Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Pretty weak Best Game discussion this year. Top 10 barely moved, once it was in place. I feel like they buckled to Alex and Jason over Thumper and Hyperlight Drifter just so that they could move on.

I feel like Alex has the wrong mindset, he seems to only care about something he likes getting recognition rather than trying to build the best list. Thumper did not derserve to be on the top 10. They have their own personal lists for that reason.

Jeff had some weird vendetta against DOOM not winning for some reason despite praising it all year and never really seeming to care about the half baked multiplayer until now.

It all came together too smoothly this year, super tame and not all that interesting by the end.

I was surprised at how Jeff sort of went after DOOM like that cause I think everyone knew his argument was sort of bullshit. I was for Mario Maker winning last year and I was glad it did but I felt like the same was said about Mario Maker as a complete package and how bad the in game Tools for sharing and finding levels were but somehow it mattered more this year. DOOM should have been their GOTY cause I like it more than Hitman

I mean it's their goty, not yours.

Im not sure how this is relevant to what I'm saying and I think that goes without saying. Should we just not comment because it's their GOTY and not ours?

Yeah it was weird. He seemed a bit pissy after realising that Titanfall 2 wasn't going near the top 3. They used the argument that DOOM was not a complete package because of the MP/Snapmap not being great but didn't level that against Hitmans custom hit creator which I'm pretty sure no one even touched.

The DOOM campaign was incredibly polished, funny and awesome to play whereas Hitman seems funny and awesome to play but not as polished.

How The Witness did not win "Best Looking Game" is fucking beyond me.

Oh for sure. The Witness is exquisite like almost no other game is. Inside is fantastic looking and striking, but I don't see how it matches the standard of The Witness.

That all said, I'm glad they didn't pick UC4, even if it was a runner up. Maybe it's my beefy PC skewing how I view things but I was never that impressed with UC4. Sure it looks great but it really doesn't impress in certain other ways.

Yeah, Jeff's argument falls apart after two seconds of thinking about it. Everyone else kind of tried to articulate why but I think they were mostly just too taken aback to really fight him. And he dug his heels in really fucking hard about it, suggesting the site just can't give it the top spot out of principle. Yet he wasn't even aware of how half baked a lot of the extra modes in Hitman are...

Probably because you said you thought DOOM should be GOTY instead of Hitman because you liked it better.

He actually explained the reasons why in his post. Don't do this.

DOOM should have been their GOTY cause I like it more than Hitman

He literally says it should be THEIR game of the year because HE likes it more. What shouldn't I do? I'm legitimately confused because I keep seeing your posts here talking about how Jeff is caustic to these discussions because you don't like how he argues for various games. Seriously, your reply to me is the first one of your posts in this thread that doesn't contain "Jeff".

So what shouldn't I do?

He outlined why he believes it should be their GOTY in everything he wrote that you selectively cut out since you're trying to pick a fight. And now I guess you're triggered by me criticizing Jeff's arguments. Anything else you'd like to thought police?

After finishing Doom, I just started up Wolfenstein: The New Order for the first time. I'm only on the second chapter, but 2014 was considered a down year for GOTY. How did this not make the Giant Bomb top-10 list!? Looking back, it was Drew's favorite and Alex's 10th favorite. Wow. It's early, but I feel like I'm enjoying it more than I did Doom (and I LOVED Doom). The transition from game to cutscene is a fairly janky, though. I wish that were more polished.

... what part of that comment "outlines" why it should have been their GOTY aside from his opinion. I "selectively" cut out a full sentence where the start and the end of it was that their game of the year should have been something different because he liked it better. I don't have words for how confused I am by your argument.

Am I triggered? No, not really. I'm still completely blown away by how personally people take a list that comes from a group of people and act like it affects them because their choices weren't the same. You've managed to take personal offense to Jeff's choices and I just don't understand it. I disagreed a ton with the list, just like I have for years but that's why it is Giant Bomb's GOTY list and not Xeteh's GOTY list.

