Ghost of Tsushima |OT| - Summer blade cuts through, the PlayStation shall go on, this is its swan song

4 hours in...I think im not liking it too much.

Swipe up on touchpad to “follow the wind”in order to get to your destination, followed by a cheap sounding wind noise from the controller is gimmicky and really stupid.

As a huge AC fan, climbing feels like a step back from Assassins Creed 1, and I hated the first AC. Being limited to such a small amount of climbable spots doesn’t feel like it belongs in 2020.

Speaking of climbing, those rock textures look like they came straight from the PS4 launch days. The graphics are so bipolar. One moment you get this nice scene with wind blowing glistening grass and trees, and the next moment im standing on a cliff and the terrible LOD and muddy textures slap me in the face.

The intro felt like Ryse Son of Rome, thankfully without QTEs at least.

I hope I’m wrong in this one, and the word generic usually makes me cringe, but the story so far looks like it will be very generic. Hopefully it doesn’t end with the typical “beating the guy that beats you at the beginning in order to save a loved one”.
You act like this is supposed to be climbing simulator and since it doesnt meet your standards the game is meh.
Climbing is a forgettably minor part of the game.

So far it has been blast for me (still in Act 2) The camera could be better and the stealth needs skill upgrades to utilize it.

The feeling being samurai is just what I expected.

Great, thanks! In all videos/streams i always see the current objective and other info constantly on screen, so I was assuming it couldn't be deactivated. Good to know.

That's actually a pretty awesome way of navigating, sounds much more preferable to the "wind button".

LOL, can I ask why? :messenger_tears_of_joy:
There should be the Italian dub, if you're feeling bold.
It would be hilarious!
Super serious samurai speech cutscenes voiced by Mario!

i mean, the wind button show the direction to take in a more clear way, but i readed that even if you don't touch it, the wind still kinda help you.

i still have to test with my hands.

Please let me know if you manage to test this, it would be a subtle but pretty awesome feature.

If you mark a location/area on your map the wind does blow in the direction that you need to go without having to push a button to activate the wind.

You only need to push that button if for whatever reason you lose your way or can't tell what way the wind is blowing.

For the most part (at least early on in the game anyway) I've barely had to 'activate' the wind since it automatically blows in the direction you need to go in anyway.

When I manage to push the right buttons, and not just jam and spam everything, the combat can feel pretty fucking bad ass tbh. Just learnt a special attack plus unlocked the 1st extra stance and starting to have some real fun with it. When I don't suck that is

Anyone get the preorder samurai theme to work? I have it installed but cannot actually use it

Works for me. Just installed it then

I been playing since about 7pm last night(Got a physical copy and cancelled my digital preorder lol)

And this is just like Sekiro for me...I been waiting for Ninja/Samurai games for so long and I'm finally getting my hopes fulfilled. I F*CKING love this game and it + Breath of the Wild are my two favorite exclusives for this console cycle. My only post in the thread until I beat it cause i dontwanna see no spoilers lol

But this game is FIRE. What a hell of a way to close out the PS4 era...they did it

Certainly the first good first party exclusive for the playstation in a very long time, breathtaking environment with overall enjoyable combat and an open world to explore. That's why sony put this as the ps4's swan song, this is a game that could be enjoyed by many, just go in, slash some enemies, explore and get some new moves. It's designed to gain mass appeal. I certainly see myself enjoying this for about 20-25 hours.

The biggest flaw comes from very forgettable character design, some quite ugly even. Also some cut scenes feeling out of place as the color tone takes me out of the open world environment which decreases immersion. Other complaints being story is far too linear, plus not enough stuff in the open world where I can cause massive chaos with.

My ps4 fans are at full speed all the time with this game. I guess demanding game + heatwave + no air conditioner is a bad combo. The noise doesn't affect me much, but I'm concerned for the console life (it's a launch model with a crazy personality).
A worthy opponent hahaha. I'm glad we are in the middle of winter here. My PS4 is not noisy most of the time because I clean it every weekend, then the cold is just the cherry on top of the cake.

