GDC: Halo 4 Post Mortem starts right now.

Apparently not enough! I mean having a good skill gap that lets players improve by playing? pfft who the fuck needs that?

I started Halo 2 completely new to XBL a year after Halo 2 came out but thanks to the 1-50 system matching me within 5 levels of my rank it gave me people that were also new to the experience and I learned by playing within my skill rank. Now due to the XP system that is all gone.

This but it was also rewarding.
And competitive with friends.

Didact and his motives weren't explored enough in the game and the story was paced way too fast especially after playing Bioshock. I felt way too rushed throughout the entire game and it didn't allow me to absorb what I'd just learned and a lot was given to me without context.

the Prometheans are dull and boring to fight they made the flood seem interesting

The Promethean weapons are uninspired but after listening to Josh talk in the GDC postmortem they tried other mechanics but the players were too dimwitted to use them so they abandoned trying something new and just made variations on the already existing archetypes.

I think 343i needs to ween off of the Covenant stuff entirely in order to allow for better creativity. I think Halo as a whole needs to move on from the Covenant, that chapter is closed and those design tropes are holding the creativity back.

good post.

Good questions at the Panel, 343 can't really think they did well for the competive community?

:/

But... they already had the ten million+ sales. Why did they feel the need to try to make the game more accessible to broaden the game's appeal to get more?

Don't fix what ain't broken etc.

Chasing them CoD Sales.

Clarification: The whole multiplayer portion feels wrong. A mere 2 days after the game came out, I posted this;

Multiplayer feels really fucked up too. It feels like SWAT matches, that's how fast the kills come. Everyone is sprinting everywhere, power weapons everywhere, vehicles everywhere (Mantis and Banshee on the same map? Great idea!), balance nowhere. I don't see it having much longevity with me, not like H3 (or even Reach) and certainly nowhere near as much as H2.

I don't know if I want to make maps for this kind of gameplay, I think it's just been sped up and cut down, all of the tactics and skill of Halo has been replaced with "Whoever sees the other guy first wins". You used to get hit once, maybe twice, and be able to turn and put up a fight (unless it was a CE Pistol or Snipe, obviously). I liked that Halo was a little meatier, maybe even a tad slower and chunkier... and for all their talk of 'making you feel like you're in a heavy suit of Spartan armor', you feel awfully flimsy and easy to bump off.

I hate to say it, but it feels like Call of Duty had waaaaaaaaaaaay too much influence on the gameplay here. Too fast, too many pointless weapons (we really need 4 rifles?)... it's just all over the place.

I know it just came out, but first blush, I think I'm done with 343's vision of Halo. I went from liking the campaign (but feeling lost on a lot of the story) to "Wow, campaign was all there was in this game for me."

Terrible that nobody wanted new (more crazy) weapons, having Promethean weapons just be cool looking but traditional in function was disappointing.

I am certain that people here were going nuts over this game and loving the shit out of it when it was released. Did I miss the memo that it was time to hate it?

That just told me everything I needed to know. They're happy with things the way they are and they don't have a clue when it comes to Halo.

Fans wanted a progression system? Where did they find these so called fans?

Fans wanted a gameplay impacting progression system?

Wait fans wanted the progression system? What fucking fans were they talking to?

WOAH WOAH WOAH!

We wanted a game impacting progression system?

Who on earth did they speak to?

Having to wait sixty levels in order to not flinch wildly on every shot: "Interesting," say fans.

NO GAMEPLAY IMPACTING PROGRESSION?!?!?!!?!?!

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME, YOU START THE GAME WITH ONLY THE ASSAULT RIFLE FOR FUCK'S SAKE!

343 received feedback from fans that they were looking for gameplay impacting progression, not armor.
WAT?

Yeah, 343, which fans did you hear that they wanted gameplay impacting progression from? Because it sure isn't these people/us, I doubt anyone wanted this.

Of course we were going to try and slant things positively in the first days/weeks. Its called the denial stage. Denial that they were gonna fix anything in a patch.

Also, no. Things like the new CTF were seen in press videos and people were immediately critical.

Damn, the hate is strong already here.

Screw the haters, Halo 4 was excellent :D

Agree. I think it's the best singleplayer in the franchise, personally.

A lot of angry folks, but I'm not into MP, so none of the MP stuff registers to me. I only get Halo titles for the campaign and story.

I actually like Halo 4, but that's mostly because I generally play SWAT over the other modes. It's a buzzkill that it looks like the franchise is going to be made more casual-driven, because from the sounds of it, they're saying the reasons I love Halo are the problem. I'm already on the fence between jumping on board NextBox in favor of picking up a PS4 first, but dumbing down Halo even more than it already has been will make my choice a lot easier.

You clearly weren't looking into the HaloGAF thread then ;)

Lol exactly, yeeeeah nobody wanted a skill ranking system noooo, everybody wanted this piece of shit stuff.

Good job 343, outsource Halo 5 please.

Yep. As per my post above, it only took me 2 days to figure out I was done with 343's vision of Halo. Pretty sad, considering I've been a fan of the series forever and was even pretty forgiving of their missteps in the past (Halo 2's abrupt ending... all of Reach...)

I guess on the bright side there's no reason to buy a NextBox for Halo5, that's money I can put towards something that isn't coasting on brand recognition and nostalgia fumes.

I really regret buying Halo 4 at this point. I played less then a 100 matches and I have zero plans of ever playing it seriously.

See CoD sales numbers and xbox live activity

Oh, those fans... Call of Duty fans.

I am certain that people here were going nuts over this game and loving the shit out of it when it was released. Did I miss the memo that it was time to hate it?

I know I was bashing the campaign from Day 1, and my goodwill ran out very quickly in regards to the MP.

I remember many others not being satisfied with SP, and the progression system from the start also, the story got a lot of hate.

Actually from the beginning many hated the game. In fact I'd say it divided the community pretty badly. Half hated it with a passion and half loved it. Many long term fans moved on quickly. Some of us have lingered holding out hope.

They're about equal sales wise, no? On 360 I mean.

yeah I should've excluded the sales.

But looking at Halo's MP they've been handily beaten by CoD ever since CoD 4 was released and prior to Halo 4's release CoD 4 was beating Reach and all other Halo's for XBL activity.

Good thing for 343 they didn't do a spring or summer beta for Halo 4.
I would have probably cancelled my preorder.

Halo 4 it is a good game but it isn't halo 1,2 or 3.
Aargh dont even know what to feel anger or sadness that such a big part of my gaming life died.

Im pretty sure cod craze really started with mw2.

Regarding the story, I'm pretty invested in the lore, I've read all the books, comics, movies etc etc, and yet, I felt so goddamn lost. "So is this Ur-didact or what, who, when, where, why?" was all I was thinking.

Then when you read the wikis for hours and hours to fully grasp the story, you understand it's three times as convoluted as it needs to be to convey the story of humanity, the covenant and the forerunners.

Other than that, I thought it was a great game. Not as focused as previous games though.

My biggest gripe with it though, was that it just wasn't very fulfilling coming back as MC, because no one acknowledged that you were gone for so long, or that you were "missed".

Like, I thought there would be this awesome moment meeting up with Lord Hood and the others, but nope, just "Chief, took you long enough".