No one is taking anything personally here, we're discussing a GOTY list after all. This thread is for talking about the deliberations not attacking other forum users over their opinion.

He thinks Jeff's argument was bullshit. He's allowed to have that opinion, and the reasons why people think Jeff's argument was bullshit regarding Doom have been covered by me and others already.

And criticism does not = taking things personally. You should learn that. The only person acting personally insulted by something is you with these direct attacks, I think Jeff is an amazing critic but that doesn't mean I always agree with him or think he makes sense.

Masters of Doom portrays the multiplayer as being a large reason why Doom 2 became such a phenomenon. The first Doom a bit less so because it only had lan multiplayer i believe?

True, but OG Doom's MP was still very popular, not to mention historically significant. The term "deathmatch" (disputedly) comes from OG Doom. Regardless, people trying to handwave 2016's multiplayer issues as irrelevant to reviews are being absurd.

Doom's multiplayer was important, but it was not as important as it's single player. The multiplayer planted a seed that they continued to grow into Doom II and then it blossomed with Quake, but if the original Doom
didn't have multiplayer it still would have been the revelation it was due to its single player. Doom and multiplayer don't go hand in hand the way that quake or call of duty does. It was there for the very, very dedicated players, but it's not what people think of when they think Doom.

Judging the new Doom on its single player alone is totally valid, both on its own merits and in the larger context of the legacy of Doom.

Well I think HITMAN should have been their GOTY because I like it more than DOOM.

Oh wait it is their GOTY. I win.

Yeah high five!

I couldn't tell you which one's better and neither of them are my personal game of the year, but I'm just happy for Hitman. Hitman!

When Brad was commenting during best game, "isn't it weird that Dark Souls 3 hasn't been bought up at any point before now in these deliberations", or something along those lines. It got me thinking, did they say the words "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" once during the 5 days?

The multiplayer in Doom is worse than the level-finding tools in Super Mario Maker.

It is not hypocritical to think one is an issue and the other isn't.

Does anyone at Giant Bomb realize Hearts of Stone came out in 2015, and that this year's DLC for TW3 is Blood and Wine? Anyone? Perhaps the people that quick looked it this year?

I mean, both are issues.

It's just that one is about the ability to find content not being as easy as it could be.

The other is just bad content.

Both games came up. Jeff mentioned Deus EX MD in talking about how he is a big fan of the series but thought MD was nothing special. Also everyone hates Jensen's voice. Vin and Brad talked about DS3 but quickly dismissed it as more Souls and that those games are coming out too frequently now. Personally I don't agree with either opinion but I get it.

Another year, another GiantBomb GOTY thread where people get way too emotionally invested in the results.

Or just people making reasonable criticisms. There's nothing emotional about it.

They're big boys, they can handle people on a forum saying they are wrong. Every opinion is wrong to someone.

2017 looks to be the first soul-less year since DS2 came out.

We'll see how people feel next time.

That tend to like games that have fun with their premise and TNO is all grimdark. It's a damn good game but I can see how they weren't into it.

snapmap however gets a bad rap

Yeah Snapmap gets lumped into being bad when people say "The campaign is great but everything else sucks". It's a shame really because snapmap is incredibly powerful. Its probably the best console map creator ever made.

Consoles get a creator like that about once in a generation.

I may not be entirely onboard with the reasoning, but I'm still surprised delighted enough that Hitman won it that I'm thoroughly fine with how it all went down.

Hearing Jeff and Brad square off on Doom and Hitman with Brad on Doom's side and Jeff on Hitman's was the biggest reversal of expectations that I have ever had with these discussions.

Comparing these two is kinda odd and besides, the bad stuff of Mario Maker makes it more difficult to get to the good stuff while the bad stuff of DOOM is completely irrelevant to the good stuff.

