Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

I'm in the privileged position of having fast-ass internet (and fast ass-internet) so patches haven't been the slightest concern in so long. Also I get all my games digitally.

I wonder if Deus Ex will be mentioned at all before awards end.

I've actually been super disappointed that it hasn't appeared once, IIRC, on any guest lists. I get that the game kinda came and went with a whimper other than some (unearned) negative buzz about this super dense and extremely replayable 35-40 hour game being "unfinished" somehow because it ends with a sequel hook or having microtransactions that the game doesn't encourage at all (and some earned negative buzz about the racism analogy being half-baked and forced), but it was the game other than Overwatch that I spent the most time utterly engrossed with. The level design and gameplay was sublime, the music and art direction was fantastic, and even if the main narrative felt like the first act of a bigger story, the tiny narratives told through the environments and sidequests were the best in the entire series.

Jeff's gonna betray Brad on DOOM during the GOTY segment. I can feel it.

Please let this happen!

This year is kinda lame so far. Drew and Jason might as well not be in that room and Alex for as much as he talks tends to back away still. Although he was the driving force in hottest mess. Respect for that. Brad's hypocritical as always. Jeff makes no sense as always.

The Overcooked vid is a ton of chaotic fun, not to be missed.

Overcooked looks like an amazing game. I wish I had three other people to play with.

It is. It works as a 2 player game as well, I sometimes wish it had online co-op but the game is made for local and it should probably stay that way.

Deus Ex is seriously getting overlooked this awards season, it's a real damn shame :(

It's one of my top five, but I get why some are leaving if off. What's sad is it underperforming means there might not be another one, at least not from this current team that knows how to make them proper.

I'll say, when I hear some say the game is ~15 hours, I'm like, how? First run in MD was north of 40 hours. About the same time I put into my first two Human Revolution playthrough. The open world/hub is extraordinary for exploration.

Overcooked on Switch would be great. Two controllers already packed-in and the game is simple enough to be controlled well.

If I was Nintendo I'd totally approach the developers for a special Nintendo version with some new Zelda inspired recipes or stages or something. Surely not the biggest moneymaker but such a feel-good game.

I liked the game quite a bit, but it still felt limited in how boring the open world felt. It's a shame since I did a no kill run which was exciting to me. It's a decent game, but there are a lot of great games coming this year.

Mordor was cool and worthwhile but yeah, remember when everyone thought the nemesis system was going to be A Thing that other games would take and run with?

lol oops

I definitely want to play Deus Ex at some point. Although I have a "Games I didn't play from 2015 that I intend to play in 2016" list, and I ended up not playing any of those.

I'm legitimately irked that the moody pop song covers didn't even make the top 3 for Please Stop. This is an awful marketing trend that is so much bigger than games and I think it needs to be shit on at every opportunity.

So glad they brought up the solemn pop song cover in videogame ad trope. It's fucking annoying and not just relegated to videogames, in the UK it has been happening for years (usually a church choir or kids singing) and I hate it so much. Game adverts are complete trash anyway, and they make it worse with this. I mute ads whenever they come on just to avoid as much of this cynical shit as possible.

You're a big guy.
The overcooked video is pretty boring. it is the sort of game they would mock if nintendo made it. I'm sure it is fun, but it isn't good to watch.

I can't vibe with the Best New Character category. Way, way too wishy washy, and I'm not ever sure why Trico or that Witcher 3 guy were even considered.

edit: because TLG should be past the cutoff and HoS came out last year

Trico is probably the best character out of the bunch because of his sense of place in the world and the relationship you build with him. He also has an interesting backstory. Although, nobody would know that unless you play and finish TLG.

No, no. It's getting exactly how many nominations/awards it deserves.

Vlodimir is a legitimately fantastic character, the best out of that list of nominees. The only reason he shouldn't have been considered is that DLC doesn't come out in 2016. It wasn't even late 2015 either, Heart of Stone was an October release.

Trico is the only character in videogames ever that feel like an actual thing and not badly written constructs.

Trico makes me want to get a dog. I'm still working my way through TLG but whatever technical issues I'm having with it, the nuance of Trico's animations and behavior is really something special.

I agree with you, I just thought it wouldn't qualify for these awards because it came out so late. That was the impression I got from an earlier podcast where it was suggested that both FFXV and TLG were past the cutoff, and Jeff kinda shrugged his shoulders like, "yeah, whatever." And they probably should be, because at the time of recording their deliberations nobody has substantively played either game except Alex.

And Hearts of Stone came out in 2015, so again, why are they talking about it?

I haven't played the game, but I have been so impressed with what I've seen of Trico. Every other traditional "character" in contention was basically competing for "least shitty character", because they're still all video game characters.

I think my top 5 is

Deus EX MD
Dishonored 2
Uncharted 4
FFXV
Dirt Rally

Looking at my trophy list I played a lot of older games like Until Dawn, Arkham Knight and Galax-Z this year. And the PS3 & PS4 versions of RE4

Not the witcher characters. They were fucking great. Not 2016 though.

Heck, even UC4 had a great soundtrack even though it was understated at times.

Speaking of soundtracks, I think they should have two music categories. One for best original music (i.e. original scores) and one for best use of licensed music.
