Huh. I'm playing Doom for the first time, am halfway through (I'd guess) and I can't come to terms still with how amazing it is, in gameplay, graphics and story. Doom. On console.

I still can't even.

I've had Doom for about a month now and i think i'm about 2/3 through or something. I can see why people love it so much, and i did love it the first few hours. I just got bored after a while. Might be because FPS isn't my thing really.
Hitman stomps Doom

of course the last great fps campaign is 2012s Syndicate

I played through all of the co-op stuff with a friend on PC recently and two other people actually ended up joining like once in the 7-8 hours it took to beat that.

Starbreeze should make another fps.

Ah crap, they're making vr stuff now. Oh well.

Maybe they'll help with Payday 3 and the shooting wont be as bad.

What? Are you thinking of Quake?
I loooved doon as a kid and so did everybody else and i had no idea it even had MP.

No, Quake may have come out at a time when more people had access to online multiplayer but Doom was a huge multiplayer sensation when it came out. This stuff was in Masters of Doom, the book about the rise of id software.

Even Wikipedia mentions it:
In a press release dated January 1, 1993, id Software had written that they expected Doom to be "the number one cause of decreased productivity in businesses around the world."[14] This prediction came true at least in part: Doom became a major problem at workplaces, both occupying the time of employees and clogging computer networks with traffic caused by deathmatches. Intel, Lotus Development and Carnegie Mellon University are among many organizations reported to form policies specifically disallowing Doom-playing during work hours. At the Microsoft campus, Doom was by one account equal to a "religious phenomenon"

Watched all the deliberations with my wife for the first time. As some people have mentioned I remember then being a lot more ruthless earlier years. I don't mind really but I wanted to pkay an old one to my wife for comparison. Anyone have any recommendations? I have a terrible memory for these things.

We both lost it at Vinnys continual Mass Effect 2 digs haha.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Tried out Zenyatta for the first time thanks to Alex.

They fucked up. Zenyatta needed to be on the list.

Hell no

Staying up in the air without landing for minutes at a time becomes an exhilarating game in itself

You know who stays up in the air forever, and is also a space Egyptian?

That's right

Maybe it's because I suck at that type of aiming, but Pharah's rockets don't do nearly enough splash damage as they should. It makes me feel like I'm playing a Direct Hit Soldier in TF2, and I always hated that weapon.

She'd be way more fun if they just let her rocket jump for real and reworked her other two abilities.

They buffed her splash damage two patches ago I think.
She's also a lot harder to hit than Soldier is, so her rockets being able to kill people in 2 shots without one even being a direct hit would be frustrating, especially for supports.

Little behind on the casts here. Can't believe I'm listening them talk about DOOM for best story lol.

I just beat it moments ago. The story was quite thin. Jeff was, saying there should be a separate award for campaign of the year and I agree. Doom would've probably won that (I think that award should be reserved for games where the story isn't as essential to the playing of the game). It was a lot of fun to play the single player, but the story (like many FPS games) felt like an after thought. I said this before, but from what I saw of them playing Hitman, that had a more compelling story through its cutscenes. As a game, Doom was really awesome, even though sometimes it seemed unrelenting.

Oh! I remember the 2011 Delibs being fucking vicious. That's the one where it came down to Saints Row The Third and Skyrim. There's also the 2010 one between Red Dead and Mass Effect 2.

After finishing all 5 days of deliberations i'm okay with most of their awards, except 1.

How The Witness did not win "Best Looking Game" is fucking beyond me.

First that game's art style is damned gorgeous. It's not hyper realistic and not cell shaded, but a beautiful blend of the two. It's extremely varied with a number of different areas having a unique atmosphere with each one. The lighting was beautiful and their use reflections in the water was top tier.

