Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

I couldn't even finish Doom, it got so repetitive. Them giving it a 5/5 still boggles my mind. It's good, but it's not... whatever, I'll still watch their stuff. It's not like I pay much mind to Game Informer or Gametrailer's reviews.

My biggest surprise is that
Stardew Valley
made their list of biggest surprises.
That gives Dan at least a small leg-up on GotY talks, even if It'll barely crack the top 10, if at all.

Oh well.

Better luck next year Hitman.

I'll take Bronze or Silver, I guess.

Thought it would win Best Surprise at least.

Doom really deserves it, though.
There was so God damn much going against that game before release. There was the unanimously bad alpha/beta, Carmack leaving the company, the absolutely dreadful Call of Doom footage that got out there, the deceptively slower-paced E3 demo (where the player was slowly walking and looking around like it was any other game), the lack of pre-release reviews, and even the shitty box art.

The only red flag Hitman had was the late shift to episodic releases.

Brad's hateboner for Clash Royale is p embarrassing at this point. That game is great. Emotes were annoying sometimes but strictly less toxic than literally any competitive game with communication. And now you can mute them so???

I mean, there are more issues to that game than just the emotes tbh

Listening to these have made me realize that Nuclear Throne and Enter the Gungeon are different games, and I'm trying my damnedest to differentiate between the two without having to look them up.

Looks like Overwatch may take the GOTY crown....

Sigh...such a waste. Those graphics and art in a fucking multiplayer shooter. Imagine what could have been with a focused SINGLE player campaign.

Doom was high on my list but I think it made it to number 1 after watching Danny's documentary

The people in charge of making that doom, making it the way it was, hitting everything right, doing pardoy without being too hint wink nudge like Saints Row, Mick Gordon it just hit every note. The flow of combat, the art style. Everything. I probably won't even play it as much as Overwatch or Titanfall 2 but its like a near perfect campaign. Maybe the best single player campaign in a shooter I've ever played.

If that same team doesn't make a sequel or a reimagining of Quake 1 then I hate everything

What are you basing that on? It's looking more and more like DOOM by the second.

Doom, Overwatch, Hitman, I enjoyed them all thoroughly this year. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine were amazing. Loved Dark Souls 3 and Battlefield 1. Played a ton of Elite Dangerous in VR. At least I've enjoyed games this in 2016.

Jeff said this on whether or not DOOM was most surprising: "I don't bring it up[the multiplayer] to undermine it in this category..."

He is going to push SUPER HOT over DOOM for GOTY.

The same team, but instead of Mick Gordon they pull off this Hitman-esque caper where they sneak up on Trent Reznor, jam a heroin needle in his arm and put him in a recording studio.

Seriously, the dynamic approach to music where you get ambient or heavy music depending on the action happening would make for an incredible NIN soundtrack.

I can still go back and read my 2015 impressions of Overwatch here on GAF. The first beta I got into, I thought it was a really fun game but my feelings were more like 'it'd be cool if more people played this than Heroes of the Storm'. Not 'this will be an unstoppable juggernaut phenomenon'. I know a guy who has put thousands of hours into TF2, was literally always playing TF2 when I saw him playing anything, and now only plays Overwatch.

I guess in that case I was surprised more at the reception to the game than the game itself, which I knew was good (but was still better than I expected). Yet in the case of a multiplayer shooter, that in itself was a nice surprise. I never expected to be able to play a game like that with my friends that only play Blizzard games, of which I have several.

I could see him pushing Titanfall 2. Game is so good, and nails both multiplayer and single player.

Also, ya'll will probably think I'm crazy but I'm playing infinite warfare now and the campaign is insanely good, it might end up being my favourite fps campaign this year or at least second to tf2. I am shocked by how much fun it is.

I feel like Best Surprise is a good indicator for how Doom vs. Hitman will go during the Top 10.
Everyone kinda unanimously agrees Doom got the win, and only a few arguments for Hitman above it. You can hear shreds of Jeff's future arguments against Doom by bringing up the shit multiplayer and snapmap, and Brad basically shrugging it off illustrates how he'll combat that.

