Giant Bomb #9 | More Dan Meets The Eye

I would hazard a guess that Dan has never described himself as a journalist - even though working on a print mag gives him a decent claim to that title. I bet none of the guys think of themselvss as such, excepting maybe Patrick.

lol, Jeff's character name in Diablo 3 is so good.

What was it?

What was it?

ChieSatonaka (Of Persona 4 fame)

And I like the enthusiasm Dan has brought but his tastes and general personality are so completely divorced from mine that I don't enjoy him as much as the others. Then again I could say the same for most of the crew, at least in terms of taste, so one imagines I'll warm up eventually. Just wish they'd brought some one on with more diverse tastes.

Dan was pretty annoying in that Akiba QL. I get that it is a weird and niche Japanese title that won't appeal to everyone, but his demeanour about 'dorks' and generalisations about anime were just off putting. I can't work out how much is real and how much is put on, but he comes across as pretty natural which suggests that is how he feels. Talking about 'cool bars with pool tables' vs 'dorky bars'. Even seemed like Jeff was pulling back from some of his comments.

sounds like someone watches anime

Farewell I guess. You probably shouldn't reup then since Dan will be in everything from now on. The majority of people seem to find him to be a great addition. I personally think that this is another golden age of Giant Bomb content after perhaps a year of them being in a slump (though who can blame them for that).
Honestly, I just can't tell if it's an act or not. Vinny's "dumb" comes off as childlike innocence, so there's a joy to listening to his reactions when playing games. I think we all still remember the Bufu moment in the P4 endurance run. Dan's "dumb" comes off as willful ignorance that may or may not be trolling, so I don't know if I can actually trust anything that he says about anything that isn't wrestling related. I can see how it can get really grating...

Like, when he says he would eat a biodegradable fork, I actually believe he would do it. And that scares me.

The problem is that he basically defends his trolling with supposed self-awareness regarding his wrestling hobby - which everyone on the Powerbombcast admits is shit now (especially since RAW became a 3 hour informercial for their dying WWE Network) - so I really don't know. People keep telling him that Japanese wrestling is better, yet he refuses to watch it and is instead going to reward the WWE by going to their crappy PPVs. Maybe it's all ironic?

I tried to eat one of those corn forks once. I was influenced by the time I ate some of the corn packing peanuts and they were pretty good. It didn't work out as well with the fork.

The fork thing was obviously a joke :)

He has said that the reason he "refuses to watch" Japanese wrestling is because he spends so much time on American wrestling, that getting into Japanese wrestling on top of that would pretty much take up all his entertainment time. I think that's a pretty good reason, getting really into Japanese wrestling is a huge time investment if you actually want to understand the storylines etc. And there's nothing ironic about his love for wrestling :P

If dan says something that annoys or offends you, probably the best thing to do is remind yourself that this is a guy who used and re-used a shoebox as a cooking vessel for microwaveable hot dogs.

The smart thing to do would be to stop watching 5+ hours of an inferior product every week - which he admits is shit by the way - and instead watch Japanese wrestling. But maybe he's more a fan of the WWE than he is a fan of wrestling.

He had heard of recycling, just never did it in the Midwest ;)
Someone here says they recycle in Minneapolis, so I dunno. lol

That's the only way I can cope. Honestly, when Drake called him out on the Bombcast a couple of weeks ago, it was like a kind of catharsis. Like, everyone else at GB was too polite to criticize a coworker - even in a joking manner - and it took an outsider to come in and call Dan on his "supposed" insanity. Drake is like the scientist trying to warn the rest of the world that aliens are going to destroy the world but no one believes him. lol

So, if someone's opinion differs from your own it's trolling now? It's a stupid word and attitude.
It is if he's doing it on purpose to elicit a reaction. That's the very definition of the word.

Like when he made fun of soccer fans for crying during the World Cup and then quickly apologized for it a few hours later.

I just see it as over sensitivity. Why would anyone need an apology for that?

no, not really (although my old animated Lum avatar from earlier GAF days might have suggested otherwise). He just came across dismissive of an entire group of people.

I hope it is intentionally ironic, because to an outsider like me, wrestling seems as niche/geeky/dorky as anime - they're both big business with intense fans. If I was in a glasshouse full of wrestlers I certainly wouldn't be throwing any stones.

To be fair, if you are a fan and you cry over the World Cup -- or any sporting event -- you kinda deserve it.

If someone told him that Hulk Hogan or Giant Haystacks are phony and why is he so serious about wrestling anyway, it doesn't matter - why don't you do something meaningful with your life, it's only a fucking sport, I imagine he'd get pretty upset.

Treat others the way you'd like to be treated yourself. It is one thing to not like something that others do, but you shouldn't dismiss it quite as off-handedly as he quite regularly appears to. Especially if you're on an internet site with a broad audience.

