I dislike this Ranked matchmaking malarky. I'm completely average at GoW2 and have 3 gold chevrons. I don't care about rank or trueskill wankery. Just put me in a game with 9 other people, I don't care what their arbitrarily useless ranking is.
Better yet, give me some more choice and provide Ranked/Unranked server browsers. At least some sort of unranked playlist if Matchmaking is such an important and necessary 'feature.' I want to be able to take a Guest online other than in a private game.
This game's problems and awesomeness leaves me very confused. Last night, Aladuf and I joined up to look for a public elimination game. He presses "find match" and all of a sudden I'm transported into another game controlling another person's character! My gamertag isn't even in the lobby but I'm the one playing! It was like the Matrix... I was an agent and I assumed another person's body! And of course I can't leave the game so I have to go back to the dash and restart the game. After that, my 360's NAT settings change spontaneously to moderate from open! I haven't fiddled around with any of those settings, ever. Then I couldn't play at all because my firewall was too strict. Thankfully I tried a couple hours later and I guess everything reset itself.
So, after that nightmare, I join up with the GAF crew and have 3 solid hours of the best gaming this gen.
Highlights:
- Hulot killing me 1,000 times with grenade booby traps.
- Me killing Hulot with a torque headshot when he had a meat shield.
- Me killing Third Engine with a 50 yard mortar shot as he was rushing me at Jacinto.
- After jumping to evade an enemy in the centre area in Hail, Aladaf, from halfway across the map, snipes me while I'm in mid air, through the opening of my anus, up my spinal cord, and into my brain for a headshot.
- Someone going mental on Penguin for his chainsaw use. After several minutes of silence from Penguin he says, "it was an accident." lol.
- Bot player Minh running around blind firing the mortar.
I really hope they get these issues sorted out. I just can't believe how a game with this many resources thrown behind it can have such a piss poor matchmaking process. I can't tell you how many times I've waited 10+ minutes to find a match...
Just beat this game, was a short but enjoyable ride, but I'm a bit mixed on certain things
In terms of the gameplay, I really liked the variety of gameplay here compared to Gears1 (which was repetitive near the end). Scripted sequences like when
Marcus is Riding the Bormuk, Riding the Reaver, Marcus and Dom are inside the castle and reduce the water flow and you have to run across the water flow area before the Locust turns it back on resulting in your drowning, running underneath the teeth of the worm, walking past the lasers as Dom manages the switches, or when you have to cut the arteries of the worm's heart in-time, or when you have to shoot down the driver of the vehicle and knock them off so you can get on the bridge, etc. Of course there were some stinkers, like the stupid and incredibly annoying tank segment, the entire boat shooting segment, and the end which was too abrupt - it seems to be a mistake they frequently make - as even Gears1 ended a bit too soon
. Overall good job.
With regards to the story, I always felt Gears had an interesting backdrop with potential for story, and wished Epic would do more to explore it in Gears1. I feel like they are getting there now, although I wish they had spent a little more time on the depth of the story and had characters speculating more often, the voice-acting more emotional, clarity on the backstory behind the Locusts, a little more insight on Imulsion, the Queen talking more instead of just cutting everyone off, etc. Seems like Epic has been spending a lot of time in strip clubs, because the game was filled with teasers about what's to come (that's a joke BTW).
I credit Epic for sticking to the gameplay and not getting too caught up in Kojima-esque movie-making, however they have such a rich universe, that it was silly not to explore it further and deeper than they did in the second game. Unfortunately, you can't fully do that with one-liners and your occassional cut-scene (although I suppose some people would argue that's the brilliance of it), and the characters need to do more than just "FOLLOW ORDERS" - seems like no one asks obvious questions, and when they do, it's just left for you to ponder without any further insight (which I guess some would argue is the purpose).
Anyways, the point is that, I'm actually far more interested in Gears3 to see how the story shapes up than to go through the same stop and pop gameplay a third time (although it's also great, provided they keep diversifying it and stick to the most interesting aspects of it - i.e. scripted battle sequences where you have to achieve an objective like getting to the end of the room in-time or provide cover, etc). So as a result, I hope Epic puts a great deal of time on the story component in Gears3 to wrap up the trilogy. Now I'm not saying to make it like Metal Gear Solid 4, but yes, there needs to be a looooong ending, and in-between there should be some decent-sized cinematics/cutscenes (not as frequent as MGS4, but let's say between Acts, and certainly longer than what we had in Gears 2 - for example, the
Maria sequence could have been far more emotional if there was greater dialogue by Dom while they were beating the Locusts before he found her, such as about the things that made him smile about her, or some of the things she said that he continued to remember. Minus a photograph, a one-liner, and a flashbac sequence, this character development was mostly absent, meaning the emotional impact was less potent than it could have been
)
As a compromise, I like the idea of the collectibles, so perhaps the next game should have tons of collectibles to understand more about the story (ala Metroid Prime), and perhaps recovering video artifacts, perhaps audio diaries (ala BioShock). This could provide a bridge to understanding more about the story for those who care, without turning it into Gears of War Solid. Epic could also partner to release a book or two based on the universe ala Mass Effect & Halo.
Now some of you may be saying, "Why mess with something that ain't broke?" - The problem is that without doing these things in the third game, the series remains a great episodic game, but it's hard to justify spending 65 dollars for a little more insight into the story with another 8 hours of stop and pop gameplay every 1-2 years. Epic would be better off just releasing episodic add-ons costing 10-15 dollars a piece for another 4 hours of gameplay every two months (which would be a better value for the user as well and have almost zero distribution costs). They can throw in new multi-player maps, and your occassional new game mode to keep the multiplayer gamers happy.
Finally wanted to say that I think the textures are getting much better, but the geometric complexity, not as much. You can clearly see where Gears2 was compensating for a lack of polygonal horsepower, as a number of the models and enemies had limited geometric complexity but with a highly detailed texture with effects slapped on to make it look good. I applaud the advances they have made - the game looks really phenomenal, but I am even more eager to see where Epic takes the next-generation of hardware where they can get 10-50x the number of polygons to play around with.
So my FINAL JUDGEMENT!!!11111 (not that anyone gives a rat's ass) is that Gears2 is a great game, one of the best of the year, but has a lot of untapped potential which makes me excited for Gears3 provided Epic is thinking about it the same way I am.
Now that Ive beaten the game, I think its just a hair behind Mass Effect for my favorite game of the generation. Absolutely fucking amazing, EPIC game.

