Ghost of Yōtei - Journey Through The Edge Of Japan Video

True but they still use photogrammetry to some degree I bet. Before the stylization.
At a material level, possibly. But there aren't many 1:1 matches.

The matsumae castle in GoY is a real place. Though the locale is not similar.

Still a stunning place to visit regardless. Definitely on my bucket list.

A couple of flat looking areas, but all the open environments look absolutely gorgeous.

Love what they've done with the music too. The first one was no slouch either, in that department.

Looks like this shrine, which I thought was pretty flat in the state of play, got a nice glow up!

SoP :
  • Distant trees look extremely sparse, almost like LoD had reached its limit
  • Shrine is missing shrine objects
  • Lighting looks pretty flat and cartoony (may be due to ToD as well)

Now:
  • Distant tree LoD is exactly where it should be. Near complete coverage all over the hills.
  • Shrine has shrine objects
  • Lighting has more depth. Different ToD, so can't tell if it's better.
  • The rock textures have changed from their usual light grey. See bottom left near the roots and the little patch below the shrine

An amazing glow up although it does make me suspicious seeing such an improvement in a carefully captured trailer like this. The latest combat gameplay videos more resemble the SoP footage.

It's possible the draw distance may have been adjusted to capture a static scene, but I doubt the art would have been changed just for the trailer.

Easy to get these day time areas with direct sunlight looking great. The problem occurs with indirect lighting. When the sun is at the top producing very little shadows, you will get great light coverage everywhere. thats why those orange fields look fantastic, while the night time scenes and other scenes in the forests with no sunlight look so flat.

To be fair, AC Shadows, outlaws and Avatar also struggle with this during night time looking rather flat, but the AO and shadow coverage at least makes them look accurate even if they dont pop off the screen like the game does during daytime.

No doubt. All ray tracing techniques are objectively better when done right. Hope they add one in for the inevitable PS6 patch. The beautiful environmental art will absolutely mesmerize with RTGI. Would be a shame to wait another 6 years for something like that from SP. And we wouldn't even know if they are sticking to this franchise at that point.

Good comparison.

In the 2nd picture, the LOD effect is most visible with the trees on the faraway mountains in the background. There are so many now.

Whoever thinks this barely looks any better than GoY needs to get his/her eyes checked.

IQ is a clear step above the original, volumetric effects are way better, obviously foliage is a league above GoT and draw-distance is much better.

It looks like the first game with some improvements to asset quality and lighting. GOT was mediocre Ubislop, so I have no excitement for this.

looks last gen as fuck
Some people in this forum lead everyone to believe that this gen is about what a 4080 can do with RTGI. And it's not. It's about having 50x faster storage, better CPUs to hit 60fps and up the resolution closer to 4K. And I think that's pretty neat. Open worlds are a stress test for a hardware and so far none of the promises of the higher end had delivered in such scenarios.

Youtube is far more representative of the general public than Gaf will ever be, at least.
No shit, billions of people using yt vs how many gaffers?

At least you don't have fake comments made by bots on gaf.

Althought everydaybeast come pretty close.

And that is why you will find the far more moronic takes on youtube, which is saying something when you read certain posts here...
Anyway the point is, why complain of being the minority on the subject of yotei graphics on neogaf ?
You can have a contradictory opinion without saying the ones who don't think like you are lying, or don't actually don't like video games and are very mean, etc. Also having to turn to youtube comments to find arguments going your way is pretty telling.

The trailer looks very, very nice. I cant wait to immerse myself in the world.
I hope the game lives up to the first one. Atsu looks good as a protagonist, and I'm excited to see what the developers do with her backstory. I hope it turns out well.

What are you on about?

I don't care what the majority on Gaf thinks.
It wasn't even me who dragged youtube into this.🤨

Did the "youtube agree with me" argument back fired that much ?
I didn't say "youtube agree with me", I pointed out that Gaf is far less representative of the average consumer than a medium like Youtube, as someone else pointed out the stark contrast in the YT comment section vs general concensus on Gaf.

Given the speed boosting, commentary on horse jumping and the obstacles they have placed on the flower stream, I wonder if there is some kind of horse race/time trial side content, or if that's just to add a little spice to the open world traversal.

A mixed bag visually - the overcastness in so many scenes isn't helping. The song was cool.
Yeah someone at SP clearly likes overcast skies. I need to see that aurora borealis asap! And some regular days with puffy white clouds would be nice too.

If there wasn't any context to the conversation you would be right.
Since there is context and you obviously want to be in bad faith let's agree to disagree.
Don't spend too much time answering to people you don't care or trying to take them down a peg by reminding them their opinion is the minority, it is useless and you don't care about them.

It's insane! But that's console fanboyism for ya.
Who is the console fanboy here exactly though? The majority of people criticizing the graphics are the same guys who still sing praises for Sonys first party devs tech bar raisers in the ps3 and ps4 gen. Would people who have bought Sony hardware for the past 3 gens and decide to criticize the underwhelming tech be console fanboys?

Agreed. For example, Punished Miku is the most level headed individual here. Zero bias detected.

Serious note, I'm not impressed by this games technical delivery of graphics at all. What is impressive is the art direction and presentation of Japan. If you want to stroke off to graphics in a similar setting, there is AC:Shadows.

Wait I thought Punsihed miku was banned?

I mean, yeah, the artstyle is great, no doubt, but it can only carry things so far, it's not exactly cell shaded. When the lighting is outside the carefully constructed ideal conditions, and the low-res textures, even by PS4 standards, are on display, even the art style can't cover for that. Areas covered by vegetation can hide the the anemic geometric detail and woeful textures, when the vegetation pulls away things become very unfllatering. I mean, the thing that is harder to digest is the fact that this studio could have delivered something jawdropping if they showed some ambition to push tech to match that high tier art. I mean, I remember the vertical slice from Tusihima before it was downgraded, that was the bare minimum I was hoping for with better draw distance and improved settings. Unfortunately while draw distance is better than that of the vertical slice, there are aspects like textures and bounce lighting that are still inferior on a next gen console which makes it hard to digest.

I think the gameplay improvements will be great and will significantly help with reviews. But in terms of technical presentation..... this is bad.

Sorry there's no sugarcoating this. Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 to Horizon Forbidden West on PS4 is a bigger technical leap than Tsushima PS4 vs Yotei PS5. And both sequels had nearly identical development time. We aren't wrong to question exactly wtf is going on with the visuals for one of Sony's flagship franchises.

I preordered the gamepad with gold elements. This game will be discounted sooner or later, and eventually ported to PC, Switch, Microwave. The hardware is eternal.
So let's hope the gamepad is good. As for the game — if you liked the original, you're less likely to enjoy this one because of the character, but more likely to love it (in comparison with first Tsushima) for everything else.

Hope they clean the kaka off before shipping

Impressive graphically, but at the same time - as stale and almost dead in the art/atmosphere department. Too bad
I think the complete opposite