Anyway, I'm glad my campaign #DOOMnoGOTY worked so well.
My next project will be to make sharing Waluigi pictures ilelgal.

You can circumvent the level-finding problems with fan communities. It is a flaw, but it can be moved around. You can't do anything to make the DOOM multiplayer less shitty.
You can just not engage with the Doom multiplayer and play the fantastic single player and underrated snap map instead.

With mario maker you cant make use of one of its larger appeals without going through loopholes or using external devices.

I don't see how you look at those two things and think that Doom is worse

People can say "just don't play the multiplayer" but that doesn't take back all the time Jeff (or I) spent with the multiplayer trying to like it and thinking it was completely terrible. Or all the time I spent trying the top rated snapmaps and thinking they were all trash. I can't not think of that time with DOOM when I'm evaluating it and I imagine Jeff feels the same.

After finishing all 5 days of deliberations i'm okay with most of their awards, except 1.

How The Witness did not win "Best Looking Game" is fucking beyond me.

First that game's art style is damned gorgeous. It's not hyper realistic and not cell shaded, but a beautiful blend of the two. It's extremely varied with a number of different areas having a unique atmosphere with each one. The lighting was beautiful and their use reflections in the water was top tier.

Finally and the most important. This was the only game where the way the game looked directly impacted how you play the game. I won't go into details but if you watched their discussion on "Best Moment" you know what i'm talking about. Even forgoing that though, using the environment to solve some of those puzzles had to be done in such a way that doesn't make it obvious how to arrive at the solution but at the same time not completely esoteric.

Add to that the multiple "point of view" puzzles coupled with beautiful art and I think they done fucked up. I was shocked that nobody even fought for it. Like what in the hell?

4owHI9X.jpg

COME ON SON!
They eliminated it from Best Style way too quickly. I think you could make a very good case on how there's interplay between the look, effects, layout of the island and even sound and how all of that becomes part of the gameplay. That would all be part of style, but they never even brought that up. I can see how it doesn't hang just based on look, but yeah, that was disappointing.

Does anyone in here have a pro? I really feel like they are being overly dramatic about the "lack of communication in the pro versions of games." Don't you just go to the game menu and select "performance/60fps" mode or whatever else you like?

They absolutely have overblown it, Brad in particular. Games vary, most just play in Pro mode with no setings to be messed with, a few have have options like higher framerate vs. 4K with lower framerate. There where like 3-4 games that ran worse that got patched within a couple weeks. Its about ad simple and straight forward as it can get, for better or worse but its in no way as confusing and weird as they made it out to be.

No, not at all. Most games don't have any options to choose from and when they get Pro support the patch notes just say "Pro support added". Some games do have options, like The Witness or Tomb Raider, and you can change things and that's great but most stuff with Pro support just has it with no options or info whatsoever, Digital Foundry has been alarmingly useful. But it's only annoying for someone who is nit picky and wants to know exactly what the support is like. If you don't care and just want to know a game supports the Pro, it's pretty easy going.

I love Stardew Valley something fierce, but man, listening to Dan clumsily defend putting it on the list was rough. Hearing him explain it reminded me that while I like him as a goof personality who blends really well with the rest of the GB crew, his ability to critically talk about games is uneven at best. His writing is better, but listening to him on podcasts always boils down to him using tautologies ("I like things because they're good, and I don't like things that are bad") or just dropping out of conversations entirely.

Though people's lazy attempts to ride the coat tails of Austin's informed, backed up stumping for Invisible Inc. last year was perhaps the greatest stumble. It was super-weird that Dan and Alex both tried to slide in their picks as "oh it's the Austin thing from last year" until Brad, I think, called them out for having to actually do the work and talk about their passion projects.

And my favorite bit was Jeff's response to Dan attempting to say that Inside was "a chore" in solving puzzles while offering Stardew Valley as a refreshing, creative alternative.
YOU'RE LITERALLY DOING CHORES
