GDC Expo: hands on impressions/media of Project Morpheus (Sony VR)

lol seems like you can't have a negative opinion on this VR headset without people yelling and screaming at you XD

you can have a valid opinion after you try it yourself, people were just upset that you were relaying false info, or cherry picking impressions without looking at the whole picture.

I wasn't expecting anything to be run on PCs like what might be done at E3. Is anything (aside from probably Thief) confirmed running on something else?

You already had negatives thoughts before the reveal and then you only talked about negative impressions as though it reinforces your opinion while other positive impression says total opposite. You decide :/

All I did was reply to someone who said it was superior to Rift in every category with the impressions I simply responded with what I read and I am told I am wrong, righto.

I wish the PS4 the best of luck with AAA games and running them at 120 FPS, I'm sure Battlefront will be running at 120 FPS on PS4 at 1080p :)

I do wish ps4 would run games at 120 fps too. I do also wish that I had a pc which was consistently locked above or at 120 fps. I also wish i had $1900 for a rig which can do all games at 120fps too. But I might just settle at $400 for now with a nearly as good immersive experience

Incredibly Naive
Yeah, of actually all the quirks I've read so far, it's Move calibration that has me slightly concerned given prior experience on PS3. The wider fov of the PS Camera should help a lot compared to PS3, though. Maybe it's just unfinished libs/less-than-robust implementations in the demos. Hope it can be polished up.

Like I said I've only seen a few videos of people playing, but some of them, the dragon one in particular is worrying. I don't really care to use the move wands with it anyways, I'm just hoping the head tracking part doesn't lose calibration.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned....

Would this thing be able to double up as a regular display for games?

As in, All normal titles playable with no VR elements? Dependant on input lag, it may be worth picking one up for that alone for me.

I feel like this should be a requirement of the device. If you can't use it as a HMD for normal games and other content it would reduce the functionality of it drastically.

The more companies jump on VR the better and hopefully Microsoft does something similar in the future too. We need all the exposure we can get.

I've been dreaming about this shit since the 80's so elitists can get the fuck out with their brand loyalty bullshit.

Now go make something for it, NaughtyDog!

It seems you need to have some kind of knowledge on VR before posting.

The bolded is factually incorrect. Spend 10 minutes researching what VR is about and come back to the thread. People in general don't like it when others make up their own facts.

Especially Bish... That man scares me.

Amen. I can't wait.

I wonder if it's technically possible to have an extra add on processor for PS4 to help with performance issues. VR being very demanding is what bugs me and will most likely drive away any real game support for the device and end up as a niche device with specific games similar to Kinect, Move, and PSEye.

Man there is always that junior in threads like these who just won't give up and have to drill people with their opinion ...

Yes dude we get it...Morpheus is crap...OCR WINS!!!

I might be wrong, but to me VR is in the same league as Motion gaming (Wii, Kinect, Move) and 3D. It will not last long...
I know that being a Rift Kickstarter backer probably makes my opinion suspect, but I disagree thoroughly. In fact, I think that VR might be the tech that finally makes motion gaming worthwhile.

Happy to see the positive feedback so far. And it's not even final so it will most likely improve.

We can't have 'ram pack' like things anymore, no interfaces are low enough latency to introduce something like that.

But not to fear! Sony are going about this the right way. They made it very clear they consider this a different 'medium', and they're right. It will have totally different content expectations, which will lead to alternate visual expectations.

PS4 will deliver really fantastic VR.

You have no idea how either of these VR headsets work. It's obvious from the false BS you're spewing.

I relation to persistence, it's not entirely related to framerate, right? It can be improved without going above 60?

PS4 hardware is just fine for VR, this needs to stop. Devs will adapt and cut back where its needed, nothing new. You can actually see the standardized hardware as an advantage since it will rely less on the player configuring the settings.

It will take some time for the average PC to surpass the capabilities of the PS4 and even than I don't know how its install base would compare. PC has the advantage of a more free environment where a demo scene can flourish, but that actually helps the PS4, like the PC indie scene currently helps Sony consoles.

Yeah, it's not. Essentially, the less persistence, you higher the framerate needs to be, but even at 60Hz, you can have much lower persistence than a normal LCD panel without strobing. When you start targeting 2 or 3ms persistence, you start needing more than 60Hz, when you get to 1ms, you need more still, Valve are claiming 95 will cover it, but you might be able to go lower.

Sony claimed it's low persistence, but a switch to OLED might still be able to notably improve persistence without requiring a refresh bump.

Yeah, I have high hopes for that. Based on Shu's tweet, I'm hoping that 16:9, non-distorted output is actually from the headset's processor itself.

Dev Kit 2 for Oculus Rift, it's league aheads of PS4 VR, all the impressions so far of Dev Kit 2 obliterate what I've read about PS4 VR.

from The Verge:
...but Morpheus is still a little blurrier than the newest version of the Rift. Conversely, its superior lenses have actually done better at removing the blocky "screen door" effect, even if the display obviously can't measure up to a 2D counterpart. It's great at blocking out light without feeling stifling, something the Rift still struggles with
If you had taken some time to read this very thread, you'd have found out it doesn't obliterate everything. It's not easy to find time to read everything, but I think people are objecting because you are using strong phrases and words like "leagues aheads" and "obliterate" while missing things like the above that others who are more careful readers find obvious.

From the Verge piece, the TV feed is just the left-eye feed from the headset. Which so much sense I can't believe I didn't figure it out before I read that.
