I think you're right. When the pressure is on they're getting more aggressive and leaving their goal vulnerable.

This is an actual thing in hockey called "score effects." When looking at possession numbers like Corsi (which is really just shot attempts) you generally want to look at Corsi close, which is each teams shot attempts when the score is tied or either team has a one goal lead.

The philosophy is exactly as you said, teams ahead tend to turtle a bit, and teams behind get a lot more time with the puck, or in this case, ball.