Doom will win, and Hitman should be #2, but I could see it being #3 or 4 behind Overwatch and/or The Witness, which I would find infuriating personally.

Given the amount of videos HITMAN has (and the sheer hilarity in each of 'em) you'd think it'd be their number one. But heck, both DOOM and HITMAN were superb games we got this year. Glad to see the both of them get this much love.

Honestly I didn't think they'd be this hot on Doom.

I think Doom is is great at what it does but that thing is pretty much 'just' a linear shooter, I beat it, went back to get the rest of the achievements and basically am cool never playing it again, and I don't really see the GB guys going back to it either.

I think Hitman is easily the better game. What Hitman offers is way more unique and it also has way more legs.

Maybe, but that only matters in the sense that it'd give Hitman a better shot, because SUPERHOT has no chance to get their GOTY. I could see Jeff actually being the one that pushes back a bit on Doom though, or at least being the one that brings up it's negatives.

Dan, Jeff and Brad both went back to play Doom again when the Arcade mode hit. I guarantee Brad will play Doom again.

There was a bunch of Shenmue content on the site this year too. Doesn't mean Shenmue's winning anything.

Is this what amazing great caring right people felt like last year when Jeff was wrong and pushed good but not great Mario Maker to win everything?

Correct. Mario Maker has real issues, it is good but definitely not GOTY. It was a shame no one cared enough to fight Jeff on it.

Just a fight over second place this year. Kind of a lousy podcast day because of the awards though, at least this means they saved the best stuff for the last two days.

Hitman has so much more content and variety than Doom but Shoemaker gonna Shoemaker.

Watching those two bullshit their way through quick looks was goddamned gold.

"I'M HELMUT FUCKING KRUGER"

Who is the Austin this year?

Bringing in a game nobody cares about to kick out GAF's last years GotY? + defending a broken game because that's how these games are.

They went back when there was new content. And none of them even really liked the Arcade mode.
Also I'm not saying there isn't a good chance DOOM won't be their #1
just that'd be the wrong choice.

Lore in Overwatch? Is it in the actual game and I've just missed it? Or is it just the silly stuff outside of it? Because to me, that's nothing more than fan fiction, regardless of who makes it.

It's just a fun multiplayer shooter with odd different characters. Whatever "lore" exists outside of the game is meaningless to me.

fun fact-

Overwatch the game isn't canon. Everything that happens outside of it is the canon stuff. So calling it fan fiction is....silly.

i bet it would have been as middling as titanfall 2's campagin!

Definitely deserves to be GOTY but as you saw here there is no way they will beat Vinny/Jeff/Brad. Brad singlehandedly shut them down, Brad/Jeff/Vinny together easily makes Doom a lock

Doom is awesome and I don't really care, just is fun to listen to the arguments

Are you really surprised? I love the Bombcast, but they're some of the biggest dudebro gamers in the circuit and DOOM scratches that itch.

DOOM is a fucking great game, too.

For the first part probably Alex with, say, Darkest Dungeon, but let's be honest bringing up a game nobody cares about isn't very hard in this group, as most of them aren't very good at looking outside their own comfort zone.

Invisible Inc is actually a pretty good example of that, seeing as how X-com was their 2012 GOTY and Invisible Inc is a better game in that genre.

Rami Ismail did a blog post on day one patches and why they exist on his blog.

There's a lot of good stuff here, but the most applicable thing you can pick up from this is, contrary to what Giant Bomb says, no longer releasing games on disc isn't the only problem.

iirc the in-game lore is that they are all very very gay for one another and have lots of fun together and make me very very happy to be playing overwatch

Ehh his whole "it's a scam to frustrate you into spending money" doesn't really track either. The way cards come out of chests and your crown towers level makes it real hard to pay to win. You can easily get into the second-to-top arena without spending a dime. You can get into legendary arena without spending a dime if you catch some luck.

There is actual lore in the game, a lot of which directly references the stuff you call fanfiction!
