Giant Bomb #9 | More Dan Meets The Eye

To be fair, I think he was making fun of the people in the stands crying and not the players.

It was both.

Just watched the Mailbag. Dan and Jason are in LA? Danny still in Germany?

With Drew in the control room, I think it's going to be a quiet UPF.

I'll admit it's irrational and that people here are probably looking at me the same way I looked at them when Patrick was called a "SJW" or whatever by people in this thread and on Giantbomb itself.

I am just left in a constant state of incredulity every time Dan opens his mouth, and it's getting a bit annoying because it doesn't appear that there is any hidden depth there that makes the punchline funny.

Like when the Game Informer guy says Dan refuses to watch black and white films even though he majored in film, I have no idea if that's a real rule that Dan has or not. But because Dan is insane, I'm willing to believe that it is true and that he's never watched a film made before 1950.

But that's what makes a personality-based anything great - you're not supposed to like every single aspect of everyone's personality (aside from Vinny, obviously), but how they work together.

Dan has been here for 5 minutes and he's already made Jeff, Brand and Drew more fun to watch and reignited Giant Bomb.

If something so minor is already making you feel incredulous, then it probably says more about your tolerance for others.

It was both.

Oh my god. He even apologised for that and deleted the tweets. Let it go.

But I bet this is about Tomb Raider, isn't it? It's totally about Tomb Raider.

I think I'm one of three guys here who doesn't mind Alex and his snarkiness, so I've never really had a problem with any of the people that have been through GB until now.

Perhaps. He just seems like a person who is "on" all the time and I'm just not enjoying that as much after the novelty wore off. It almost feels like every week we're supposed to get another "Dumb Dan" story, and I'm sort of ready for that gimmick/joke to die.

You're the one still obsessing over Tomb Raider by bringing it up in a completely unrelated conversation.

I'm simply responding directly to firehawk's posts.

Dan was pretty annoying in that Akiba QL. I get that it is a weird and niche Japanese title that won't appeal to everyone, but his demeanour about 'dorks' and generalisations about anime were just off putting. I can't work out how much is real and how much is put on, but he comes across as pretty natural which suggests that is how he feels. Talking about 'cool bars with pool tables' vs 'dorky bars'. Even seemed like Jeff was pulling back from some of his comments.

It probably because he has never seen a good anime before, all he know about is the weird stuff he saw online. And the game really didn't help to change his outlook.

So what if he was trolling, he's right. Football fans are hilarious.

Look. Football, especially the World Cup, is serious business. I will not stand for slander.

I'm writing a strongly worded letter to Les Moonves this very moment. That'll put Dan in his place.

I will join you as I am a big Tool fan (I am actually), I need to encourage the opening of his third eye.

Not for docking

If you ever find yourself getting upset at what Dan says, just remember: this is the guy who spent a whole summer eating hot dogs out of a shoebox

The heel turn!

Seriously though, good decision to backpeddle and apologise for that one. The “red-blooded American“ persona is fun, but it's a fine line, and easy to come across as legit stupid and arrogant instead.

And that's no fun at all.

It is if he's doing it on purpose to elicit a reaction. That's the very definition of the word.

Like when he made fun of soccer fans for crying during the World Cup and then quickly apologized for it a few hours later.

He IS doing it on purpose, he says dumb shit on twitter calling whole swathes of fans insulting names for something he doesn't like and then proceeds to call people out on twitter when they retaliate and all his circle jerk buddies all laugh about it.

It's getting pretty irritating to be honest, to the point where I hesitate to watch Quicklooks that he is half of.

This isn't me "being a jerk" or insulting the guy, I have nothing against him but his attitude riles people up, he's only been at Giantbomb for a few weeks he should be winning fans over not putting them off, this isn't to say he shouldn't be himself but c'mon there is a line and he's stepped over it a few times.

Does anyone have a favourite Dan article or review from the GI days? I've never actually read anything by him.

Here's a few of his reviews:

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/t...11/14/zelda-a-link-between-worlds-review.aspx

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/rambo_the_video_game/b/pc/archive/2014/02/26/rambo-review.aspx

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/mario_kart_8/b/wii_u/archive/2014/05/30/mario-kart-8-review.aspx

His written content is actually really straight forward. He comes across as pretty serious.

I feel exactly the same, I really don't know what to think of him. Sometimes I agree with the things he says and does, but others just annoy me.

