in the nostalgy archives. R.I.P Silent Hill !

Don't underestimate the millions upon millions that PES brings Konami every year. You and I may not be the target of that game but make no mistake: the biggest bread winner for Konami is PES. And only after that is MGS and Kojima.

The problem is that PES is no longer the flagship Football game icon everyone used to love and prefer over FIFA. It is the total opposite now for many years.

So what issue does Konami have with Kojima exactly? Is it an issue of Branding?

Is Konami suddenly upset that Kojima's name is more at the forefront of the branding than Konami's? I can understand Konami's apprehension in this case because they are footing the bill and would want the company's name to be at the forefront rather than a single employees name even if it happens to be the creator of MGS and one of the greatest game creators out there. I am sure ND and Sony would not necessarily have every ND game advertising to be precedded by 'A Neil Druckman & Bruce Straley' game for example or From's publishers being sidelined in the branding and the Big M getting all the branding attention. But while I understand the challenges in being in this situation the way Konami is going about this is pathetic.

I feel like this should be added to the OP, people seem to think Metal Gear is holding Konami as a whole together with duct tape.

The majority of Gaffers are not from Japan so losing Metal Gear means that Konami and Konami's products might as well not exist to them. As a video game developer that made games that many in the Western markets enjoyed, losing Metal Gear is the final nail.

I hope everything will be fine and a new era will begin after the eclipse of tomorrow (I know Kojima is found of such events and he never skips any opportunity to use it in his favor.

Konami, as a company, isn't going anywhere. It has other business interests other than video games. Its slot machine sales & maintenance arm alone does just fine.

Now, could Konami decide to spin off its video game arm? Sure. With a potential impasse for future MGS games (Who will get the rights?) and other Kojima-led IP, and with its other IP outside of PES buried in crypts somewhere at Konami HQ next to the remains of the Hudson Bee, perhaps negotiating a deal with another company could happen... or perhaps nobody bites and Konami just sits on its IP.

In any event, Konami isn't going anywhere.

True! But it still sells millions every year! Not the tons EA's FIFA does but it sells rather well and it's every year!

It might take 2, 3 or 4 PES to do the numbers that one big MGS release pulls but they are annualized, MGS isn't. MGSV will sell more than PES 2016 for sure but there will be a PES 2017 next year. I highly doubt there's going to be a big MGS release next year.

I highly doubt that Konami is doing this just because Kojima is the head name behind the franchise. Something serious happened behind closed doors with the direction of Kojima Productions and the company as a whole, and what they are going to be doing after MGSV is done.

Power struggles can be ugly, and clearly Kojima is going to be leaving, and the fact they are already revising past work makes it clear this is not a clean breakup, and something major is happening with the people up top.