Finally and the most important. This was the only game where the way the game looked directly impacted how you play the game. I won't go into details but if you watched their discussion on "Best Moment" you know what i'm talking about. Even forgoing that though, using the environment to solve some of those puzzles had to be done in such a way that doesn't make it obvious how to arrive at the solution but at the same time not completely esoteric.

Add to that the multiple "point of view" puzzles coupled with beautiful art and I think they done fucked up. I was shocked that nobody even fought for it. Like what in the hell?

COME ON SON!

It's why I think 'Best styyyle' and 'best looking' need clarification. Because there are things like art direction that trump pure technical visual fests. Witness and Overwatch for example, have amazing art directions, whilst Uncharted 4 just looks technically great

Games being argued against because they aren't 60fps in a best looking category is fucking stupid and it doesn't belong in the conversation. A game shouldn't be argued against because it's 30fps and this other game is 60fps a best looking game's argument points should be. I felt at times it was a GAF argument that 30fps is unplayable.

And it's not the first category where they brought other elements of the game into a category where that element has absolutely nothing to do with it. And the Best new character argument where
Helmet won. A fucking meme wins over actual characters with actual character development.
That made me immediately not care about the rest of the winners for the rest of the week.
Helmet should of been taken off the list immediatly

Still a good bit behind obviously, but this is an angrier representation of how I feel about the awards so far.

Yeah, I think Best Styyyyyyle either needs to go or needs some very serious clarification. There was some serious confusion among the GB team as to what it means, and I think they relied too heavily on the "swagger" definition in the end. ("Best styyyyle" and "best swaaaaaaager" mean very different things, honestly...)

Finally finished listening to all 5 days. Now listening to the Paul Barnett episode. Pretty great!

Jeff's petulance on Inside was really irritating though. All of the guys are guilty of denigrating great games just to score political points, but Jeff is by far the most egregious at doing so.

I remember Jeff talking about Inside back on the bombcast and while he never was a massive fan of the game he certainly always recognized its accomplishments and just acknowledged it hasn't his cup of tea.

So when he goes and starts saying shit about how it's "awful" or "terrible" during the final deliberations, maybe it's time to take a step back and reconsider what you're really trying to achieve in this discussion?

Same thing when they were discussing "best moment", one of the guys reminded Jeff about some of the incredible moments throughout Inside - and at the time Jeff said something like "oh yeah those were some amazing moments...".....maybe stop spending so much time attacking shit and instead revisit it to see whether your opinion might differ a second time around?

Jeff's obnoxious cynicism carried over into the Paul Barnett episode too. Every time Paul mentioned something he liked, Jeff immediately seemed compelled to attack whatever it was Paul was complimenting. It happened with Inside, of course, but also Battlefield 1, Enter the Gungeon, and one or two others on his list.

GOTY deliberations weren't nearly cutthroat and brutal enough for me. Still enjoyable though. Although the whole thing really seemed to be force 3 games into the top 10, then argue about the top 2 and the other ones just leave em wherever they were originally. Last year's austin forcing invisible inc was already kind of ridiculous, but at least I guess he brought a whole bunch of arguments to the table about it. Then this year people barely even said anything to get their games in except Dan with stardew valley.

I feel like the gigantic list of games and slowly cutting them down had more discussion about the actual games themselves too on top of the more brutal nature of it.

Just dawned on me that VA-11 Hall-A: A Cyberpunk Bartender Action got robbed on a Best Style nod. Game was fun. Music was great too.

Pretty weak Best Game discussion this year. Top 10 barely moved, once it was in place. I feel like they buckled to Alex and Jason over Thumper and Hyperlight Drifter just so that they could move on.

I feel like Alex has the wrong mindset, he seems to only care about something he likes getting recognition rather than trying to build the best list. Thumper did not derserve to be on the top 10. They have their own personal lists for that reason.

Jeff had some weird vendetta against DOOM not winning for some reason despite praising it all year and never really seeming to care about the half baked multiplayer until now.

It all came together too smoothly this year, super tame and not all that interesting by the end.
