Look at this logic. "You won't be cast to lead a blockbuster until you can lead a blockbuster."

How does this even make sense?

The logic is you have to keep doing small B action movie to build up the reputation and popularity in order to one day take on a big action movie solo. Keira Knightley was doing it at one time with a lot of those little Tony Scott capers, but she stoped doing it.

By the way, you guys are wrong about lack of asian actress who can top bill in a 100 million GitS movie. Jing Tian has been in a lot of blockbusters recently and casting her can secure the funding. HOWEVER, GitS has never been popular in China so its not going to work.

They're not even getting those "Small B action movie" roles though. Why? Because Hollywood doesn't want to cast them. We've been over this, and that logic doesn't even necessarily hold up anymore. An in-depth study was supplied on the last page debunking that myth. You can't keep telling minorities that it's their fault they can't get a job because they lack the experience, and then repeatedly close the door to that experience in their faces. This is a systemic issue.

It's most definitely a systemic issue, however Hollywood is working exactly as it's been designed which is primarily telling stories with a White lead. It doesn't view this as a problem it needs to fix.

Change isn't going to happen at the top, but from the ground up and tbh it doesn't look that promising.

Was Lucy Liu even that good of an actress? I remember Bill Murray supposedly called her out on her acting. I felt that other asian chick in Kill Bill (the one from Battle Royale) did a better job than her. I don't remember much of Lucy Liu's acting tbh.

As for ScarJo being cast, I feel it's strictly business. They want to appeal to a wider audience, and Scarlett fits the bill. GitS doesn't seem like a popular IP as opposed to say Xmen, so the studio aren't willing to risk casting an unpopular actress.

As someone that has watched multiple seasons of Elementary: no.

Agreed and I do think there is some foundation being built with directors like James Wan and Justin Lin. Both of them got established in the past few years and unlike Ang Lee for example who floats more on the artsy side. I think they'll be more likely to push for it, hopefully. If we get more Asians behind the camera, growing population in the country, and expanding market. It should force a change in front. Rather than getting another token Chinese actor to stick in, but actually building up Asian American actors.

Or it could just keep saving Vin Diesel lead franchises.

How's the tank battle scene? I'm guessing this being a pg-13 movie they couldn't go all out on it.

They do a pretty solid job with the lifting the tank thing. Doesn't cut away or anything and shows all of her muscles slowing ripping apart on her back and arms in full detail. Arm rips off too like the original.

That's great! Thanks for the info.

So, up until now there are no real negative reviews as it seems. Good movie, but not as great as the 95 anime. Has problems with the PG13 rating and also that Paramount wanted it more middle of the road, less artsy. Maybe there will be a Directors cut on blu-ray later.

Still 67% on rotten tomatoes and it will probably not fall below 50% anymore, tough it is still quite early. Most of the audience also seem to like it. Box office numbers will be interesting.

So just a solid movie, no Batman V Superman level of bad, more something closer to Kong or Beauty and the Beast, good but not great. But we will have to wait until more reviews are in.

The "logic" never held up at any point. Because the same "logic" is used to explain why minorities don't get cast in B-tier movies. When you get to that tier they shift to "they should make their own movies".

Oh wow, kinda surprised they recreated that.

That's textbook liberal racism lmfao
Liberal racism is really dangerous. Just as much if not more dangerous than more idenfiable types of racism. Feigned concern and all the mental gymnastics a racist liberal has to perform to validate their racist rhetoric leads to a mess.

I just saw it, I have zero knowledge of the anime, I just know it exists. The movie didn't connect with me. I felt the world building was not good, you just get thrown in there. It all looks cool but I didn't feel much for any of the characters. Action was ok, nothing great. It does the fancy gun fu kind of stuff we see in a lot of movies now so the action looks flashy but it's not gripping like john wick. There was a spider tank so that was sweet.

Beautiful looking movie at times, didn't care much for the characters or the story.

You should rectify that.

Just came back from seeing it. Having not seen the anime I have no complaints in that regard. I thought it was a really entertaining and visually stunning film which was shot well. Ic an't remember the name, but the actor who played the cyber enhanced villain (I guess Majors' counterpart) did an excellent job, and Scarlett was great also. The actor who played the lead of section 9 was also great and his lieutenant was an interesting character, I wish he and Major could have had more screen time together.

