Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Agreed. I'm glad Alex has at least mentioned TLG and Tokyo Mirage Sessions

Alex is my MVP this year so far in all the discussions. I'm also happy he's a lot more persistent with his choices during the deliberations. He used to give up a bit too easily.

Uncharted is getting Bloodborne'd this year for GOTY.

Nah. Not seeing many talk about it and it's barely featuring in anyone's top 10s outside GB. Bloodborne had the critical acclaim that GB didn't get to but U4 is a bit of a dud, sorry. Greg Miller has you covered though.

Uncharted 4 has received more critical acclaim than Bloodborne got from the gaming media. Gamespot has it 2nd, for example. MetaCritic has it #1.

It was on Brad, Jason and Dan's personal 10 (Jeff had it at 11) but none of them really put up much a fight. Think the same thing will happen with Uncharted 4 because "well it's another Uncharted."

Uncharted 4 might only be on Vinny's top 10 this year. Dan didn't have it on his.

Bloodborne got pushed out despite four guys liking it a lot, because they decided to let Austin get his pet indie game in the top 10. So it's not really the same thing.

I don't think their Best Style and Best visuals categories are really working out. They are far too broad and they end up comparing very different aspects of games against each other. It would be better to have

Best graphics - for best technical visuals
Best art style - for best artistic direction
Best style/flare - for best attitude or personality

No Factorio from Vinny.

No Uncharted 4 from Dan.

Personal top tens have been pleasantly surprising this year.

I like it when their award categories aren't as cleanly defined as they could be, even if it means some games get unfairly shafted - it forces them to make hard cuts and arguments for their games rather than "well of course game X wins this"

Think they've down this road though. The guys acknowledge they aren't the best to vote on best technical even if they did hint at some considered choices this year. The technical thing is also pretty boring and they decide to do best looking game which means more subjectivity.

if anything best style just needs clearing up which Brad said and best art and graphics comes under best looking game and yes Inside can be considered best looking game.

We get this every year, people want to see the obvious technical marvels get listed but that isn't Giant Bomb.

Battlefield 1 might be the best looking game I have ever seen and considering how well it scales across hardware, Dice are wizards with Frostbite. It's a shame that the category pretty much eliminates anything targeting photo realism and not heavily stylized or fantastical.

They gave it enough recognition in the podcast over and over and said if it was a different award it would be included and probably top and one said it was unmatched technically.

Jeff seems to be unfairly giving the PC version of Forza Horizon 3 a bit of stick from things he's read.

The game scales great with the GPU. You can play it 1440p, 1800p 2160p easily. The big issue was going over 30fps and perhaps for any UWP game the store has issues.

This is what I mean. It just seems odd when they are comparing the performance and texture qualities of a game like B1 with the conceptual beauty of a game like Inside. Just seems like comparing apples to oranges.

Best Looking is a nonsense category that they sure waste a lot of time on every year. Half of them thought BF1 was the clear technical superior this year. The argument that it shouldn't be on the list because it's too dark and depressing and who wants to look at that, y'know, like World War 1 is supposed to look like, just doesn't work but also I don't think enough of them cared enough to point out how ludicrous that argument was.

Bloodborne and Invisible Inc are better games than half their 2015 list

Super Mario Maker winning 2015 is still the most baffling thing ever. Only two people from the whole crew cared for it and everyone else either didn't care or didn't like it. Not saying Mario Maker is a bad game but it didn't reflect how the GB felt as a whole.

i don't think that's the case. Just because a game is supposed to look dark and depressing for historical accuracy doesn't excuse the fact that it's not appealing to look at.

Every since hes been coming into the studio I feel like hes been a lot more influential in these discussions, particularly for these smaller categories. Witcher ran away with a bunch of awards last year largely because of him.

I like it when their award categories aren't as cleanly defined as they could be, even if it means some games get unfairly shafted - it forces them to make hard cuts and arguments for their games rather than "well of course game X wins this"

Yeah, the whole point is to highlight how absurd the whole thing is and having loose definitions for each category just feeds into that. Honestly, arguing whether Inside is a better looking game than Uncharted makes as much sense as whether Stardew Valley is a better playing game than Doom.

but Jeff really really liked it and that's like 90%.

Uncharted deserves no award this year.

The VR stuff was decent, but it felt like Alex kind of set back and let Vinny do most of the heavy lifting there. Kind of wanted to see Alex move around, especially in Petaluma as opposed to having Vinny fly around. The Budget Cuts bit was good tho.

Hitmas is still the best thing they've done this year, even with the GameTapes style look at Gamestop circa E3 2005. Industry talk, especially from Jeff, is always super interesting.

It is by far the worst port I have played in recent memory. It struggles to maintain a solid 60 on my Titan X, it stutters like mad in areas, has very obvious input lag and I experienced constant crashes to desktop. And that's leaving out all of the bullshit I had to endure with the worst digital store I have ever come across.

At least refunding it was painless.

seriously, MGR should've been the final Metal Gear Scanlon feature. So much fun and also fun to watch because of how ridiculous it gets. Now that Dan left, we'll probably never see it. Skype shit ain't the same.

Ugh, it would have been so great if they'd done this before Dan left. Maybe it's the secret video for the last day of GotY!

I don't think that's really fair. I feel like Rocket League could have easily won in 2015 if GBEast + Jason had really pushed for it. Jeff even gave them the perfect opportunity, but they just let him redirect the conversation without even trying. They could have even made a last ditch effort to pull over Brad to put RL over Mario Maker when it was clear MGS wasn't going to win and they didn't bother.

You have to at least be willing to put up a fight if you want to make it to the top of the list.

Not only that but in the future when there's no or next to no technical advancements to be made you're left with artistic merit.

Think of a film, "graphics" are already there, its about the lighting choices, the style tones and mood, the cinematography, locations. Producing the most realistic mud, having higher resolution textures, more polygons adding sub surface scattering and point lights are not necessarily things that should automatically elevate it to the top no matter how much some of us gamers love the technical advancements me included.

Yes. I remember your avatar and your continuous posts. You stood out as the one most afflicted by a long shot. I wouldn't expect to read anything else.

BF1 actually has some gorgeous vistas. The twilight setting in the Tank mission and the mission in the plane with the mountains were gorgeous. BF1 had a lot of realism but it also had some really gorgeous scenes and settings in some levels. I think many military shooters in general always have their art direction ignored.

Yeah, as someone mentioned before, Mario Maker is the first time Jeff's top game has also been the staff pick since ME2. He definitely carries a lot of weight in these discussions but he isnt just railroading the process so that it all goes exactly as he wants it to.

He did railroad Mario Maker. He went there to place Mario Maker at the top and that's what he did. No matter what.

I mean, it doesn't bother me but he forced Mario Maker as number one and what others wanted didn't matter at all.

Behind Doom, Hitman, and Overwatch?

Seems likely.

Nah, he'll push Titanfall for top 3, get Superhot in at 4 and leave Overwatch at #5. He'll get help from Brad on pushing down Overwatch in letting Hitman hit #2.

Nah son, this shits the super bowl of video games.

I thought that was E3? Or is that Christmas? I'm losing track of what gaming thing relates to what American Holiday.

I've got little to no patience for multiplayer. The game types or the community. Filled with the same toxic environment that just numbs my brain to be around. And I've tried turning off the mic, but that also kinda defeats the point no? Camaraderie and working together? I just can't do it and find no pleasure or fun in it.

Also getting older it's a lot harder to have a group of RL friends you can round up for long play sessions. Last time I managed something like that was gears3 horde mode.

Single player was great enough, I'll just never want to try the multiplayer.
