Ghost of Tsushima - Review Thread

There's a decent percentage of reviewers that are just tired of large, lengthy open world games - mainly because reviewing this game for a job where you have to power through it, and playing at your leisure with no deadline are two entirely different experiences.

I wonder if reviewers even really get to sit back and enjoy the game like us...To me that first experience...leisurely just strolling around and exploring the world means everything in a single player game. I'd have hard time enjoying an open world game if I had to power through to meet a deadline

Ehhhh like homie above said we been doing this long enough to know...naaaaah

Leaks historically happen once the games go into production physically as opposed to some random reviewer putting their livelihood on the line lol. Hell I've been involved in beta/alpha testing ever since that horrible 'Matrix Online' mmo and I've participated in dozens of tests since and leaks occur their too.

Review embargos are part of the way things go now..they just are. But as a consumer I wish we had more of an idea of how the game performs a lot sooner than 72 hours before its release(or day of)....and to some people a close review/embargo date signals a little uncertainty. I mean to keep it simple...if you got something dope...who wants to hide it?

I'm not speaking down on Ghosts...as I said in another post in the thread its probably my most anticipated exclusive for this entire generation...I'd say Breath of the Wild and this game are my most anticipated exclusives for this console cycle
Definitely not as “experienced” as y’all but I am old enough to know that we live in a digital age where it’s much easier to push leaks on millions of devices within seconds. Leaking things that don’t show you the entire picture or leaking certain things that make the game look better or worse (tlou2 for example). This makes it much riskier. If you don’t see the logic in that than you do you big fella

Listen young fella, I've been posting on videogame message boards since you've been in diapers...all the way back in the early 00s.

People did not congratulate studios/publishers when review embargos were lifted.

This is a relatively new occurrence that's popped up in the last year or two.

But don't worry. I'm going to solve this issue and figure out why everyone is becoming corporate zombies.

To normal people!
Not to be that guy, but there is nothing cringier in people clapping for reviewer compared to that first sentence of yours...

The combo young fella + being proud of posting in videogame forums for the last 20 years got me good, bravo sir! :lollipop_blowing_kiss:

Same. Even the best of games would feel like a slog

A lot of these reviews just seem to complain about the genre itself. Kinda like knocking a racing game - "at the end of the day, it's just a game where cars drive on a road repeatedly" or a fighting game - "there's some good things here, but when you get past those, it's just a game where two opponents injure each other and one has to lose"

In the olden days reviews were about what a game was. Now I dont even know what is being reviewed.

Are reviewers playing the game that is infront of them, or in their minds? Are they revieweing what they wish couldve been, or what is not there?

How did reviewes got so disconnected from the product, instead opting to discuss an idea?

My two recent go-to's for reviews (ACG and SkillUp) love it, so I'm onboard. I'm not at all tired of what some might deem an overdone open-world formula, so I have a feeling I'm going to really dig this one.

Skill up doesn’t like Last of Us 1 either, so shit needs context. Note, yet to play party 2 myself.

Yeah, and the reasons he didn't are the very reasons I did. Regardless of that though, I respect his opinions because I think they're coming from a genuine place. It's why I watch Angry Joe's reviews too, although I could do with a little less clowning from him.

Are you trying to "win" on a technicality, or do you honestly believe that gamers have been congratulating developers/publishers at the exact same rate since the dawn of time?

You have no corner to hide in now. The spotlight is everywhere! Choose your fate!

No, I'm trying to say that you're chatting bollocks, this has been a thing for many years, not just the last two, and it isn't remotely weird. That's all.

Lots of glazing over huge shitty factors that make the game suck and deciding on a higher score than deserved.

It seems to only have 84 on average though.

So it's not like it is getting loads of 10 out of 10 reviews.

Most basically boil down to "its great but not perfect".

Yet you have a problem with even that?

Any examples of a game that has no shitty factors and doesn't suck just so we can see how reviewers scored that compared to this one?

"at its core, it’s just another open-world game. I found myself audibly sighing every time I crested a hill towards a mystery objective only to find another fox to follow or another haiku to compose."

Funny how BotW had the exact same issue and yet nobody said anything about it.

Story was the only reason I finished that mess, but like that was a great story. Stories in ubi games tho? 🤢🤮

I enjoyed WD2, and LOVED AC2, some of the Far Cry games... and some others. They are often the same thing over and over and over, I do agree there. I guess, maybe I like banging my head against the wall doing repetitive things.

Which One is the original do you think?

It could be genuinely what they think because reviewers believe they're speaking for the majority of people. The thing is, even if what they're agreeing with is actually there, what they're saying are the very reasons I actually like these games and what I'm looking for. I hate this 'oh, it doesn't do anything new' and it drives me nuts. I play an AC game because it's an AC game, I play a RAC game because it's an RAC game. I don't want any major changes. Only GOW has managed to completely change the normal dynamic of a franchise (in my opinion) but in doing so, was compared to other games. There are only a certain amount of things a third person open world game can do and we've reached the point where very few new things are possible. Comparing is stupid and pointless.

I think youre right. When I was younger I wanted to be a video game tester (like every other young nerd), I have heard its one of the worst jobs you could have. Games as work would be a chore, and probably kill gaming for me. I want to just relax and enjoy it, not have to take notes or identify every little bug.

Wait 2-3 months, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. When the zeitgeist is over, and reality sets in.

I disagree. I think it's becoming much more prevalent lately.

My theory... people are getting weirder due to social media. Bizarre behavior is becoming normalized. It's like strange corporate virtue signaling is now not cringey to more and more people as time matches on.

But I must dig deeper. My journey to find a cure for this BS has many miles to go.

Witcher 3 as well, but looks like those types of game have some sort of bulletproof.

The Witcher 3 and BOTW really excel in other areas, come on guys let it go. Not everything small talking point needs to be a "gotcha" thing, especially when talking about 50+ hours experiences.

I should have said this gen my bad dawg. AC2 is my favorite game of all time and I platinumed WD2 but didn’t enjoy it one bit lol .fc3 was amazing. So I think we agree more than we don’t lol

Wow, between this and TLOU2 the divergence between mainstream gaming journalists and independent reviewers is more noticeable than ever.

Game looks awesome btw can’t wait to play it.

Yeah. It's kind of interesting.

For example a couple of the main sites seem to be grumbling about the open world genre just being tiresome but in the SkillUp review they guy says there is no level gating or grind or obligation to do the open world content.

Sometimes I feel like the larger outlets do have a sort of template for RPG, open world, racing, MMO etc where they will make all of the same criticisms over and over.

Its weird to have major outlets marking a game down because the open world thing is so over done but then the more independent reviewers are like "the open world stuff isn't mandatory".
