Giant Bomb (and friends) GOTY 2010 Awards

It's weird, I'm bummed about Jeff's complete dismissal of RDR, but then I realize I'm being a bit of a hypocrite. He said in the podcast that he got a little ways into RDR, experienced a bit of what the game overall had to offer and then said "no thanks"; and as such has zero desire to go back and try to like it. Red Dead did get a bit of recognition in a couple of their other awards

The hypocrisy stems from the fact that that's exactly what happened with me and ME2 :lol I got just over six hours in and decided "Yeah, no." Personally I wished RDR would have won, and honestly would have been glad to see Starcraft 2 or AssCreedBro take it over ME2, but oh well.

Giant Bomb, first you choose Uncharted over Arkham Asylum, now ME2 over RDR, here's hoping this year will lead to me agreeing with their GOTY choice :D

I watched the runs, well one of the two.

You should find the time to play it, you'll change your mind. Because of the ending revelations, every bit of York dialogue actually becomes interesting as opposed to quirky. It becomes a much different experience and it's pretty rewarding.

I'm very torn on RDR as I'm finally just playing it. I'd call it a flawed masterpiece.

I really don't like the writing in it. It's very repetitive and it gets very grating by the 2nd mission. Also, some of the mission design is uninspired and there's a lot of little flaws that show themselves the further you get into the game.

Damn ME2 GOTY? Maybe I should play Mass Effect? Is it good?

Actually playing through the first again for the third time since my saves for both 1 and 2 got wiped out during my playthrough of 2. It's still a fantastic game.

I can't imagine why it'd be a different experience to seeing it. There's no chance I'm going to buy it. There is something strangely fun about the videos, it's like masochistic voyeurism, but without that abstraction there is no way I'd put up with it.

And I totally disagree it captures any of the quality of Twin Peaks, it's a cheap imitation, it's like an alien's interpretation of Twin Peaks, it feels like it's copied without any real sense of the building blocks used to construct it. Cooper has an unusual enthusiasm for coffee (although it's just taken from Lynch's own fascination with coffee), so they make York also a big fan of coffee. They copy random bizarre aspects of the show without understanding how they work to create the feeling of the show. Because Cooper talks to 'Diane' to display his internal thoughts, York talks to Zach.

Twin Peaks isn't the most cohesive piece of work as it is, the second season falls away greatly, but it's still immeasurably superior from what I could tall from watching the game.

Like Heavy Rain, I admire some of the decisions that went into DP, it's a very ambitious title, with lots of care given to areas you wouldn't expect. It really seems like it goes why beyond it's budget in that regard, but like Heavy Rain, it's horribly written and horribly acted. Maybe one day I'll get a copy, someone will have it and I'll give it a try, but I am fairly confident I'd hate it.

You should watch the Let's Play going on on Something Awful. It's trying to show every bit of the game, and the game actually has quite of bit of choices going on, with lots of chances to get to know individual characters and their relationships and secrets that neither ER team bothered to do since they were more concerned with powering through combat missions poorly.

EDIT: Which run did you watch? Because as excruciating as watching Brad play was, their run still discovered two very important aspects that Jeff and Vinny totally missed.

Bleh, ME2 winning another GOTY award. Whatever. I hope 2011 provides more worthy titles.

It's going to be Uncharted 3 vs Batman: Arkham City, yo!

How awesome or sad would that be? :O

In the spirit of debate I'm just going to tell you your opinion on DP isn't well-formed. If you like TP, you should play DP. If you have even a moderate amount of dexterity the game isn't hard to play.

Kind of a dumb argument that SC2 is good because some people, somewhere in the world, are playing that game in multiplayer extensively.

Glad ME2 won.

Massive understatements.

Jeff and Vinny's. I saw a little of both though.

Everything single second I saw of it was garbage, even if they narrowly avoided all the quality, and there's no way that's the case, I still wouldn't play it because of what I know is in there. It's not an issue of difficulty (although I do tend to suck at some games so it might be had I actually tried to play it), it's an issue of it appearing to be awful.

I know, it sounds meaningless right? And to me it is. Just because a "whole country" is playing that game "24/7" - does not make it better for me. I was bored by SC2 actually and the silly Blizzard eastereggs, that are kind of in your face, did not help.

You should really watch the SA videos then. It really shows how much attitude and style of play can affect your perception of a game.

