Ghost of Yōtei - Journey Through The Edge Of Japan Video

The game looks way sharper and more vibrant compared to Tsushima even with shitty youtube compression. Those of you saying this looks last gen are high.

I think some people are going to be eating crow once DF do their analysis.
it looks the same but bigger more vast open world , just because its bigger doesn't mean its a next gen game or engine

Who is the console fanboy here exactly though? The majority of people criticizing the graphics are the same guys who still sing praises for Sonys first party devs tech bar raisers in the ps3 and ps4 gen. Would people who have bought Sony hardware for the past 3 gens and decide to criticize the underwhelming tech be console fanboys?

We are at the point where people that love to talk about graphics in games are viewing things through the lens of checkboxes and 400% zoomed in images now. Like a gaffer in this thread said, "What is impressive is the art direction and presentation of Japan." The idea that people can say the graphics in Elden Ring are amazing, while acting as if this game doesn't look great is silly and more fanboys being fanboys. That doesn't mean they are Xbox fanboys, btw.

How can anyone say this game looks bad, but then say the latest Donkey Kong game looks amazing?

I don't think this is happening though? People who think GoY looks bad technically also think Donkey Kong looks bad technically. They would also think Elden Ring looks bad technically. Even I think Elden Ring looks bad from a tech standpoint. Looks dated as hell. Great art and creature designs, but looks two generations behind. If you told me this is a PS3 game, I'd believe you. Outside of polygon count, literally nothing looks last gen, let alone current gen. It's like someone superimposed different objects lit completely differently onto each other like a kid's collage. I would even argue that, as whole, it doesn't look good aesthetically (but that's just my personal taste).

These are all shots from threads where people are praising the graphics, so I'm not even strawman-ing. But I wouldn't shit up every elden ring thread about it... and like you said, it would be crazy if someone had an inconsistent view across these games. But I don't think there are many with such a view.

I just wish more people would speak on a game's graphics and not ONLY mean the "technical" stuff. Art design, creature model design, character design, etc should matter too. Along with the technical stuff.

I'm able to empathize with the complaints because you can get great art, creature, character design on any console. You can only get great tech on the latest console, because their existence fundamentally moves the goal post and the industry forward. As a gamer, you might still play the game and love the art, but as a tech enthusiast watching the industry, if the top tier studios don't put their best foot forward, you feel let down.

You already know my stance and enthusiasm for this game. This is just me trying to see from another's point of view and assuming they are expressing displeasure in good faith.

No one is talking about 400 zooms here; you don't need to zoom in to see atrocious textures and dated lighting. Even gaffers like Chief Dada, who are much more forgiving, can call it as it is, a middling upgrade at best vn compared to cross gn games.

Wait what...I have never seen anyone claim Elden Ring graphics are amazing... It's constantly shat on for its dated tech and horrible performance, its art style carries it pretty far, and that's what is praised. Its defense force compensates, but everyone knows it's dated, and no one expects anything from From in terms of tech since the PS3 days. Same with Donkey Kong, everyone calls it ugly, but it gets leeway because it's trying something new with physics at least.

smh, it doesn't look ugly, but.....I mean they had 5 fucking years with this.

If they are going to just reuse so many assets, I would have hoped for a deep focus on adding more interactive elements, gameplay changes, better Ai etc

I was in it day 1, but now....I'm strongly considering waiting for a sale, used etc.

OCT will be BF6 and Silent Hill F (I got the UK Steelbook version cause something wrong wit me...)

I wasn't really interested in this at launch but was planning to get further down the line, but now after hearing how one of the devs has reacted to current US events I won't be purchasing or supporting Sucker Punch anymore.

The art direction matters. The problem is that, while mindblowing in 2020, it has not evolved enough (or at all ?) to justify the work that was supposedly done between the original and the sequel.
And already in 2020, people were pointing out that the art direction was doing the heavy lifting in the game presentation, that the tech behind it was good but not great (apart for the almost instant loadings).

There is almost no discernible evolution between the first one and the sequel, in terms of tech and in terms of art direction.

See you call those people "the defense force", but aren't people allowed to like how Elden Ring looks? We don't have to act like it doesn't have any redeemable qualities art-wise.

Hey guys, check out my new book - Politics and Game Development: The Final Frontier

I know it's terrible. Everything in gaming is about politics now. It sucks.

Still buying the game Day 1 i won't allow anyone's politics ruin my enjoyment of games.
Good. Ultimately it's everybody's personal choice whether or not they want to let things like this affect purchases.

I personally hate how politics have infected everything and the developers disgusting comments and views definitely put a sour taste in my mouth however I would be a hypocrite to make a decision to boycott Ghost but still purchase products that have even distant ties to something like the CCP or the like. Maybe that makes me a terrible person being "complacent" to some but whatever.

For me though I wasn't super excited for Ghost anyway so it made it easier to just wait for a sale.

It's actually hilarious how this forum became the far fight Resetera
It's not and hasn't. We are still here, right? Don't know about you, but I'm a proud liberal feminist. Doing just fine on GAF. Is it right leaning? Hell yeah. But far from unreasonable.

Nah, you're just being reasonable. Collective responsibility is a harmful thing, and i don't see the point in punishing everyone for the words of a few.

It's sad that in the current situation it feels awkward to write anything positive about this game, it has been so devalued by haters and nitpickers that i'm starting to seriously wonder if it wouldn't be better to avoid these kinds of threads at least until i have the opportunity to see its pros and cons for myself, after release.

Kinda strange thing to say on a forum dedicated to video games. :messenger_grimmacing_

The ignore thread option is wonderful. If it looks like it's gonna be drama I just excise it usually.
