You don't have to say he's a great guy if you can't stand him. We don't have to be objective about people here, only about games. I think I'm the only person on the internet who can't stand Austin Walker, but you don't see me going around claiming that he's still a great guy. I'm liberated, see?
I don't think you know what objective means.

Inside's theme is "mediocre games can be popular if they are pretty."

I don't think Inside is good because it's "pretty". It's meticulously crafted and expertly designed with such a strong atmosphere to it and wonderful animation with some neat puzzles that for the most part are logic based rather than 1+1=4. I mean, I get that some may not feel the game and it doesn't click with them, however, INSIDE is anything but mediocre.

Alex is without a doubt number 1 is wasting everyone's time during these deliberations.

I completely disagree, I'd much rather somebody actually put time into saying why they think these other games are good (even if they aren't going to win a category) than bring no debate at all like Dan.

Jeff's going to explode during best game, he's let it go where Brad has not thus far, he's building up to destroy everyone else in the room. "Fuck Inside".

I don't see Jeff having any reason to push hard to get Inside completely cut out of the top 10. His top picks (Doom, Titanfall 2, Witness) seem guaranteed to be in the upper half of the list somewhere and he doesn't traditionally give a shit about the rest from that point.

I don't think you know what objective means.

I disagree with your assessment. Also, I'm confused about whether you're responding to my joke response with your own joke response. The suspense is killing me.

Alex is the absolute best part of the deliberations this year. If he didn't push for Palmer Luckey as the Hottest Mess, I honestly would have been done with this site.

Are you kidding? Taking 30 seconds to give a quick nod to a game that he knows he won't get support for but wants to recognize the merits of anyway since he has the ear of thousands(?) of people is fucking up your Christmas? Really? I'm glad every time that he does it, just to give a little bit of spotlight to some good games, and even better if any of the devs hear that, it probably makes 'em feel pretty good.

Oh no, I just really loved the way he said that as both
Titanfall moments were cut,
Jeff tends to really push the games he likes way, way up the list even without support, he got Advanced Warfare way the fuck up there in 2014. In this case I can see him pushing Titanfall for top 3.

Yeah. We all know Doom is taking every category, so imagine if there was no discussion to get there.

Other than the song during the title screen and prompto singing the Final fantasy jingle I don't remember the OST of FFXV at all.

Final fantasy osts are generally really forgettable to me though.

I double-checked the award lists to find evidence to contradict you, but goddamn, Doom has been a runner-up in a ton of categories. I love the game and agree with its placement in most of those spots, but I have a newfound appreciation for why so many people have been complaining about it here.

are you really saying that alex talking about a game he likes on a podcast/video that spans multiple hours where a room of grown men debate their favorite video game moment is a waste of time?

How spoiler-y is the talk around Doom in Best Moment (if at all)? I got the game a few days ago and I'm still super early on.

Yesterday, I suggested they split music into Original Scores and Licensed Music. I think it should go further than that now. Basically: Best Music- Original (Orchestral), Best Music- Original (Electronic/Synth/Rock/Other), Best Music- (Licensed/Pre-Existing).

Best music technical and best music artistic.

The atmosphere and art are outstanding, but the puzzles being logic based isn't really enough at this point. "1+1=4" puzzles havent been a big thing in the genre in years and the puzzles in Inside I just didn't find very good. I also continue to dislike the way their games control. It was definitely a mediocre game for me, when you make a puzzle platformer and neither the puzzle nor the platformer is particularly good...

I was, sorry. I blame it being 2am here for it not being clear ^_^'

It's a great game, one of the best of the year, it's just boring that it's always Doom. And by that I mean these things are better when there is discussion and people convincing others of their view on a game rather than "we all agree Doom is here right? Ok, now lets sift through the shit.". It's like, it's a good game but can't there be more of a race? Like the stuff with Mario Maker and MGSV, where it wasn't just "Mario Maker wins right? Ok.", they had to argue and convince others to get it there and you had someone like Dan fighting against MGS.

The good puzzles in Inside are the ones defending those little yellow generator things you can break for achievements.