Soccer fans (especially US soccer) are some of the most defensive especially when it comes to social media.

There is a massive us vs them mentality because of the way the sport has been treated in the country by mainstream media or by people who have never tried to watch or play the game.

I don't know how anyone could even get trolled by someone who didn't know what egg whites were

I'm sure Dan knows how he's portraying himself and he's fine with it.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt when he's as into games as he is. Ultimately that's why we're all interested in what's coming next. And what he's done with the site for these premium shows is nothing short of incredible.

Dan is very self-aware most of the time. He's commented that he's one of the biggest dorks there is, so people shouldn't feel too bad when he calls them dorks. He also has said on twitter (i think it was) that he's fine with being made fun of, he even is considering a book called "Comfortably Dumb" or something. I think he's an excellent addition to the site. He has given me some huge laughs since joining, and i think he really gives a good energy to the videos he's in, and works well with the other guys.

I didn't know dan was so hated, I think he is the best thing to happen to giant bomb in a long while.

He isn't. A few sensitive souls just get very serious about the stuff they like.

I legitimately love the World Cup, but sometimes you just gotta know when to take a step back.

Patrick gets tons of hate to this day.

By a tiny minority who have mostly been limited to Youtube. And tbh, do Youtube comments even count?

It is the Patrick affect. It will go away in 18 months.

It really isn't. I wasn't raging at Giantbomb for hiring him, I don't enjoy horror games so I don't really consume his content other than Worth Reading/Playing.

I thought Dan was a great hire at first but after listening to him insult people for liking things he thinks are dumb it is turning me off him very quickly.

I would like to buy you a beer.

Patrick gets tons of hate to this day.

To be fair, he's pretty terrible with his solo stuff. He's just really boring and grating. I liked him ok during the Crono Trigger ER and during some of his other Quicklooks with how he actively sought out stuff that others wouldn't touch, but I just can't watch any of his stuff since he's moved to Chicago.

c'mon there is a line and he's stepped over it a few times.

You're the one drawing this line and letting it get to you. He is a happy fella.

He's not going anywhere, he's doing exactly what he's paid to do and more. Create content, drive traffic and letting a couple mice loose in the room to stir things up is what the site sorely needed.

I think it's kinda exaggeration to say Dan hates anime. He even said in the QL that he liked what he saw of One Piece, but that the writing in Akiba was a lot more grating -- and i agree with it. I thought the writing in it was terrible.

It is the Patrick affect. It will go away in 18 months.

I get the feeling he's being better accepted than Patrick was, outside of the initial backlash he and jason got for being both male and white.

Patrick had some issues that he's worked on with time. He had the tendency to talk over people and go off on tangents at times, both things he's much better about. But you know what they say about first impressions. I think he's been a great contribution to the site, and being the journo duder he makes the site better for his efforts.

The worst thing you can say about dan is that everything is wrestling and that he believes that all references come from the simpsons. The former can be a bit much at times but the latter just means his heart and head are in the right place.

I don't go up to groups of people I don't know and insult them for liking a thing I think is stupid/dumb/crap in real life.

I get the sense he doesn't actually think that anime fans are terrible people but likes to troll them since they seems to be really defensive about their hobby. Surprisingly, defensive people are excellent people to troll so this proves to be super effective against most anime fans, or i suppose most big fans of anything really. And no one has a more legit claim to dorkiness like a guy who's written a wrestling book.

A lot of you must find it really difficult to deal with people in day to day life. It's okay to not be the same.

I don't go up to groups of people I don't know and insult them for liking a thing I think is stupid/dumb/crap in real life.

The problem is the Jock in high school mentality of insulting people whether he is doing it in jest or not it's really obnoxious. Jeff can do it and you can tell he is joking and it is funny, Dan does it with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

For what it's worth I don't like football or anime so I am not saying it because I am butthurt about something, anyway I've said my piece don't want to keep bringing it up.

He does the thing Jeff does with Yoshi, except he does it with so many things it's not really funny. Even when I might agree with him, because Dota and the Walking Dead don't appeal to me as games either, it comes off as obnoxious.

Is going on twitter counted as going up to groups of people to insult them?

Jeff does it with way more stuff than just Yoshi. You just never noticed.

Yeah totally. And I say this as a person who is one of them. I see reactions from American soccer fans on the internet to shit on a regular basis that makes me cringe. It's almost as bad as console fans.