One of the biggest differences is that even on Hard difficulty, the combat segments are far less painful when you actually take a hint and realize that the guns are meant to be weak as hell yet totally safe, when you can just walk around one-shotting zombies with melee weapons totally unscathed, in less than half the time it takes to just stand there blasting away with a pea shooter. Or that there's a fast travel mechanic. Or that there are infinite durability melee weapons that are actually pretty easy to find. In contrast, both ER runs stood five feet away from zombies pew-pewing with "Very Weak" guns and running right into their attacking arms.

Old phrase: don't knock it until you try it. If you can stomach Heavy Rain, then god knows you can 'suffer' through DP.

Anyhow, congrats to ME2. Great game.

It isn't just one country, people are playing it at all levels everywhere.
It isn't about how much they are playing, but at what level and why.

Still does not make that game better for me, but whatever.

Heavy Rain is like six hours long and requires no effort and there is no failing so there is no frustration to go with it. I can put up with almost anything for six passive hours. I actually played thru some of it more than once actually.

I'm not going to try it, but I respect your position on the subject, and don't want to derail the thread further.

The GB guys very rarely admit that an issue they have with a game is actually caused, or at least exacerbated by, their own failings and idiosyncrasies.

Can anyone give me a rough timestamp of any Assassin's Creed Brotherhood spoilers? That's the only game in the GotY discussion that I plan on playing later this year.

Agreed, if that was the thing, Super Street Fighter 4 would have also been a candidate, which kinda reminds me how Jeff didn't even mentioned the game in any category. Jeff, you suck!!!!!!

Anyways, expected GOTY. No complaints there. Despite that I hated how they removed the Mako and some other things, the game is still pretty solid.

They talk about how the ending is stupid (it is), but they don't really go into it other than a couple of flippant comments.

If you think you'd hate it from watching the Endurance Run, you probably will hate it. The ERs are what made me want the game. It just appealed to me in an unexpected way. It's not a game for everyone, or even most people. If you don't find the stilted animation and sometimes spotty voice acting amusing, but rather think it hinders the experience, you're probably not the kind of person it would appeal to.

You can't take it too seriously or be too critical of it or the whole experience falls apart. If you don't enjoy, say, watching b movies to laugh at how stupid or absurd they are, you won't understand why there are fans for this game at all. It will just look like a bad game to you. If you don't find the characters funny or quirky now, you probably never will. That's the love it or hate it nature of the game.

And I had no expectations going into it, so when things got interesting I was pleasantly surprised. Whereas, for sake of comparison, with Heavy Rain it was hyped to the moon and back as a killer app for the PS3 and "an adult story" and to some is still regarded as a masterwork. So when the plot started to buckle under its own weight, I could only be disappointed. So expectation has a lot to do with my admiration.

Anyway I didn't intend to write anywhere near that much and apologize to anyone that's sick of hearing about this admittedly mostly clunky game. Sorry if I derail things any.

Guess I was right, Ryan shot down Starcraft 2 as GOTY winner. Surprised he never even played the first game. Mass Effect 2 was the right decision.

I am so tired of Jeff's trolling Limbo and RDR. He didn't even fucking finish them. I'm halfway done with Giant Bomb, on the whole. Or at least their podcasts.

Why finish a game that you hate playing?

So all you are saying is you are tired of GB and are not going to listen to it anymore - thats like your own criticism you just posted - Don´t listen/play/do anything you don´t like?

Also cheers for all the cool content GB crew.

Not my personal top, but number 2. Respect no less. Great choice and incredible gaming experience.

You'll stop listening to a podcast just because one person on it doesn't like the same games you like?

He didn't play FFXII or FFXIII at all, and probably played very little of FFX if any, but he still ranted for the best part of 10 minutes about how Final Fantasy was the one series in the videogame world that most needs to take a break.

So his trolling of Limbo and RDR was very mild by comparison. At least his views on those games are based on more than conjecture, things other people have told him, and stuff he made up in his own head.

Fun podcasts to listen to but oh man are their and my tastes very different, barely any of the games on my list even made it to their nominations :( Yet this stuff has easily been the most entertaining GOTY podcasts I've heard so far, there's at least some differing opinions and most importantly an urge to actually discuss for and against the games in depth (even though some arguments were really dumb like Jeffs SMB=Limbo) unlike the very poor Weekend Confirm GOTY episode.

And Mass Effect 2 was an expected GOTY and I can totally see why they choose despite not agreeing with them. Overall, thanks to the Bombcast crew for all this content and looking forward to hanging around on the site during the next year :-)
