I think both were aimed at teens (the original Dragonball is surprisingly high on the ecchi scale), but Dragonball has a distinct SLO/Comedy aspect that is largely lost in Z.

Based on my 26 episodes, the English dub was fine enough for me. I believe it was done by Funimation - who are good at their job apparently.

Yeah thats why I've never given it a try before. Its the same kind of thing with anime like Bleach or Naruto. Its such a massive amount of episodes to go through which is why I tend to stick to the shows that end after a season or two.

Yup. And there's actually MUCH less filler than you'd think. A lot of its time frame is taken up by recaps and other tricks the show uses to fill the timeslot for the episode. Sure an arc is 60 episodes, but not much really happens in that timeframe, especially more than most 24 episode shows.

Its a good show for when you're doing homework or doing dishes or something since you can easily knock out a few episodes in a sitting, though it is a pretty show addictive in nature. I enjoy the hell out of it, or I wouldn't have kept up with it for the last few years.