Doesn't sound as positive as i was hoping.. anyone that seems to point out issues with the game gets pushed around in here as usual for sony fans. Guess i'll wait for it to go on sale and play it on PS5 hopefully with enhancements.

These load times are insane. It's dawned on me that those PS5 load times will get me to stick with hard difficulty more often. Dying regularly won't be such a pain.

The game is not that easy on Normal. Camps are tough, especially when you're seen and like 6+ guys swarm you. Good luck.

Combat takes some skill, after 3 or so hits you're critical and the only way to heal is use those orbs that only fill if you are skillful (doing a parry etc). Multiple enemies do attack at the same time, and some will follow up their red sign stab with another slash so you can't always retaliate right away.

Stealth is of the most basic kind, its like Horizon. But handy to reduce enemy numbers in camps. This game feels a lot like Horizon in fact. It also has a kind of similar look to it.

Damn it kinda sucks that it's a japanese dub because the lips don't align with the voices...I'm not sure what to go with. I've only played 2 hours with japanese, did not try english but if anyone played a lot more with both which is better? Obviously japanese voices should be the proper choice in a fucking japanese setting but whenever I look at those cutscenes it ruins the mood and the fact that the facial animation themselves are not that good doesnt help either.

Random observations:
- Fights against tons of enemies fucking ROCK. You feel so powerful killing them all despite being easy to kill yourself. An orgasmic system imho, so much fun.
- The game starts fucking SLOW. Like really SLOW. But then it picks up. So far every single hour it gets better and better
- Some pretty cool sidequests unironically reminding me of the Witcher tbh
- Stealth is alright, it's not as bad as we thought based on reviews. Yeah full on combat is more fun, but stealth is cool too. Satisfying gore btw.
- Circle to roll upgrade to prevent fall damage is ESSENTIAL for traversal
- Fuuuuuck Khotun ngl what an asshole can't wait to kill that fucker
- Some armor sets look so good it's crazy
- Put Jin in PS All Stars 2 pls

Thank god friendly fire for horses isn't on. Every time I go to mount it, I instinctively hit triangle (heavy attack), like every other game ever that has a mode of transport. Sorry horso

Yeah I started with Japanese and changed after an hour or two. Partly because the lip synching and partly because reading the bottom of the screen was distracting me from pretty graphics, and sometimes in combat. The English VO is pretty good thankfully

Breh, it adds to the immersion with the wind. Launch console here as well. Loudest it's been in a while. Much louder than it was with TLOU2.

I just unlocked an awesome sword kit. The second white one, I don't remember the name. Also finally found a place to upgrade weapons. One upgrade for my sword, assassin blade, and bow. I almost didn't want to upgrade the katana because I love the combat and I want each encounter to last longer. Playing on hard and I hope they add a new game plus with an even harder setting. Also upgraded the first armor you get besides the starting one that is broken. Having a blast checking the question marks, following the 🦊 and 🐦 for loot. I'm enjoying the side missions a lot as well. This is going to make Valhalla seem even more janky and ugly later this year, huh?

How’s the game so far? I haven’t started yet.

I’ve played about 8 hours. I think it’s very good.

For reference I haven’t played an AC since black flag but have played sekiro and ds1-3, and RDR2.

The combat has a somewhat similar feel to sekiro one on one but in this game you’re rarely one on one - most of the battles you are way out numbered. To help there are more options than sekiro to deal with combat and that takes a bit of learning. The game throws you straight into it pretty much.

It’s almost like a mash up of sekiro and GoW in terms of feel - mashing won’t work, parrying is fairly narrow timing window and you’ll be attacked by multiple enemies so sometimes you have to back off and regroup rather than pounding a particular guy.

The health system is quite cool - it’s easy to burn through it and then find that you’re trying to eek out kills on min health. Getting additional health during combat is a risk/reward matter. There’s no health to pick up, it has to be earned.

So far the stealth side is default videogame stuff. I sort of feeL like this is the easy mode for people who don’t wanna fight too much.

I like the way the story arcs out into sub plots. The world is huge - I’m gonna guess it’s getting on for RDR size.

