After seeing Drew's reaction to the game so far, I think I can predict that MGS4 will be his favorite game of the series just for how much better its controls are. They are "modern" and without frustration.
I feel like people said that about MGS3, too.

curious if MGS4 will end up more smoothly gameplay wise. Drew can play shooters... or at least he can do halo. You can do MGS4 as a shooter pretty easy.

They said that about the game mainly because of its setting and story. The camera is better, yes, but the rest of the controls are still very "Metal Gear-y". MGS4 was the first game to truly embrace modern western controls, and I'm sure Drew will feel right at home with it.

Homeworld quick look is rough, Brad thinks you're stuck on one plane(the verticality is one of the things that makes Homeworld so unique) and he just uses the classic throw all enemies at thing approach. Play the tutorial! Still, he said he was having fun.

Didn't he say in the beginning that you could go vertical (which he learned in the tutorial), but that he hadn't seen much use for it yet at that point?

God, I'm so tired I can't sleep.

edit: Throw all enemies at thing has always been my strategy when playing that series, which is probably why I'm so fucking terrible at it.

Drink Myggen!!

Doesn't feel like a bad idea at this point.

Except for the camera in the subsistance version, the controls are probably the worst of the franchise in MGS3. So many overly complicated crap to do all the time...ugh.

I thought there was a bit where he said you only played on one plane. I got three hours of sleep, so maybe I imagined that :p

And yeah, that will get you wrecked past the first few missions. Really have to get used to having proper units to counter enemy attacks. At a certain point you have to start using the different planes as the enemy will be attacking you from the top and bottom. One fun thing to do is to send a big attack force straight on and then send in a fleet of salvage corvettes in from underneath while the enemy is distracted.

Game gets crazy later on, especially with the scaling. If you have 100 ships you can bet the enemy has that and more. I remember Homeworld 2 bringing my at the time weak pc to its knees.

Also, Cities: Skylines look crazy good. Hotline Miami 2 looks a bit too much like Hotline Miami, but I guess that's to be expected and I'm down for that. The soundtrack sounds really good, but that's not exactly a surprise.

Ah, fuck if I know, I'm on probably less sleep than you. The walking dead. At least I got to take tomorrow off after being in court for four days straight. Might've been something later in the QL, but I swear he talked about that stuff at around 2-3 minutes into the QL.

Is Depth of Field the new Lens Flare? Pretty prevalent in both of today's quicklooks. Not that Homeworld and Cities don't look great, I hope I can toggle it off.

The only time I don't enjoy MGScanlon is when Drew gets upset or frustrated because he thinks he's playing incorrectly/badly. As Jason said, it isn't Metal Gear Solid, it's Metal Gear Scanlon.

PS lol you're all crazy MGS3 is the best game ever.

Depth of field actually looks good so no. And it can be toggled off in Homeworld, not sure about Cities. It seems to be replicating the same miniature effect the most recent Sim City offered so I imagine it can.

I think I'll buy Hotline Miami 2 OST over the game.

Either way, you're paying the same price. The deluxe edition doesn't come with the soundtrack, either, so if you want the game and the soundtrack, it's at least $30.

The first game just had all of the game's songs as Ogg Vorbis files in the main folder, so hopefully the sequel does the same.

Hotline Miami 2 is a cool but different game from the first. Less about GOGOGO and more methodical. I agree it's not as "pure" as the the first in that regard but I enjoyed my time with it immensely and am working my way through hard mode right now.

Now regarding Metal Gear Scanlon...

Everything I see just reminds me of how I wish this series played better (and why I am, for once, interested in a Metal Gear game release). MGS3, specifically, has a ton of cool detail and complexity and depth to its mechanics and how all of its systems interact. It's a shame it just controls like garbage, feels clunky and unresponsive, and demands you be slow and methodical with your inputs in situations where you have to be quick and instinctive. The game isn't built for firefights, but I wish it would still function when you are in one.

Yes with enough practice and mindfulness, you can make it do what you want it to do, but I don't think that excuses how stupidly clunky the whole thing is. The game is really cool and mystifying for me. Every time I see it I get this itch to play it but then I remember that it just isn't super fun to control or play in the moment to moment stuff. Hopefully Phantom Pain will be amazing.

yea, i might just wait for the game to go on sale. first game never really grabbed me. but man, the soundtrack is baller as fuck.

bish gets all the credit :)
I just played MGS3 for the first time since it released and had no issues with the controls. Playing it weeks apart is probably a bad idea though.

I never found Hotline Miami 1 to be a frantic game. It was always about very short, carefully planned explosions of action. That said I think I got enough of it the first time so the soundtrack is plenty for me too.

Yeah, I personally never had any issues with the original and the HD collection version is even better. Not nearly as difficult to get into as it may seem in the MGScanlon videos.

Cities Skylines really looks fantastic. It has lots of cool little additions to the genre that make it seem like a lot of fun. That QL totally sold me.

Time to move it up a couple dozen spots in my wishlist.

So I'm listening to the Idle Thumbs podcast and Cara Ellison is on it. I finding her to be a super cool individual but I can't see her being a good fit with Giant Bomb. Am I missing something or is she actually really tight with the Bomb crew?

the cool thing about not really caring about cara ellison is that you won't be bummed if whoever they're hiring isn't her

well, that and you don't embarrass yourself at giant bomb pax panels

I think she would fit in very well in the NY office, less so in the SF office.

Agreed, she'd be perfect in NY. She could play the wacky person alongside Alex and be the straight person to Vinny. In SF, the chance to see her worldliness go up against Dan's profound lack thereof would be fun, but she'd do a lot more good in NY.

I'm about 15 minutes into the latest MGS and I think I'm about to end my life.
DSP and Drew are one
It's making me think that I take for granted how easy I have it with the controls in some games and that others may have a radically different experience. Or knowing what tools are available to you and how to utilize them.

The best part about the whole playthrough is that Drew hasn't used the Fake death pill yet. Meaning the Sorrow will be night impossible since he doesn't recognize the moment to use the revival pill.

I loved the newest Metal Gear Scanlon! Let's see what GAF had to say. *reads the last three pages while crying*

Also, Cara is my number one choice. I think she'd be great, especially out with the New York crew.

I never used the Fake Death Pill either. Fake Death is for losers. Actually I just always forget that the Fake Death Pill is a thing and prefer to just shoot guards until the screaming stops. Of course this led me to being stuck at the end of The Sorrow fight and I had to look a FAQ.