He admitted he was trolling sports fans at least, because...

To be fair, if you are a fan and you cry over the World Cup -- or any sporting event -- you kinda deserve it.
... IIRC, he admitted to getting choked up/emotional at Undertaker losing at Wrestlemania. So he seems to have some selfawareness.

My problem is that I just have no idea when he's being "on" and when he's actually being himself, so everything seems like it's a performance of some kind. There's a small part of me that wonders if they staged the whole Pog thing so that Dan would lose badly, as part of some elaborate work. :p

I know you're half joking, but why shouldn't they cry if they're passionate about it? At the same time they need to have the confidence to handle a joke or criticism.

The internet feels like playgroup where you have to walk on eggshells (not egg whites) to not upset the children.

Well, I think it's ridiculous that anyone would feel so invested in the outcome of any game of chance that they would feel devastated that a team that happened to be geographically located where they live loses a game (even worse in professional sports, where pretty much no professional players are actually from the cities that they play in), but I've also never felt the need to make fun of people for feeling that way.

I mean, NBA GAF had to be banned for a while because of how seriously posters took that shit, but hey, people really like their basketball and more power to them.

I'm fine with Giant Bomb basically ditching reviews. They don't make much sense given what Giant Bomb is nowadays. The more video content akin to QLs or UPF, the better.

Does anyone have a favourite Dan article or review from the GI days? I've never actually read anything by him.

people getting scared of tears is always silly

it's an emotional reaction that you practically have no control over anyway; saying "lol you're crying at [x thing that seems trivial to some]" is literally the exact same as saying "lol your body reacts a certain way to things"

it's like saying laughter should be curbed for special occasions. or needing to take a dump

Exactly.

It's so tiresome to see a two page discussion any time Tomb Raider or some other dumb game is criticized "unfairly".

"Oh no, these internet men made a generalised statement about this thing I like! I bet they haven't even played it properly! I think I need to reconsider if I like them any more."

I would somewhat understand it if there was actually an effect, a conclusion or something tangible that mattered. But nope.

It's fair to say that it can get tiresome, even if it doesn't offend you or if you know their opinion has no impact on anything you like.

You think it's ridiculous, they don't. While you wouldn't make fun of them yourself, I don't see the problem with it to be honest.

It's how you deal with being offended that's the issue. You can take it on the chin, confident in your opinion or passion. Or you can whine about how a certain person said X about your favourite X. It's unhealthy and depressing to read.

I like Giant Bomb because it's personality driven, you are going to get their personal opinions on a range of different subjects, it's what makes it good and refreshingly different to the other big sites that try and remain neutral, or on safe ground. If we keep attacking them every time they say something bad about something we like, we will lose something special. There are enough sterile, "pander to everybody" sites out there already.

I can't understand being that emotionally invested in a sports team. I had an uncle who would lose his mind watching US football, he'd spend the whole game screaming and having a temper tantrum when the 49ers were losing -- I always thought he was crazy and irrational, and thats kinda how I see the people that cry over them.

I def agree with the second point.

He admitted he was trolling sports fans at least, because...

Which is ridiculous, but I'm sure he wouldn't demand someone apologize if they made fun of him for it.

I can kind of agree with that. I'm still unfamiliar with him so I'm not always sure when he's putting on his troll face. Jeff does it a lot too but I've listened to him long enough that I have an easier time sussing out the reality from "the work".

Looks like we had a case of jealousy and thin skin pop up over night.
I'll admit it's irrational and that people here are probably looking at me the same way I looked at them when Patrick was called a "SJW" or whatever by people in this thread and on Giantbomb itself.

I am just left in a constant state of incredulity every time Dan opens his mouth, and it's getting a bit annoying because it doesn't appear that there is any hidden depth there that makes the punchline funny.

Like when the Game Informer guy says Dan refuses to watch black and white films even though he majored in film, I have no idea if that's a real rule that Dan has or not. But because Dan is insane, I'm willing to believe that it is true and that he's never watched a film made before 1950.

When I was growing up in New Zealand in the 80s, soccer players were routinely referred to as "poofters" because they weren't thought to be as tough as rugby players, and rugby was the national sport. Dan calling soccer players wimps and children for crying is along the same lines just without the overtly homophobic angle. It's also completely ridiculous to single out soccer players as being the only adult sportspeople who cry.

If you want to troll soccer fans then tweet about all the fake injuries and diving.

If you want to criticise Dan's film tastes at least focus on the real issue: he thinks Macgruber is good.
Well, he thinks Terminator 3 is better than Terminator 2. (Or that Terminator 1 is better than Terminator 2). lol

Did they ever say what they were up to on Wednesday?

I had a dream that they went to Alcatraz and filmed scenes from The Rock 2 and now I want that to happen....
