Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Advanced Warfare really only placed that high because of what a weird year 2014 was. I mean look at the list as a whole and it's just lol.

Jeff saying it was the best CoD in years was enough to get top 5.

Dan, we've GOT to kill the Witness.

In my heart, I'd like to see Overwatch win. But Hitman or Doom will be fine choices as well.

Which I'll never understand. The U.I. is so terrible for that system and its never even explained or given a tutorial that well (like a lot of elements in that game weirdly enough?) that I can't see why anyone would engage with it. They never bother to give you a reason why you should build up stuff either. All the stuff you can do is completely superficial and just leads to more infinite quests that are vomited at you.

You just have to chalk it up to the strength and conviction of Austin's rhetoric. Compare that to the way people like Alex or Patrick used to sheepishly promote their favorite games by saying "I know this won't make the list, but I still think it deserves some recognition." They admit defeat before they've even made their case, whereas Austin never acted like Invisible Inc or Fallout 4 was less than deserving of accolades.

I honestly want to listen to the fallout 4 defense again lol. It was like what a 40 min back and forth? So great lol.

Needs to be the material these dudes on YouTube, reddit, gaf, reads from to win arguments.

Jeff loved advanced warfare. He still mentions it every time a new COD comes out.

Well that's what I mean, but perhaps just phrased it badly. Nobody besides Jeff spent any significant amount of time with Advanced Warfare. Nobody else could argue against CoD:AW with their own experiences. Since they didn't want to rock the boat by going against a senior staffer, suddenly the game made its way into the Top 5.

Invisible Inc was sort of the same issue. Nobody except Austin played it, so no cogent argument could be made against it. Everyone wants to be welcoming, so they let the new staffer have his pick and moved on.

If Jeff or Brad is really passionate about a game it's pretty much gonna be in the top 5

Sure, I think that people just weren't expecting it, at that point people already knew that if Brad or Jeff want a game on the list they are going to get it.

Austin got it on his first try, which only feels strange beacuse guys like Vinny and Alex have never repped a game so hard despite them being at Giant Bomb for so long.

Well, Alex did kinda go for Splatoon but even that was a joint effort with Dan

Brad can work some incredible magic, but he could only push DOTA2 to #7, or Destiny to #10.

I think only Jeff has the power to singlehandedly shoehorn a game into the Top 5 (Advanced Warfare). And even that's really only in the event that nobody else played it to any significant extent.

He couldn't get syndicate to top 5.

He couldn't crown sr3 over skyrim.

Brad managed to brainwash Ryan into agreeing with him that Skyrim was GOTY.

Jeff did manage to get it AW into the top 5 but ina very weak year when Shadow of Mordor was GOTY

Rudds is still THE force to be reckoned with

Dan got Mario Kart 8 on his first try, after digging his heels in. Austin's win for Invisible Inc is more impressive though since it doesn't have the nostalgia and pedigree that Mario Kart does.

Jeff: "They took their sweet time with this thing, and then pumped out the same fucking game. This is the most disappointing game of the year.....in terms of expectations for these games and how much money they have made in the past, this is bullshit!"

Brad: "I wouldn't expect anything different."

Jeff: "Then you are soft!"

Such brilliance from Gerstmann.

Austin Walker: "If I buy a Hyundai every three years, and it breaks down every year after that. Again and again and again....when I buy my 6th Hyundai, I'm not allowed to say I am disappointed by that Hyundai."

Totally reasonable bullshit from Walker....don't complain about an unreliable brand if you keep buying it.

In hindsight Jeff's analogy of comparing a car to fallout 4 should have dead the whole thing there.

