Is this what terrible awful heartless soulless wrong people felt like last year when Jeff was right and pushed Game of the CENTURY Mario Maker to win everything?

Please Stop Award goes to Brad and DOOM

I respect Brad's opinions, but they are wrong

I don't think so. Aren't they just ports?

I think a port of a game to a new console is a remaster.

But I just realized they are only doing most necessary remaster, not most and least necessary. Least is where I figured the RE games would be mentioned.

On Doom and the Best Looking/Style categories it's in:
It's really irritating they separate these two categories and then it practically wins both(I know it was runner up). I suppose it will be winning best moment and GOTY as well on the strength of the opening. It doesn't really stand out for style OR graphics. Especially not over Bound/Abzu/Firewatch etc...games who are defined by their art. I thought those categories were supposed to help other games stand out?
Yeah Doom in Style category was weird to me. I mean the game is awesome and fun but I don't exactly remember it for its style. The games you listed are definitely more stylish than Doom.

True, they mentioned Dead Rising games but quickly axed them. I assume if RE games were mentioned, probably just sweep them away as well. Stil can't believe they forgot about CoD: MW.

How is it that none of them have done the Helmut Kruger opportunity on the Tokyo level when Helmut Kruger has become such a huge thing to them.

It starts with a guy extremely excited about his plastic surgury to look like Kruger, and after you steal his outfit, you go to the plastic surgeon for unwraping your face bandages, where the surgeon is so overcome by emotion at the beauty of his work that he has to hold back his tears as he tells you he needs to take a moment alone to process it.

It's a perfect moment that wraps up how silly and great the Helmut Kruger character is, even after him being potentially killed 6 missions earlier.

The icing on the cake is when you break into that NPC's room and see what he's got in there. All I could think about during Helmut discussion was how badly everybody needed to see that room.

Mine is pretty and pink
What is up with everyone being up in arms that DOOM probably will win? It's a good game and most of the duders really love the game. Why does it not deserve a GOTY at Giantbomb?

Still without luck
Sorry, but I don't need to have tried VR to know I have zero interest in the garbage being put out for it. Or that I'm sick of GB wasting time covering it. Or that it's overpriced and Kinect 2 in more ways than one.

I'd be more inclined to put Doom down for Style than Best Looking. The movement, the combat and the aesthetic as a whole feed into that brutal, visceral style really nicely, whereas the visuals are just fine, rather than some of the best of the year.

Best Looking:

Uncharted 4 is "just more of the same".
DOOM is "so good you guys".
And
Inside
wins?
And where the hell is
ABZU
?

Man, I'm angry over irrelevant video game awards.

The entire Award was quite possibly the most boring Award discussion ever. I'd rather have another Best Sky Award.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Where did Alex get the idea that the PS4 and Xbone versions of Skyrim are more buggy than the PS3 and 360 versions?

Haven't listened yet, but is he just confusing the 'slight' framerate drop in the 4K PS4 Pro version that everyone freaked about for a broken game?

Man, I'm still going to be buying physical media till the day it ends completely 100%. Having a game or a film physically in my hands feel much better than looking at it on a screen, plus I tend to share stuff with family members and friends. That's how I've always felt when it comes to physical media and it's a shame how things are going when it comes to games and their ridiculous patches, you need 2-3 TB's worth of hard-drive to survive if you're a person that buys lots of games. I'm running on 2.5TB hard-drives when it comes to my X1 and PS4.

Movies are much better when it comes to having it on physical though. You get the best audio and video quality as well as a bunch of bonus material often not available digitally.

Its not that. The consensus on it everywhere I read is that it is a broken mess. I put in over 20 hours myself on the XBO with a bunch of mods activated and didnt have a single issue so I am not sure what the exact complaints are.

Why isn't COD4 on the remastered list?

Because it's more than just a remaster I feel. It's more akin to Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. They also added stuff in the MP that wasn't there before. That's my only guess. The next step to take after those games I mentioned is Ratchet & Clank which is pretty much a remake.

My wife has played 200 hours on the PS4 and there are crashes and glitches (including one where her eyes started glowing like green lasers), but nothing on the scale of the PS3 version.

That's the only reason I still buy physical media now.

I'm definitely with you on movies. I'm pretty disappointed bluray sales have been poor since the quality is so much higher.

I also have a strong pull to buy physical books, but that is harder for me to justify because of storage space and the conveniences ebooks provide.

