I like the original Resident Evil games but Silent Hill never had the same control issues and general clunky feel. There are aspects of those games that are just poor and haven't aged well at all. On the other hand I can still play Silent Hill 1 and enjoy it. 2 and 3 hold up incredibly well but those are early 2000s so it's not quite the same.

The better solution is the Vita TV which has an HDMI out :).
For the few games that actually attempt to utilise the Vita's features that's a stopgap solution at best (although given the how Vita exclusives are looking of late that probably won't be an issue in the future).

Basically, not only were the tank controls a design choice for early resident evil games but they fit the gameplay as well. Tomb Raider's gridlike molasses movement didn't fit the game they were making about an agile and nimble young lady with a sense of adventure to her.

Has Sony said if you will be able to emulate the Vita's touch screen with the DS4's touch pad?

You can't, if I remember correctly. It's why some games that use the touch screen a lot straight up can't be played on that device. Pressing L3 or R3 brings up a cursor which can somewhat simulate touch, I think.

I'm sure they did practice because the original Tomb Raider games were actually challenging platformers instead of bad Uncharted rip offs with horrible ubisoft game design.

I remember absolutely HATING Tomb Raider 3 when it came out. It controlled like garbage and the camera was awful. That's my recollection of the game at least, been a while now. And I liked most things when I was 12-13 years old. I've got no love for that franchise at all, and didn't know that people defended how those first games played before the new Tomb Raider was released.

Tomb Raider 3 is the hardest game I've ever played. It was completely brutal.

I've played most Tomb Raiders (didnt finish 5, never played 6), I think my absolute favorite is Tomb Raider 4. It was a great combination of puzzles and combat and it had some really inventive levels (like the great pyramid level: http://www.skribblerz.com/tr/tombraider/tr4zxcgreatpyramid08.jpg)

Jason is worried about puns in the video descriptions? Vinny and Drew have committed far worse sins.

Also, I think Jeff has spent enough money on trying to get video out of a vita. The Sony guy obviously was not in charge of giving out dev units because no press outlets seem to have them. As someone said, if US Vita TV does nothing for them then fuck it.

To be fair that is only a few games that have the touch as integral - they have quite the back catalogue to cover.

Clicking in the L3 and R3 sticks will simulate a finger on the touch screen (or back touch) for games that do require it. That was from the Japanese FAQ if I recall correctly.

But no DS4 touch pad compatibility as far as I know.

You don't have to be anywhere close to a master at the "shitty controls" to pull that off.

That's really interesting. I actually thought TR3 was easier than the original because you could collect save crystals and use them where you wanted to make a checkpoint. In the first TR the save crystals were in set spots and once you used them they disappeared. (This is all for the PS1 version; I think the PC versions let you save anywhere.)

I actually found TR4 the most frustrating because of the way puzzles were spread over multiple levels with load times in between, so I was tired of the series by the time I finally finished it. So I skipped Chronicles and Angel of Darkness, only coming back for Legend.

Whoever is interested, I'm uploading the Random Encounter videos here and the Hatoful Boyfriend playlist is here. My internet isn't the fastest so it will take a while to upload them all. I wish I would have thought about making a new account for this because of all the copyright notices I'm getting. Just hope my account doesn't get deleted.

Looks like Twitch has already started deleted its archives. Out of the 27 videos I've downloaded, 8 are missing parts. :/

ah see, I played on PC so this wasnt a problem. For me, TR3 just had such obtuse puzzles and loved instadeath traps. Also the levels were so abstract and hard to understand, I remember getting lost and turned around all the time (the shitty textures didnt help either, try understanding this screenshot: http://www.skribblerz.com/tr/atr3nstempleruins22.jpg)

of course I was also like 12 when I played them. I got them all on Steam and tried replaying them and I just can't do it. I have no idea how I even beat them, I'm pretty sure I actually printed out walkthroughs. I would love a HD re-release for them. Maybe once the steam controller comes out and people find good keybinding (especially if you could do macros so you could make her shuffle sideways quicker or something) I'll try again

TR1 & TR2 had what was essentially grid based movement if you didn't shuffle just right then the animation for run and jump wouldn't complete until you'd fallen off the end or you'd jump early and land short. IIRC running + jump = 2 block gaps and standing jump = 1 block gaps. There were a number of awful jumping puzzles like this in the game that required serious precision from the grossly imprecise controls, did hate.

I think the breaking brad feature showed us that no matter what challenge it is, he will overcome. Showing us that man is not burdened by limitations, and that man will win so long as they never give up.

I have faith in Mr. Shoemaker to see the challenge through! :) I was just commenting that what some of us might not see as intrinsically difficult, Brad finds a way.

Haha yeaaah all those 'long jump to slide down the ramp to turn around and jump right at the end or you die' puzzles

he beat Mile High Club in COD4 and also put Doom 2 out of its misery, both things i couldn't pull off myself.

When he puts his mind to it, he can really kill it. But then he'll pull off a brad and you wonder why one of the best anime editors ever could let you down so hard.

I've sent Vinny my initial question on Twitter. I imagine he'll respond when I gets a chance (or not, who knows?).

I take it you're half joking, but a lot of Vita's catalogue may be year old indie games at low res, but I for one have really got into the platform recently and would like to see it better represented on the site if that's a possibility.

I think they've said in the past that sometimes when developers come to show off their games they bring along their devkits and they can utilize that to capture footage.

So maybe these other sites are just borrowing devkits from visiting devs?

You'd think they could convince Drake to somehow procure them one of those kits.

Or Kessler. Threaten to make him eat more ghosts.

There should be a reaction cam feed in the corner of every quick look of Jason rubbing his face violently when the others are not paying attention to what's going on in the games.

I'm beginning to understand why Drew takes so many notes before digging into games. When you set him loose with no prep, bad things happen.

Danny's main shows are...

The Lobby (Chat Show)
Random Encounter (Quick Look Style Videos)
The Point (Opinion Piece)

You could delve into one of them

Secret of the Magic Crystals - Random Encounter is fun nonsense

The Lobby is usually okay, but depends on the guests. I'm not a huge fan of Chris Watters as a host, so I mostly stick to the episodes hosted by Danny.

Random Encounter is GS' version of Quick Looks. It's a bit hit and miss, again it depends on who's in the videos (as much as I like Danny, there's a reason why GB found out early that you need two or more people for your QLs). Now Playing is a similar feature, but as with the others, the quality varies widely.

The Point, Danny's weekly show about random topics, is good too.

Other than that I haven't really found much of interest on GS.

Good man.

Apparently their stream of PT is pretty good. Haven't watched it yet though.

Awesome. Seems The Lobby is something to at least check out amongst everything.

I hope we get a livestream of some sort today (or that we get whatever the guys were up to yesterday). Mario Party 2 sometime soon, please.
