Giant Bomb (and friends) GOTY 2010 Awards

I share the confusion over Jeff's dislike of RDR. It's nearly as good as GTA IV.

ME2 is a good winner, though. It's a shame Galaxy 2 wasn't in the discussion really.

I think Ryan was the one who played SMG2 and he didn't finish it.

Jeff's just a big sourpuss sometimes. I find that he grates on me more than the other three ever do. Ryan can be negative, but when he is I tend to agree with him (his "fuuuuuck you" when Heavy Rain was suggested for best story being the most recent). I strongly disagree with some of Brad's opinions, but whatever, he's usually into very different games than I am anyway.

But I find that Jeff can be downright nasty and oppressive at times. I haven't even played much RDR and I could tell he was being unfair. Hearing him talk about it just bummed me out. He seemed mad about it for seemingly no good reason. Especially since he loved GTAIV. It's pretty confusing.

He actually has a reason. I like RDR but the beginning of that game isnt good. Its a very slow burn. I can see someone playing the first few hours, hating how the horse controls and how travel works, and just giving up.

Yeah I tried replaying it for the second time yesterday but the controls and the way it "felt" stopped me from going further. I have completed the game though and I do know it gets amazing.

Plus, IIRC from some of the older Bombcasts, it didn't help that he had a "whatever could go wrong, went wrong" experience, as he seemed to be the only one in the Bombcast crew that experienced plenty of glitches at the worst possible moments. One in particular was a glitch where he encountered the "guy attacking girl" event, so he shot the guy, and received negative honor for it.

Wow currently making my way through Shadow Broker and nearing the end. Yeah it's pretty damn awesome. Though I agree with Brad that the combat starts to get really repetitive near the end. Basically fighting the same waves of enemies constantly. Still a lot of bang for your buck and an amazing local to make your way through! 200pts was a steal! :D

I actually like the beginning and the ending the most about Red Dead. The actually cowboying was what was interesting to me. The murder simulator in the middle was mostly a been there done that situation. Then again, that's probably also why I liked Heavy Rain so damn much. I enjoyed getting up, shaving and playing with the kids, dealing with being a single dad etc... You know, doing something that you normally wouldn't do in videogames. I wish there were more games that weren't necessarily about physical conflict.

edit: somehow forgot that I just made a post in this very thread. Should have just edited it into my previous post...

Agreed. They couldn't talk around what made a lot of these games great. I was very happy when Jeff told Brad to man up. If you don't want the spoilers, just read the lists. The discussions were much more interesting when they could talk about specifics.
Sometimes there isn't a warning though. I was lucky to have finished Red Dead, but in one podcast Vinny mentioned RDR for like a second and then dropped the ending the next...it's all good if you can work around the spoilers, but they aren't holding any reservation and aren't giving much warning. Spoiling the ending of RDR could be a serious offense to someone who hasn't finished it.

I'd say 200-400 points is about what it's worth. But then, I wasn't enthralled with many of the DLC add-ons this year. Most of the stuff I spent time with was cars in racers or maps in shooters. :D

I haven't gone through Shadow Broker yet but I absolutely loved Overlord.
Overlord was good, far better than that Kasumi crap, but Shadow Broker feels like they actually put in some significant work.

Well I'd agree that that's what dlc should be priced at. However when comparing Stolen Memory and Overlord to Shadow Broker, Shadow Broker is easily a far better bang for your buck at 200 points.

Many times though during the course of the podcasts it was made clear that spoilers would be necessary. It would be ridiculous for them to have to say "spoiler" every time they needed to talk about a specific story point.

I know I'm in the minority, but spoilers don't phase me. I just started Red Dead and know a great deal about the ending, but that's not stopping me from playing it. If I really was concerned though, I would have held off on listening to their deliberations till I was done with it.

Here's how it worked out because one person didn't play a specific game.

Ryan struck down Starcraft 2.
Jeff struck down Red Dead Redemption.
Brad struck down AC: Brotherhood.

Vinny was the only one who played all 3 of those I think. He's the real winner. ;)

"Shadow Broker"
This is why I find it so hard to take these media GOTY awards seriously.

I really don't feel like they gave Super Mario Galaxy 2 fair consideration at all, but that seems to happen with a lot of Wii games. They really just brushed it aside quickly, eliminating it because it was too iterative on its predecessor, which is a bad argument considering other games on that list. Also, Brad and Jeff didn't touch it. Sure, Ryan reviewed it, but he got barely more than half the stars (or you could argue only one-fourth if you count all 240) and judging by the video recap, seemed not very good at the game -- this might not be a fair point, but I really feel that the game clicks when you do more than just run and press the A button. And it's a Mario game; the "advanced" maneuvers really aren't that difficult. It also sounds like Vinny didn't play too much of the game either.

Well, I'm done ranting. I know it can be hard to take the Wii seriously anymore, but I would have at least expected the guys to play the newest installment in the main Mario franchise, especially considering it was almost universally revered when it was released. That being said, Ryan's entitled to his opinion. I just wish that the staff as a whole would've played it, considering I believe it to be easily the best 3D platformer ever.