I don't get the dismissal of Skyrim there at all. Jeff and Alex were making dumb arguments but I don't think the group had played much of it. It's not more broken than the PS3 version, not even close. In fact, I think it is the most necessary remaster of this year. I got to a point on Skyrim on PS3 where I didn't finish because the game was nigh-unplayable. Skyrim PS4 had mods, waaaay better load times, better visuals, less bugs, all DLC, etc. It was necessary simply because there was no console hardware that played that game the way it should be played, IMO.

I completely agree with their stance on how the review cycle and how it's trending away from sites and publications like Giant Bomb, but the cynic in me is that it'll be their number one because of how it affect their industry as a whole. It's still a shitty practice when tied to preorder and dlc pushes.

Right there with you on the physical front. I still buy physical games when I can get them and loathe large day one patches where I have to wait hours to play. I still get my movies from a local RedBox instead of streaming.

Best Remaster (But Not Too Good Because Then It's Not A Remaster)

I know they love Doom, but there is no need to give it some of the awards it's been getting.
It had no right winning best style over some other games out this year.

I've just been catching up on the first two podcasts, I was really surprised not to hear Batman Arkham VR pop up as a mention in best VR experience it absolutely blew me away and I was grinning ear to ear the whole time when you descend into the Batcave and put the suit on. I think putting it in the disappointing category was really harsh as well.

Depending on how a game is coded/files are organised even tiny changes can mean huge patch sizes. And since games are are huge now, so are the patches. As long as game sizes keep getting bigger, so will the patches.

What? gears is totally a remaster

Best Remaster (But Not Too Good Because Then It's Not A Remaster)

It's kind of fucked because publishers spoiled the wording. You have different levels of remasters now because every developer focuses on different things when it comes to remastering a game. Some of them though come hovering close to remakes because compared to the other remasters it's clear alot of work has gone into it. Like Halo Anniversary 1 & 2, people call them remasters but they sure as hell not in my eyes because compared to other remasters these games blows them the fuck out.

Prototype Biohazard Bundle is a remaster to me. Gears is not because there was work done not only in the SP portion of the game but also the MP itself when it comes to the maps. A remaster to me is when you do the bare minimum of just making a game 1080p/60FPS and even then, some remasters don't achieve that lol. I just feel it is important to differentiate the work some developers do over the others. Let's just call Prototype Biohazard Bundle a remaster and Gears a super remaster.

Jeff/Alex vs Brad/Vinny is GO!

Jason and Dan are kinda just watching the whole thing. heh

I think they qualify as remasters if they play the same and the content is pretty much the same, even if the quality is vastly improved.

So, Resident Evil on GameCube is clearly a remake.

While Resident Evil on PS4 is a remaster (of that remake).

Almost finished with the STOP segment. Listening to Jeff is infuriating (and Alex to an extent).
Stop making excuses for publishers/developers you guys, saying "Oh the reality is there is no other solution, these games have to ship like this"...fucking no, they don't, they didn't from the beginning of gaming until THIS generation. A 10+ gig patch is not a game being buggy or broken and needing a fix, it's shitloads of art or sound or whatever else, so settling on 'unfinished' games is the best wording. A game that is broken and needs a day one patch to fix some shit is totally not a huge deal, but redownloading 1/3+ of the total size of the game is almost entirely indicative of the fact that what was on the disc is not even close to resembling the finished product. It's just extremely poor management or publishing constraints or whatever else. Devs were being rushed before, I'm glad we can patch to fix issues, but literally using that time between gold and 'launch' as time to actually develop the game is wrong.

What you're describing is the difference between a bad remaster, decent remaster, and exceptional remaster. Make no mistake though they are all remasters.

Calling something a remaster doesn't imply lack of effort or anything

Yes they do. Don't just think about people with data caps, think about the entire world. Like I was shocked when I first bought Xbox One and came back home to play DR3, I was greeted with this.

What the fuck is 13GBs? That's multiple indie games. Also...

(Turns out this was a screw up on UBI's part)

These are not my pictures but come the fuck on, give me a break. Halo: The Masterchief Collection for example released with 15-20GB day one if I remember correctly(which is downloading the entire MP of the games and their maps).

I don't disagree with that, I just think that the wording is kind of all over the place. Like what does a "remaster" even mean anymore, you know? I just wish more people would differentiate the efforts that went into them, is all.

Funny, DR4 had a 12+GB patch when I decided to play it last week. Turns out I couldn't play it that night. No idea wtf it was.

I agree the naming for remasters is terrible when people discuss them. I get so annoyed when people call something like TLOU remastered an "HD remake"
