But also yes the story has me hooked in the series. I still maintain I'm stoked at this video series because I would get extremely frustrated at the controls like Drew and probably put it down.

Is 4 pretty approachable control wise?

4 controls okay. A lot of people will probably tell you that it controls well, but I maintain that "okay" is the best compliment I can give it.

But 2/3 of that game is cutscenes, so it doesn't really matter all that much ;)

All the games control like shit until you learn how they control, at which point they just control kinda badly

but workably

The rose part was hilarious. But you can see Drews face contort when she mentions that Raidens room was empty. Like literally bewildered.

This episode has some great reactions.

Amazing. The second half of MGS2 was always what I was waiting for in this series. The fuckery has just started.

I also can't wait for MGS3. I think drew will really enjoy the setting of that game

Respectfully disagree-- the controls are absolutely hard to wrap one's head around because of their relative complexity, but once you've got it permanently drilled into your memory what does what, they will reliably do everything you ever need them to do.

It's not like konami has some secret build of MGS2 lying around with some way-better control scheme that they balanced the retail game around, the game was designed, balanced, and tuned with these extremely complicated controls in mind. But everything is reliable, and when you know what you're doing, the player character will always react in exactly the way you expect him to. That, to me, invalidates any claim to bad controls.

But I'm also the sort of nut who thinks people are crybabies about old-school Resident Evil games and that they control just fine for exactly the same reasons (except Resident Evil's controls are actually quite simple, considering it's essentially a two-button game.) So maybe I'm just crazy.

On the topic of Solid Scanlon's Deep Descent into the Intense, Crazy, Deep Kojima World: They should consider doing a MGS2 Debrief podcast or something, because I'm not sure even a 30-minute discussion at the end of the final video will actually illuminate everything. They could also consider taking e-mails so that people can chime in with their own thoughts, observations, and theories, but Dan would have to pretty aggressively filter them to make sure no spoilers for MGS3/4 sneak in.

I also feel like Dan might want to just spell out for Drew that La Li Lu Le Lo =
a nanomachine speech filter to prevent Important People from talking openly about The Patriots by name
, since IIRC it's not really addressed until MGS4 and it's not in any big grand reveal sort of way, just a "oh yeah btw...". Anything to give Drew one less thing to worry about in all of this.

Finally, although Dan missed his popcorn gag for The President speech, hopefully he brings some popcorn along for
The Colonel's speech at the end.

I suppose, but getting to that point is such a fucking trial it takes like two game playthroughs to get used to it.

At least Octocamo helps significantly in MGS4

I didn't realize how similar Shadow of Mordor's combat was to the Batman games until I started playing it just now. You even press the same combination of buttons to do the instakill move after getting a certain number of hits in a row.

Dan and Drew trying to piece together everything toward the end of this latest MGS reminds me soooo much of conversations I've had throughout my life about Metal Gear. I've spent too much time talking with my friends about "So, this guy's working for this guy, right?" and things like that. Feels good to see other people have those same thoughts.

lol. That's great.

It's funny, I don't have any recollections of laughter, frustration or eye-rolling at Rose when I think back on my time with MGS2, but watching the guys work their way through it now, fuck me. Her conversations with Raiden are fantastic, in all the wildest inappropriate ways. She is almost as bad as the twitter bar during the UPF #IDARB segment...

MGS controls are bad, but consistent. It's when you can't predict whether or not your button presses will do what you want them to do that it's an issue.

I'd say binding the action to go into low visibility/noise/movement mode and the action to do a fucking cartwheel to the same button is a bit ridiculous.

Except presumably if you know how to use a controller you'll quickly figure out that to crouch/go prone, you simply don't touch the left stick, and if you wanna roll around you do.
It's really not that hard conceptually to understand.
And considering both actions are the most important "special" movements when you're either sneaking or running away, it actually makes perfect sense to have them mapped to the button your right thumb is always resting on.

Man, I was crying with laughter from just witnessing Drew's reactions. These next episodes are gonna be good.

Part 11 is long...

It will either be the Vamp fight or Emma escort mission that will drag out the next episode. Because that Vamp fight could either be a Grey Fox or Vulcan Raven scenario, depending on how Drew decides to handle it.

I'm up to date on MGScanlon and I've never been more sad ;___;

Now what am I going to watch as I dungeon crawl in Persona Q?

Of course it's not hard to understand conceptually. The difficulty comes from having to react quickly (for example to being spotted) and not having the time to specifically wait for the analog stick to stabilize after letting go of it.

That fight is so incredibly simple you just
use the grenade launcher to shoot him, when he's under water (depth charge style) or walking around.

I have awful visions of drew pissing around placing claymores making it hard for himself though.

So, having just gotten the platinum trophy in Shadow Of Mordor, I find myself with some free time to get through another, maybe two other, game(s) before the GOTY madness starts...

What do you guys/gals think would be the great titles of 2014 that everyone needs to have played before listening to the GB GOTY stuff, with regards to story spoilers and such?

As far as GB is concerned Bayonetta 2, COD Advanced Warfare and Jazzpunk.

Yeah, I always thought that fight was dumb. I did a similar tactic to you but with grenades + the launcher and it was a cinch. Reading afterwards that you can
shoot out the knives he throws or whatever, and that you can break his freeze on you
, I was like, well, I totally didn't need any of that. One of the less interesting fights in the game IMO. Kind of just a brute force thing.

I'm sure Scanlon will find his own way though.

It'll be fine when he remembers that he's got pentazemin.

Also if we're talking about the sniping section with E.E, you can just get Snake to do 90% of the work for you.

Hmm The Marvelous Miss Take does make a good argument. I really hate Splinter cell stealth "I'm pulling you out"

Just give me a SMG me & Drunk Michael Ironside can deal with these terrorists.

I agree with them about Stealth games (discussion during the QL)... Not a fan in general but I have to say that I had a ton of fun with Mark of the Ninja.

While I was watching Metal Gear Scanlon, the 20th Anniversary PS4 edition went for sale in Canada and sold out in 10 minutes. I missed the window.