I like the wind and the way things are presented - I expected those to be gimmicky but actually they do add something to the immersive nature. The game doesn’t hand hold too much on the missions so there’s no waypoint marker fatigue in it.

It’s good.

Yes it’s there. The major gust is called by the pad. But when you don’t call it particles are still flowing int he direction of your selected target. It’s more subtle to read but it’s there.

Is it me, or does the game look better and more realistic in Kurosawa Mode?

You mean the black & white mode right? Kurosawa Mode just not add black and white color, but a tons of Film Grain with helps A LOT for making a movie like those old japanese movies.

Guys I'm about to go pick up mine, but I still have half of TLOU2 to finish.

Stop making such praises to the game, you're going to make me rush TLOU2.

Been playing again since last night.
Will reinforce what I said earlier, game is gorgeous and so much fun, love the combat. Also one of the few games I don't feel inclined to rush through the story. Camera can get a little annoying and I feel this game could have benefited from a lock on when multiple enemies are around but either way combat and battles are great.

Btw playing it on Hard and it is still fun and not annoyingly difficult if anyone's on the fence about what difficulty to play on. Please take into account I don't find Souls games hard either and I've platinumed Bloodborne.

Loving this game so far.
It starts slow as in the combat looks easier than expected on hard mode, however once you get to camps it starts to becoming way harder.
There are lance enemies, shielded enemies, dual wielded enemies, and so on.
Dual wielded soldiers are the most confusing to me, they do 2 different attacks of which one of them can't be parried but must be avoided, and they attack you all at the same time, so you have to act quickly.
Mashing buttons won't work, you will die easily, so you actually have to think about your next move.

Yeah, that one.

Started the game in Kurosawa Mode, was really impressed.
Then switched to normal just to see and it looked far more "gamey", so I just decided to do a full Kurosawa run afterall.

Somehow I'm just much more impressed with it. Details stand out much more.

Btw, is there a lock-on for combat?
The camera is annoying.

If it's turns out to be really really hard, can you change difficulty mid game?

I'm asking this because I played SW: Jedi Order on hard and that game it's kind of frustrating because the way it gets harder is by messing up the counter timing. It pisses on your skill and just says: "Hey, think you're that good, we're gonna fuck your timing pretty bad, because, well, that's our definition of harder."

Still, I beat the game on Hard mode lol, but was kind of frustrating.

It's really good, but I am very irritated at the lack of a hard lock on option. Camera kind of sucks without it. Tutorial sucks too. I have the accessibility option to hold QTEs enabled, what nothing in the game tells you is that when that setting is on, holding triangle during standoff is automatic so you only have to tap when an enemy strikes, I failed the tutorial standoff 10 times before figuring this out.

Start standoff, camera decides to zoom on a wood fence behind the character = dead
Camera needs some patching, it can be really annoying.

Maybe it's because I'm early and my Jin has only a few upgraades but this game is not easy.

I died a couple times just in the prologue area last night being lazy and just kinda button mashing. Though I've only put an hour into the game I'm liking combat so far, it doesn't require Souls style precision thank god, but it does make you pay attention to what you're doing or you'll be punished.

What the fuck is wrong with this game? Why does it switch my TV from 4K to 1080p? =\

When I turn off the HDR in-game it goes back to 4K. What is going on?

I found the same at first but it didn't take long for me to unlock another stance, upgrade some skill trees and unlock ghost weapons.

I know people were freaking out when you compared this games combat to Sekiro before release but now that it's out I think there are some similarities which mean you may find the combat in this a lot easier if you played Sekiro.

I'm having no difficulty landing perfect parries on hard difficulty for example and I don't think I'd find that so easy if it hadn't been ingrained in me from Sekiro. I think Jedi Fallen Order has a similar system as well?

As a massive massive Japanese history fan and a lover of the Samurai period, this camera is busting my balls.

I've gotten frustrated twice with the camera movement while going into tents or areas where the camera seemingly gets trapped. Cost me my life once.

Otherwise, really love some features, others not so much. Very solid game so far and the black and white presentation is insane. Love it.
