Well, it's weird. Many of them start off as "adult" games on the PC, then get censored and released to a bigger audience on consoles/handhelds, at which point the more popular ones become bigger multimedia projects.

Fate Stay/Night and Steins;Gate are probably the most recent examples, but there are countless others.

They also vary wildly in terms of how they incorporate game systems. Some games have complicated systems that might as well make them RPGs, while others are just choose your own adventure type games.

I see. Shame about their origins - regardless of their current state, where they came from can often be a sticking point for mass (worldwide) adoption.