Anyway, thanks Giant Bomb for all the great GOTY coverage. You guys still rock.

Finally done, excellent work all around fellas. The videos were top notch but I still think I preferred last year's podcast over this years. I loved how it came down to Batman vs Uncharted for an hour and this year the final debate seemed anti climatic

AND WHERE IN THE WORLD IS DAVE'S NOTE!!! WTF! Sure it wasn't a stalemate but I still need to know!

I played the Mass Effect 2 demo when it hit the PS3 and came away disappointed with the poor controls, atrocious UI, and too much uncanny valley going on. But their discussion and that final quick look pushed me over the edge so I'll pick it up in 2 weeks. I actually own the first one on the PC but never beat it but I think I'd rather have the PS3 version with all the DLC and that comic in one nice package.

Just finishing up the series of podcasts. I thought the "Take a Break" Award was a good one. As usual, Vinny delivered.

"How about Mafia?" - Vinny
"There's only been two of them." - Brad

:lol

Shadow Broker beats out all the other DLCs, prepare for awesome.

I dunno, I think I preferred the story in Overlord more,
when Shepard gets separated and the environment goes all Matrix-y
. The actual content in Shadow Broker is great though, with all the stuff on the consoles.

I paid 200 points for each, but I think I would've been super pissed if I paid $10 or $15 for the Kasumi DLC. But I guess that does get you a new character.

Well, Kasumi and Overlord we're $7 each so I didn't feel ripped off at all. Overlord felt like System Shock to me so it was interesting. Shadow Broker was awesome because of all the set pieces and I liked how they finally tied up a storyline from ME1. That was great.

Disgusting. Its not really that bad is it? Is 3 the one where the main character is running an orphanage?

it's not that bad. it played out like a political drama in that scene. i really liked it. some people have no patience.

The Giant Bomb GOTY picks so far have been more or less spot on, completely agree with Mass Effect 2 as GOTY, as it was my personal GOTY pick, with RDR and AssBro not far behind.

Love the deliberation podcasts as well, is very interesting to hear how the sausage gets made, even though I wish more of them had played more of the games. Some discussions (like the DLC one) only one had person had played game A and only another person had played game B, but with all the games they have to play for reviews, quick looks etc I understand that all of them playing every game on their lists would be a bit unrealistic. :P

Yeah, the story is an overcomplicated mess. I really liked what this guy had to say about the way the story is told, though: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=21202847&postcount=1590 :lol
MGS4 did this a lot as well, I loved that game but sweet Jeebus does Kojima need an editor to trim away all of the unnecessary expositionary dialog..

I don't have a problem with their picks, I'm just wondering how they narrowed it down to SC2 and Mass Effect 2 so quickly.

All four loved ME2.

SC2 because of Brad and Jeff with some bits of Vinny.

All of them loved ME2 and almost all of them loved SC2 as well. I'm glad that Jeff shot down Brad's e-sports argument about SC2 pretty quickly, if that is a factor in picking a game of the year Reach should've been higher up in the list due to MLG :P

Edit: Beaten, damn you LiK! :P

While I appreciate the abundance of podcast GOTY content GiantBomb is putting out, I can't see myself having the time to listen to over 8 hours of deliberation.

I just wish they would condense their content sometimes.

It's usually not that bad, but this scene sepcifically...yeah, it dragged on and on and on. The game kinda has to explain it that way, though, because all its main characters are fucking useless and walk the most complicated and absurd path in order to reach their goals. :lol It's silly and I actually appreciate the story for that, but it's not worthy of a Best Story mention.
And yes, 3 is the game with the orphanage, which is cute at first but ultimately hurts the games pacing quite a bit.

The content is condensed into the writeups for each winner on every day, as well as their personal top 10 videos. I've listened to each podcast the day it came out, that way it's only been an hour or two at a time, but I understand that listening to them all after the face may seem daunting, but personally for me it's well worth it.

I found out recently that all that weird repetition and needless interjections ("I see.") and back-and-forths in Japanese games are the product of an actual aspect of Japanese conversations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aizuchi

Suddenly Solid Snake, Ryo Hazuki, Phoenix Wright, and Kazuma Kiryu aren't simply idiots who are hard of hearing and slow to comprehension. I guess it's kinda hard to just trim it away since you still understand what they're actually saying, and some localization teams may not have free reign to start cutting out little lines like that even if they are annoying and questionable to a Western audience.

No way! I'm sitting here hoping Tuesday's cast goes up early tomorrow :D Can't wait to hear about Vinny's embarrassing Steam binge and what the rest of them were up to over break

No, right, I get that. It just seemed like they narrowed it down to the winner of the multiplatform GOTY and multiplayer GOTY really quick. It would have been nice to hear why the winners of Best Xbox 360, Best PS3, Best Wii game weren't good enough to make the list.

Happy to hear all the praise for Need for Speed though. :D

This is fucking awesome. I just noticed that two of the pictures I uploaded for ME2 were used by Zodiac Motherfucker and John Vignocchi in their Top 10 lists.

That isn't really the problem though. It's when someone starts explaining what FOXDIE is for 20 minutes. :lol