Uncharted epilogue didn't get the discussion it deserved -- Brad in particular has said "it's another one of those" in reference to anything in that game too many times, where it doesn't make sense (best looking). If he uses that point of critique again in Best Story I'm going to be a touch annoyed. I was surprised to see it on his personal list, honestly.

Man, Limbo must be absolute shit to you then if INSIDE is mediocre because the game controls and feels way better than Limbo ever did.

I think you're confusing it with Abzu.

ABZU is good but not great. Journey is great though. However, I commend Drew on painting the scene when he talked about the soundtrack, which is also pretty good. You could definitely see the passion he has for that game.

I feel like I'm the only one who does not like Mass effect 2.

The characters are good but the main story is really unengaging and the combat/encounter design is just such a goddamn chore.

Deliberations have been a little boring this year. I commend Alex for stepping up, but it needs another person who is able to formulate an argument and not roll over immediately. Jeff and Brad have a way of dominating the discussion. It makes me miss Austin and Patrick.

Agreed. Naughty Dog isn't being judged against the other competition, but against their previous works. Brad's best looking knock on Uncharted 4 is hilarious, "They've been making Uncharted games for almost 10 years now, it's just the best looking one of those." What about DICE and Battlefield? id and DOOM? They've been making those games for even longer.

I can understand the fatigue someone might have for the series, but the reasons for not considering it are kinda dumb when you could leverage the same argument against it's competition.

Inside shows that every one has different tastes in what is 'good'. I thought it was a short flawless fluid little gem. Others say mediocre. Its like when Jeff says Red Dead Redemption is a bad game. He could not be more wrong. Its also like the praise Mass Effect 2 gets when the best game in that series is the first one. Opinions :D

Abzu is a walking simulator but underwater. Not my kind of game either really. And I loved Journey. Removing the platforming and not really replacing it with anything of note does not make for a fun game.

At the time I'd have rated Limbo at the same place I rate Inside now, maybe a little higher because it felt a bit more origimal. I'm sure you'd be right if I replayed Limbo though.

Mass Effect 2's entire story is "ASSEMBLE YOUR CREW .... Oh half of them died." I was way into the larger story and universe of ME1 and 2 hardly dealt with that at all and felt so small-scope in comparison. Completely turned me off the franchise. The response to ME3 makes me think it was for the best.

I don't play a ton of RPGs so I guess that's why I enjoyed ME2. The best part about it though were the crew side missions for me, it really added to the whole game about being in a tight group of people who you cared for.

no, ME 2 basically stripped everything i liked about ME out of the series. it had fun shooting corridors though, i guess.

Is it the
8 foot tall robot controlled by a 200 year old genius or whatever it was they talked about during best new character?

No. I don't think it's actually that big a deal, although I never played old Doom, and it's a nostalgia / call-back sort of thing. So maybe skip it if you have reverence for that old game.

Mass Effect 2 has zero to do with the first games story - you are right to feel underwhelmed. The praise ME2 gets is baffling - as if no one cares that it makes no sense story wise and does nothing at all to continue the first games story. That fucking human Reaper at the end was embarrassing.

The moment they fought over for Inside isn't even my favorite sequence in Inside.

The shockwave area is. For a long time you are wondering what that noise and shaking is, and you walk outside to see shockwaves going off. The sound/music combo there is amazing, and the first time you die there you wont forget it.

Agreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed 100%. That area made me question what the world of Inside was more than any other.

I think Jeff sacrificed
Superhot
moments for
Titanfall 2
and felt like he was tricked when neither made top 3.

I have to play the Mass Effect series.

I feel like I need to give that game another shot. Everyone (that played it) seems pretty hot on it, and it should be something I liked but... IDK. Maybe I missed something.

I think a lot of the problem is there isn't a ton of games all of them (or a lot of them) played so half of them have to defer whenever a specific game is brought up. This year was packed.

I should be fine then... I have zero reverence for the old game(s). Thanks!

What ME2 lacked in the main story, it made up for in characters and their loyalty missions. Except Jacob. He's just boring.