One of my favorite campaign moments was the sniper sequence while in the caves. Marcus notices the locust far away and says "good sniper practice" or something, so I sniper some. I try to snipe as much locust as possible, pressure gets high and do some perfect active reloads and you feel Marcus get angrier with each kill.
"That's one", "That's two!!", "That's three!!!", "THAT'S FOUR!!", and with each kill I was curious what he'd say next and then the last locust is almost in the cave and I really wanted to snipe him and I just got him by an inch and he says "That's FIVE MOTHERFUCKERS!!". It was such an awesome moment and it felt very natural and in sync with my actions.

I could do some Horde now, but I'll have to disappear in like a hour for like 15 mins. After that I can play pratically all night as long as you don't mind playing with a Englishman.

I preordered my collector's edition from Best Buy and got the plastic tank and the code for the free map pack - but where's my code for the golden lancer?
Please don't tell me that was a separate card they were supposed to give me at checkout. I've checked the manual, the artbook, everywhere, and I can't find it!

played with some GAFers tonight. We started out with Horde and OMG did that take forever but we beat wave 50. Then we got a 5v5 going on different matches and it was super fun.
Yeah, that was tons of fun last night. Mostly full room, lots of variety, and people were having a good time. We should get another big GAF room going sometime soon.
Man, I'm barely posting in here now since I'm either busy in general, or just playing the hell out of this game online...
Matchmaking is damn-near instant when I'm partied up in a full lobby with friends - you guys should try inviting the guys back from your previous match to speed up the process, especially when you win...
The problem seems to be when you search alone, or with 2 or 3 guys... and that problem increased when Live had issues as well since everyone was disconnecting, so of course there's less people to be matched against...
And damn - Submission is the best new mode ever made - you can have an epic back-and-forth struggle between two good teams, and I love that there's no timer on the rounds either too - I remember we had one on the very first round, on River (one of my favorite maps BTW) - I think it took at least 15 minutes if not longer - when we got the cap that round, it felt so good...

So unexpected and awesome when I did that for the first time - I was smiling with each kill and each time he yelled out the count, and by the end I was cracking up - good stuff! :lol
big ups to monkey for the 8 person in one shot kill, and also the fuck awesome glitch where the guy was about to get smashed in the house on River, but the smash glitch knocked him out the window to fight another day :lol
Really enjoyed the game, so much fun. Still think they could have given us a little more with the story as the moment with dom was quite good.
Off topic but there a lot of 360 gamers in this thread: If I hide my games played in my gamercard does it hide my gamerscore, if not is there no way of hiding gamerscore at all?

Perhaps someone who has finished the game can remind me
Where did Dr Niles Crazyman go after he left the abandoned facility? Just found a collectable in Free Parking which is a newspaper excerpt reporting of a 'second safe haven' the CoG have kept secret. Wondered if the two might go hand-in-hand for G3ars.

But where did he go from there!
Playing through a few acts again, there are so many questions raised that they need to addressed in Gears 3. Why can't they have it ready for...I don't know...March 09? Actually make it May, RE5 is out end of March
Q: There are multiple unique finishing kill moves? How come every time I press Y near a downed grub, I always get the same punch-punch-punch move? What am I doing wrong?
