Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

This year's method of selecting the top 10 was too mild. I want the brutality of cutting games, not adding them.

Lack of Brad filibuster was also disappointing. The potential was there but maybe he sensed Jeff would never back down.

Nobody is saying Doom is a bad game for having a bad multiplayer mode. That was not in any way the argument. The argument was that having a weak multiplayer mode in a sequel to a series that became a sensation in large part due to it's multiplayer is a disappointment and it's entirely reasonable to count that against the game. If Half-Life 3 came out with the greatest multiplayer of the generation and a weak campaign people would certainly be angry, and justifiably so. What a franchise is known for is hugely important to how it is judged.
Doom's MP had very little to do with the success of the game. Most people didn't have any access to that part of it. Doom blew up through people distributing the shareware version on floppies. Only people working in IT had the means to play it online and/or in an office LAN.

Damn. I read the results before listening to the podcast. I was hoping we were going to hear Brad break down for Doom not reaching number 1

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Splitting Giant Bomb into west and east was a really smart decision, I feel like Vinny's voice gets lost (out of his own politeness) during these big group discussions. The GOTY podcasts also made me release how much they need another Patrick or Austin to draw out deeper discussion; a lot of this year's deliberations fell back on "this game is good just because" reasoning

Here's hoping they aim for a more diverse giant bomb team for 2017 (Female staff member please!!!!) .
I definitely notice when types like Patrick or Austin aren't there, they definitely filled in a lot of blind spots in the crew. I'll never like another game site the same way I do with GB, but it's also a regular occurrence with games I like for Jeff to point out he "never wants to play that", or for the guys to all have nothing in common with. Which I'm cool with, since I like them all so much, I just like the roles P&A tended to serve.

I loooved doon as a kid and so did everybody else and i had no idea it even had MP.

Listening to the whole thing, and last year, I find Alex to be intolerable to listen to. Same comments over and over, hogs the mic, etc. Kind of bummed me out.

You're welcome to think that, and I'm an Alex fan/apologist so maybe I'm biased, but I personally thought he was the super tolerant of other people's views, very good at saying his piece but letting go when he knew he wasn't going to get his way - generally I thought he was a boss this week. I even saw a lot of comments here saying he was the MVP this week, which I was surprised because there's often a lot of low-level-but-persistent hate thrown his way. But anyway, sorry you were bummed out by him I hope you still dug the week's content from the others.

He doesn't hog the mic, if Alex didn't speak it would the Jeff and Brad show.
That wouldn't be a problem for me. But we would have heard more Vinny, Dan, and Jeff if Alex weren't hogging the mic to say "it won't hang but I just wanted to give this thing way too much time of discussion...", Disrupting the flow every day in every category multiple times. Opinions though, clearly some people enjoy his contribution. I find him nails on chalkboard.

I've always completely disagreed with the concept of having to judge a game by its complete package. The idea of discounting DOOM and GTA V because their multiplayer modes aren't great is such a weird thing to me. Why do optional extras make a game worse? Would they be scored better if the optional content wasn't there?

Two of the three options on a games main menu isn't "optional content"
The argument isn't that the games are worse because of the multiplayer. It's that other games don't come with that conceit.

Sure it is. It's a fantastic single player game with some multiplayer modes tacked on.
From the discussions it feels like Doom would have won had the multiplayer not been included, which has literally no impact on the campaign.

It doesn't seem like that at all since the people pulling for Doom were not moved by that argument at all. It wasn't until good points of Hitman being brought up again that it got the number 1 spot.

Finished with all 5 podcasts this year, I enjoyed it as usual, even though I haven't actually played any of the games that made their top 10. I would like for them to shake things up for next year, some more oddball categories. Also, it was mentioned in one of the podcasts, but they have categories for story, multiplayer, music, but don't have a pure gameplay/mechanics category.

Yeah, Brad repeatedly said he would rather hear about the good points of Hitman than about how the bit of Doom he didn't care about was crap as they were more persuasive arguments.
It's odd, because exactly the same thing happened with GTA a couple of years ago. That game was even more unusual, because it launched without multiplayer and was still marked down for it.

Until Dawn Rush of Blood being brought up in the worst game category is of the oddest things I have heard over the several years of listening to the deliberations. The game is fantastic and that category is typically reserved for busted trash.

Yeah totally. I was spoiled early on the fact that Hitman won and I was actually a little surprised that it topped DOOM, but after hearing some of the reasoning it made perfect sense. I think that marks against it for its poor MP (which in all honesty I don't mind is just not at fun as other stuff) is not a good argument for why it should take a back seat. That campaign is makes up for any MP or Snapmap has and then some.

And it's still my GotY. As a massive fan of the original games I never thought I'd see the series be anything more than a cheap nostalgia grab.

It's hard to complain, it's been such a good year for games.

I agree. Best thing about these podcasts was forcing people to criticize games that have usually get nothing but praise. I think most of us are smart enough to know that any game that gets discussed is one of the best of the year and they are mostly nitpicking them for this special situation.

People talk about how good the good games are all year round. Do we really need to rehash those same comments again?

I remember when Brad brought up a nicer method during GOTY 2013 or something because he didn't want to cut games and be so negative but Ryan jumped in and said "NO, let's cut some games" or something like that.

I want them to be negative. They're Giant Bomb. Cut or be cut know what I'm saying.

I missed the brutality too, but Brad and co. made a good case for why they made the change. It's counterintuitive for a show that is principally about celebrating the greatest games of the year to devolve into a bunch of petty nitpicking. Some of the conversations in the past years were brutal. They struck a smart balance between criticism and praise this year, I think.

EDIT: Goddamn I miss Ryan

I think it's probably a self defense method because everyone else knows they can never be as mean and negative as Cutmaster Jazzy Jeff

Masters of Doom portrays the multiplayer as being a large reason why Doom 2 became such a phenomenon. The first Doom a bit less so because it only had lan multiplayer i believe?

What? Doom 1 and 2 were both lan/college things. Quake was what brought internet multiplayer to the average person (in terms of FPS). Compared to today it's incredibly arcane to get going in a match even, but compared to what came before (loading up Kali and shit) it was downright nintendo level accessible. Doom 2 came out like the same year as 28.8 baud modems, even Quake was like barely playable for those not on workplace/college internet, 33.6 was around by then though. I'd be stoked to have under 300 ping. That was like 'hey I can shoot people and hit them' territory.

i guess FPS campaigns just don't do it for me anymore. i played through doom and titanfall 2 and i thought they were good but hardly standouts as gotys

the lack of great shooter campaigns in the last decade is what makes decent ones like Doom and TF2 stand out. just think about how many great character action, stealth and puzzles games come out every year

I thought this year overall was better than last year, thought that probably stems from me not liking Austin that much. The 'Best Game' category was way to mild though, i want to hear them draw blood! Should be fixed for GOTY 2017 however with the release of Destiny 2.

Huh. I'm playing Doom for the first time, am halfway through (I'd guess) and I can't come to terms still with how amazing it is, in gameplay, graphics and story. Doom. On console.

I still can't even. I pretty much loathed FPS since, well, the Doom/Quake days were over, and I never believed this to be good. Only bought it due to GB opinions on the podcasts.