I think it could have benefitted from being longer and building a bit more on character, slowing things down just a bit, maybe have some more lingering shots to really show the beauty of the world.

Wait, are you using Legendary's insistence that Jing Tian appears in all their films as evidence that Hollywood isn't all that whitewashed and Asians just gotta earn their way up to stardom? Please, nobody really knows who she is here, she's just random Chinese actress that appears in Kong for no reason. As if she's not just being thrust into the pics to appease Chinese audiences the same way Beat Takeshi's casting in this film is to appease and attract Japanese audiences.

Great to hear. Looking forward to seeing it. And you should definitely get on watching the anime content now. :)

Okay. Yeah, I wonder why it's not at least a full 2 hours since fandango lists it as 1 hour and 42 min.

Just came out of the IMAX showing the movie. About as average as you can get! They absolutely nailed the look of the world, but the plot was pretty dull. Scarlet Johanson gave a pretty poor performance in my view.

A fairly entertaining movie, but a bit of a let down for me.

I'm not sure if this has already been brought up a lot, but I thought the 3D in this was really well done. One of the best 3D implementations I think I've seen.

Beat Takeshi is one of my favourite things in the movie
I'm a fan of Beat Takeshi, but it made no sense that everyone was speaking English and then the head of Section 9 is speaking Japanese.

The 3D didn't distract as sometimes bad conversions can and I think certainly added to the panning shots of the city.

It's cool you can totally have your opinions, but how are visuals and setting? Is the action good and fun to watch? These are the main things I'm looking forward to. I definitely never expected it to come close to the original film or series in terms of story or characters.
I liked the setting for the most part (They went overboard with the hologram stuff though)

As for the action, i felt it was meh. Sorry.
So is the shelling sequence they showed months ago in the movie or not? Just with different music?
Different music. And truncated
Will wait for the Chin Han Cut on BD.

Just got home from the theater.

It's better than I had hoped, but it's still the weakest GITS story. Best part of the movie is Beat Takeshi.

Variety estimates Ghost in the Shell will open to an estimated $25 million, reported production budget is $110 million: https://variety.com/2017/film/box-office/box-office-ghost-in-the-shell-boss-baby-1202018796/

“The Ghost in the Shell,” an adaptation of a popular Japanese Manga, has been dogged by controversy over the filmmakers’ decision to cast Scarlett Johansson as Major instead of an Asian actress. Johansson has previously scored in action movies like “Lucy,” but it’s unclear whether or not the “whitewashing” charges will hurt the box office.

As it stands, “The Ghost in the Shell” should open to $25 million from approximately 3,400 locations, a weak result given its $110 million production budget. “The Ghost in the Shell” follows a cyber-enhanced soldier tasked with foiling a set of terrorist hackers. Paramount produced the picture in conjunction with DreamWorks Pictures and Reliance Entertainment.

Can anyone spoiler me that twist? I have a gut feeling what it is from the leaked photos but I want to be sure.
Basically, Mira's (Mokoto's) original body was Japanese. They've basically made the whitewashing controversy into a meta-narrative within the story.

Although that view on it might be a bit light for most.

I mean it's pretty hard to be worse than Arise in the story department.

I probably would have enjoyed it if they hadn't so
dramatically changed everyone's origin story.

For a product that's almost 40 minutes longer than the original, it still runs through people's backstories at full speed, never stopping long enough for much to make much sense.

At least Arise resembles GITS, even if the new designs are stupid.

Which is neat because it doesn't put a boot on the neck of that conversation. If anything, people will almost be forced to continue having it in casual discussion of the movie.

Ouch, seems like estimates for it are constantly going down.

Btw this movie will make sure you know exactly what Ghost means. Like it makes Nolan look subtle in terms of exposition.
Not before telling you exactly what Shells are!

I barely even noticed it, which is weird because movies often tie themselves in knots trying to make English seem normal in movies where it's not (Hunt For Red October, etc.). Here the blend of languages hardly registered, maybe because of the futuristic setting.

I just took it as a sign that his character was old school. The younger gen might learn English, but he's going to speak Japanese and everyone else will just have to deal with it :)

I doubt it will be casual tbh. A lot of people are going to use that to say how tonedeaf the creative team was, etc.
