Giant Bomb (and friends) GOTY 2010 Awards

holy fuck, they do that on purpose, and they consider it proper?! worst language in the world.

I always figured it had to be a cultural thing. It doesn't make sense that the exact same problem exists in almost every example of Japanese writing in media. Anime, videogames, they all have the same problems with winding their way around a point for 20 minutes instead of just fucking saying it and moving on.

Don't mistake poor writing for the language. Otherwise, you'd have to argue that Inception is a Japanese film.

No, I'm not talking about poor writing. I'm just saying that in almost every piece of Japanese media I've consumed, the characters go on these long soliloquies that could be summed up rather easily and more effectively in a couple sentences.

And Inception had pretty decent writing for as many ideas as the movie crammed into 2 and a half hours. :lol

Any scene involving Ellen Page in that movie could have come straight out of a Japanese video game cutscene. "Stand here for 20 minutes while I tell you about dreams".

It's a problem with science fiction/fantasy, not with the language or the culture. No one goes into long winded explanations about the nature of life in K-On!! for example. :lol

How is conversational courtesy connected to the language? It's a culturel thing and just something the Japanese do.

I really don't want to see what you consider a good written film then.

I don't want to confuse "bad writing" with "lots of exposition", of course. Documentaries, for instance, are essentially all exposition in one form or another.

That said, I think you can do science fiction without having people explain shit to each other - or if people do explain shit to each other, it's done so in a way that you can easily forgive it.

Having just watched Back to the Future recently - there's no 20 minute explanation about the Flux Capacitor. You need 1.22 gigawatts and have to drive at 88 mph to travel through time and that's all that matters.

And even then, the one time they deal with the consequences of time travel is when Marty tries to give Doc the letter warning him of the Libyans and its a scene that lasts maybe a minute?

It's very easy to waste a lot of words when writing science fiction - it's compounded in video games because there's no time limit to the cutscenes that they use.

No, Paprika > Inception. :p

K-On!! was the only thing that came to mind, but you could say the same about a lot of anime not based on piloting robots or whatever though.

If anything, that proves my point because the numbers don't even matter. :lol

RE: Brads' repeated argument about ME2s ending:

I'm not going to start reading shit about what goes on "behind the hood" of the game because I have a significant interest in replaying it again someday, but what the fuck does he expect Bioware to do? Does he want an entirely random load of shit? How fucking lame would that be? Obviously there has to some kind of control or else the game would completely fall apart on itself at the end. I'm honestly at a complete loss as to what he is expecting here.

If you listen to the podcast they sort of call him out on that and he explains his position which is basically the under the hood stuff that exists in ME2 is shit.

Only have made it through day 2 of the podcasts. The Minerva's Den vs Shadow Broker convo was cringeworthy. Any episodes of the GOTY bombcasts stick out as especially enjoyable, or should I just skip them and proceed with my regularly scheduled programming?

You're not missing out much by skipping them. I didn't find their discussions (debates?) to be really interesting or fun. It was mostly just each of them defending their position with any arguments they could think of, however weak they were.

I'm in exactly the same boat.

I'd rather listen to a compilation of all the Nintendo Download segments from 2010 than listen to an hour of Minerva vs Shadow Broker ever again.

Jeff trolling Limbo and constantly saying "VvvvvvVVVvvvv" was enjoyable to listen to every time.

i love that he was intentionally trolling Limbo just to get a rise outta Brad and it worked every time. hehe

They need to start earlier and spread their recording out more next year. You could tell in spots that they were tired and miserable and stopped caring.

My advice for the GB crew would be to meet quarterly to discuss any serious GOTY contenders that have been released thus far. Hopefully that would make them all at least attempt to play all these games. I don't know, it's just a bummer to hear that only 50% played certain things that the other 50% are gung-ho on placing in the number one spot. This year it just seemed like this was a problem more often than last.

Wow, I'm about done the Day 1 podcast now and I don't think I'll bother with the other days. I think my main issue with it is that a lot of games aren't given a fair chance purely because a bunch of the crew members haven't even played them, and a lot of what said crew members are saying is just flat out wrong. This is particularly obvious with Jeff and Red Dead; the John Marston hate from Jeff was baffling, and him saying stuff about how Red Dead isn't about the characters is just silly. I don't really see how you can add to a conversation when you haven't even played the game.
Also, Jeff's hatred of Limbo really rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, he's entitled to his opinions, but damn was he desperately searching for things to nitpick. Kudos to Brad for backing up Marston/Meat Boy/Limbo, dude has good taste. The whole podcast sort of seemed like Jeff was playing devil's advocate, while Brand and Ryan were the voices of reason. Vinny unfortunately was pretty passive throughout the whole thing.
