Posts like this make me embarrassed to be a Shenmue fan. Jesus. With proper time-management you don't have to wait (that is, stand still). The Asia Travel Company told you that you have to come back at a certain time. What do you do until then? Here's a possible routine:
(a lot of other activities have been omitted)
- Have conversations with people at the town and ask them what they think about that travel agency; most of them will share with you some anecdotes about their experience with it and/or the bad rumours they have heard about it.
- Buy food and go feed the kitty, which you/Ryo care about (it will recover faster, and you'll be happy to see it getting well).
- Go buy scroll moves from the Bunkado Antique shop. Open them to learn new moves.
- Go to a park/parking-lot to train and advance your (new) moves.
- Go to the You Arcade to have fun by playing a game of your choice.
- Finally, around 19:45, go home; Save the game, and then Sleep (you can sleep after 20:00).
The time will fly by as you patiently immerse-yourself/invest-your-attention in this world.
These things are not interesting? Then stop playing this game; it's not for you. It's based on real-world-standards and it's a new/different kind of entertainment for certain people (but certainly not few).

I'm not sure why that post makes you feel embarrassed (as a Shenmue fan).
- Was it because of the first quote from Yu Suzuki himself? [Source: http://shenmuedojo.net/new/extras/interview1114.html]
- Was it because of the second quote from the video titled as "Yu Suzuki: Project Berkley"? [Source: https://youtu.be/Tu86tlnFLVE?t=30m18s]
- Was it because of the third or fourth quote from the video titled as "Dreamcast Magazine Shenmue Trailer"? [Source: https://youtu.be/cf-MK4599A8?t=5m25s and https://youtu.be/cf-MK4599A8?t=24s]
Maybe the following quote is going to embarrass you, too: "Then, one question started to grow among the staffs: Is this really a game?" [Source: "GDC 2000: Yu Suzuki Shenmue Presentation" - https://youtu.be/DzEt6yZPVcY?t=18m19s]

The lack of self awareness really is something.
"Here are four quotes I have ready at any moment to support this statement that nobody but me cares about and really is not an important issue at all".
Imagine what you could do with this effort in like actual important issues!
I honestly think the idea behind Shenmue is super interesting. But I don't think it makes the most of this idea from what I've seen.
I'm just bummed out by the fact people keep saying a game that gives you perfect versions of Hang-On and Space Harrier has no interesting side content.

It does. Please either play Shenmue on your own or watch the GameInformer super replay as a more representative play-through. (link)
Watch that run and its night and day. You're just not gonna see the most from this game in this run. From one emo-gaffer to another. It brings those suburban mopes.

If I find a way to play it I would totally be interested in it. I've been a little harsh to the game in this thread but I've turned a bit around. At least enough to be interested.
I still think altought what it's accomplished here in 99 is super impressive but I wonder what could be done today with more advanced AI routines, maybe a different story (not the biggest fan of that aspect so far) and a more expansive (if still compact) world.
The idea of "live in this tiny village and discover all this stories and interactions" is definitely a very interesting one.
I still think this version of the concept has some big flaws, some maybe limitations of its time but I'm at a point where I would try it if I find an easy enough way to do it (I am not buying a dreamcast people!).
Fanatatics*This thread has taught me that the biggest thing I missed out on, having not gotten into Shenmue, was interacting with its fans.
Nah, the charm is in the jank.Watch them finish the Endurance Run and then Sega suddenly announces Shenmue I+II HD with modern controls and help systems and rerecorded VO
Rerecording VO for a game with an extremely passionate fan base is:Watch them finish the Endurance Run and then Sega suddenly announces Shenmue I+II HD with modern controls and help systems and rerecorded VO
Every fanbase has awful fans who are an embarrassing minority. It's why every OT thread becomes unbearable a few weeka after launch because it's an echo chamber of nutters who love something unreservedly.
Every franchise is the same. Zelda, Souls, Halo, Resident Evil... at a certain point once discussion starts to get so specific you always get the nutters hanging around who ruin it for everyone.
Most people I know who like Shenmue as much as I do accept it for what it is, a quirky adventure game.

Ahhh...I know that the way things worked out they had to 'waste' a day, but two things.
Firstly, this video made me realise how well this game evokes an ACTUAL role play. These guys FELT that frustration. Ryo, meh, he is a blank canvas, but damn, these guys were frustrated to hell, and that was funnier to watch, than a scripted amination of Ryo getting pissed.
Secondly, there is stuff to find and explore, I mean the moment that they left the room they triggered a cut scene, things are just not obvious in the game.