Guys I'm going to go out on a limb with some predictions

-Alex brings up a game just to mention it
-Jeff decides that a discussion or decision is over without it actually happening
-Brad quadruples down on some point as if it's religious dogma and then three days later uses the directly opposing argument when it's convenient
-Vinny concedes a point when he was making the most sense, just to be nice
-Jeff dismisses some beloved game out of hand because it didn't appeal to his tastes, acts befuddled that other people are nominating it and tries to shut it down and move on as fast as possible
-A category ends with an inexplicable "I have to listen to this to hear how they hell they decided this" decision because nobody can agree on what the category actually means, or they arbitrarily decide that it means something different this year because ???
-Brad goes "Oh come on" and basically argues that he's entitled to one category win because someone else was happy with an outcome
-Jeff gets a game in a prime spot on the list that only he cares about and nobody really argues against it
-Most Disappointing Game once again devolves into a semantics battle of whether a game is bad or whether it's just disappointing or whether that matters this year, as well as someone arguing that they personally weren't excited for it so it can't be disappointing - the final result is baffling
-Brad's arguments for or against a game begin to get so heated that he starts exaggerating claims to the point of pure falsehoods
-Someone introduces a joke category purely for a single thing they wanted to recognize
-Drew speaks up once to say his piece and then disappears into the background
- Brad says he hopes to play more of [game currently being discussed] over the break when everyone knows he won't
- Alex is the first to mention what his GOTY is because he knows it might be the only hope he has to get the crew to listen to his arguments
- Dan gets under Brad's skin by trying to cut a game he likes earlier than he's ready to accept
- Vinny doesn't argue one way or the other but asks a question that eventually determines a winner
- A game deserving of a Best Soundtrack spot gets cut because of poor choice in songs played
- Someone points out that Jeff has already bolded a winner in the midst of an ongoing debate
- Vinny states that every game on the list is great before they start cutting
- Jeff expresses discontent with the methodology being used to narrow their GOTY list down to 10 games
- Alex tries to knock down a game that's clearly going to stay where it is because he's somehow oblivious to the fact that everyone else really liked it
- The crew asks Drew where he stands on a stalemate despite having barely played either game but he manages to deliver a logical answer anyway

-The Witness will be cut from the list (if it even comes up) with some bullshit deal.

:(

Seriously though, I can see ALL of those predictions come true lol

I think Alex's dark horse is probably Thumper?

The Dave Snider tiebreaker note said "ask Drew."

Alex, Vinny, Dan and Jason (?) all play Overwatch on a consistent basis (or they did?) so I think it has a decent chance of placing pretty high

I think the car stuff from Austin was a major victory for him.
Also leaving out the part where Austin broke down why Jeff's analogy didn't work

In a just world it would win.
But Brad.

Favourite Austin moment was shutting down Brad's argument for best graphics for Batman. That was precise, clean and well executed. Brad's argument was terrible, as always.

GotY is like playing cards...
  • Shooter's Law---Select all AAA shooters and put them on the top ten list. If the list is full, start over and try again.
  • Shoemaker's Gambit---Select one game. This game will be randomly added to the top three.
  • Gerstmann Maneuver---Select five games. Discard three. The remaining two games are guaranteed a spot of your choice on the top ten list, the other three are removed from consideration.
  • Austin's Assent---Select one game. This game is impervious to all rebuttal and added to the top ten list.
  • Ten Game Rule---A game, select at random, will be marked. The marked game is added to the top ten list.
  • Good Game Declaration---All games currently under deliberation are now considered a 10/10.
  • Witcher's Exception---A game, decided by consensus, is added to the top ten list at another game's expense.
  • Flowery Accusation---Select one game. Gain a free rebuttal every time it is put up for consideration.
  • Saint's Row---Select a top game. Then select a new top game.
  • Strange Motion---Select a game from someone else's list. Remove it from consideration.
  • Waluigi's Dark Defense---Everyone selects a game. If only a single game is selected exactly twice, it is removed from consideration.
  • Columbo Stance---Select one game not currently considered or on the top ten list. Add it to considerations and then immediately remove it from considerations.
  • Alternation of Word---Free action: add one game to either the top ten list or considerations.
  • Compressed Considerations---Everyone selects one game. Now select of those five by consensus. Music optional.

Yup... Once they get funko pops, the GotY card game will no doubt be right around the corner.

The shooter's law is such a dumb one. There were barely any shooters selected last year unless you count like MGSV and splatoon.

It's definitely a toss-up between Doom and Hitman, Overwatch looks like a solid 3rd place.
