geoff keighley always up on stage like "This is the biggest game l've ever had the privilege to reveal. This is going to blow your mind and I'm terrified life will never be the same after it." and then it's another generic hero shooter

Yeah he's a bit of a cunt, but I kind of get why he does it. He should just shut his mouth on the build up and let the reveals speak for themselves. All he does by building up hype is create disappointment.

That's entirely up to you, you have eyes if the game looks exciting then be excited if not then don't.

It like complaining about why TV commercials oversell their product…..that's the point, its how marketing works.

How is this tool being the centre stage of all this. How did he even get the capital to run this show. wtf does this dude even do?
If you're genuinely curious it is all in this tell-all interview he did a few years ago:

TGAs started out as the Spike TV Video Game Awards. When the Spike TV deal fell through years ago, Keighley had to put a ton of his own money up to keep the video game awards going on it's own without a TV deal. It was a big gamble.

He had to call in a ton of favors, including contacts he made over the years from Nintendo, Sony, and MS, to get them to play ball and attend that new TGAs.

Multiple people in the past have publicly stated that he was always known to be a great people person in the industry and would constantly build bridges, and it worked out well enough to where that skill paid off for him and the show could go on, and then more sponsors came along once the streaming numbers increased year by year, to where we are today.

It's his job or do you expect him to say: "So guys, time for a bathroom break, because I now unfortunately have to announce a generic hero shooter"?

should know by now that his shows are never bombshells and are little farts.

he tries his best and i respect him for that but these shows are never gonna set the world alight like some E3 showcases did almost 10 years ago.

Geoff is underrated. Every year he puts on a class act. I think there is a level of self-awareness so he's not totally up his own ass - he knows what he's doing (and in fact has to do) in regards to using it as advertising space to keep the ball rolling. Listen to the lyrics of the Muppets song which low-key acknowledges the criticism people have about the show:

To be fair, what do you want him to say? "This next pile of sparkling shit looks like a fucking joke compared to studios that have zillions to spend on hiring an army of artists, enjoy!"?

He can't do that because one, the entire point is to celebrate creators both big and small. Two, different people have different tastes. There's stuff that sounds like "Yet another one of those huh" that people thought looked cool. So he (as a host) can't be biased against a game just because it isn't another AAAAAAAA game.

And let's be honest; Geoff Keighley isn't a fake clickbait exaggerator like Asmongold and co. Yes, he hypes games and events. But if that's the extent of his 'evil' then I'll take that anyday of the week over the thumbnail drama queens who make this fantastic industry sound like an hourly warzone of humanitarian ideologies. He's literally one of the few famous people in games coverage who hasn't gone down the "Let me make people angry at something and or each other to make money" path.

Additionally, Geoff -- for all of his Doritos and Dew earnings -- is genuinely not a grifter. He knows his stuff. Without Geoff, we'd be left with lackluster events that are either 100% platform-advertisements (e.g., SoP, Nintendo Direct) or poorly produced quackiness that takes forrrrrreeeeeeeever to get to the good stuff (e.g., PC Gaming Show). The valid criticism I've seen about the Keighley's was the amount of stage time the award winners were given; it was far too short. He listened to the feedback and fixed that. And now, if you win an award, you don't have to execute BenShapiroTempo.exe to get a couple of sentences in before the cello starts playing.

Finally, Geoff Keighley, for all his 'hype' faults, is the same guy who did The Final Hours of Half-Life, wasn't a coward towards Don Mattrick during an era where 99% of 'journalists' were gobbling Xbox's nuts, did Game Head/Game Trailers for years without turning it into an unwatchable adfest, etc. Let's give credit where credit is due; the guy has significantly more positives than negatives in the gaming industry, and as hypey and adsy as his shows can be, losing him would suck way more than people realize. Way waaaaaay more than you might think.

I regret watching that junk. There was like 3 trailers worth watching in a 3 hour show. His ONE MORE THING announcement was insulting.

You're really gonna wanna see this one! Then it's the most generic multiplayer game that I already forgot about.

It's true though . There wasn't anything super exciting shown. The only big ones for me were the new mega man which was just an announcement and maybe the star wars racer. Everything else was meh to crap.

Never been a huge fan of him since he was on GameStop TV in yesteryear, but he's done a lot of good in the industry and helped more than hindered.

TGAs is really the only exciting show we get outside of Summer Games Fest, which pales on comparison(though they are both his events).

He makes mistakes, but he's fixed a great deal of them. This year, he didn't trot out some celebrity who clearly doesn't need nor want to be there(Ford, Pacino) and he rightly addressed criticism on industry problems and giving people more time to speak.

You *have* to keep people engaged, so building hype is just part of the show.

His only real mistake this year was the final reveal, which was just a terrible note to end on. I haven't seen a single person hyped about it.

I'm not sure *how* or *why* they got that slot or what the appeal might be, but the Overwatch-esque ship sailed many moons ago.

He's getting paid for doing what he loves, it's not the same thing as doing the right thing. I still want to see him taking E3 place cause it's basically dead.

For a shower that bills itself as being blockbuster and the biggest gaming event of the year there sure is a lot of absolute junk, like gacha shit, hero shooters and other stinkers.

Geoff had spent years, sweat and took risks to get Game Awards to the state it is at.

It's also his job to help market shit and he still has fairly lengthy segments for devs to talk about games.

There are always going to be meh games revealed at the show, because a lot of games are meh, and that's ok. I thought this year was pretty good with a lot of interesting games shown off despite the flat dud at the end.

Anyways, props to Geoff, and I don't get the hate. At least this is a bit exciting with the demise of E3.

As long as many watch his shows things will remain as they are.

Personally, despite some dreadful conferences over the years, I miss the old E3 format. He has the Summer Game Fest, gamescom and the game awards. I would like to see someone else take the reigns on one of those at some point.

Don't forget to also blame the leakers who promise HL3, BB2 and FD6 every event only for them to never show. A lot of people over hype stuff, at least he is connect and making money from his deceit.

I get the jokes about Dorito Pope and all that, but in the end he puts on a pretty good show and yeah, this is the closest thing we have to E3 anymore so I'm not going to complain.

It's the best gaming event of the year - nothing else compares. Sure, lots of slop on display, but also a fair few decent surprises. You only have yourself to blame for getting overhyped. Set your expectations lower and you'll have a good time.

Create disappoinment in people watching his show - and watching the ads he got paid $1000000 per 3 minutes to show them.

I go into these shows expecting nothing, so I'm pleasantly surprised when something good is actually shown. He overhypes things for sure, but he kind of has to. I just take it as a fun event that highlights devs of all sizes, so its pretty harmless.
