Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Take a shot every time Alex just adds something because he wanted to mention it.

I honestly don't see what the problem here is. You're listening to three hour+ podcasts on which people talk about video games, but you get mad when someone decides to talk about a video game on those podcasts?

Abzu is a walking simulator but underwater. Not my kind of game either really. And I loved Journey. Removing the platforming and not really replacing it with anything of note does not make for a fun game

I finally bought it for the cheap on the current steam sale and, after putting around an hour in it, find myself very disappointed to agree. Even aside from the game mechanics, Journey felt like it was consistently building towards something, with environments/music that evoked different emotions as the game progressed. By contrast, Abzu just feels like I'm just running the same gameloop repeatedly with different fish (let me use the term generally here aquatic knights, I know that many of the creatures are not actually "fish"). The sliding/flying/whatever sequences felt powerful and core in Journey, but the similar thing in Abzu just feels like a cheap, failed attempt to capture the same magic. I keep hoping I'll hit a point where something will change significantly enough to make me feel like there's some hint of the emotional progression of its predecessor...

What ME2 lacked in the main story, it made up for in characters and their loyalty missions. Except Jacob. He's just boring.

I am not saying its a bad game but once you are done with it and play 3 you realise it did nothing at all for the story. Nothing. So what was the point of it? Why did it exist? Its an okay stand alone game for sure but after 1 I was hoping for more.

Still without luck
Alex is without a doubt the only guy who adds anything to the podcasts this year.

I completely agree, yet I still feel like he's bringing up and cutting games even he doesn't care about that much.
Mass Effect 2 has zero to do with the first games story - you are right to feel underwhelmed. The praise ME2 gets is baffling - as if no one cares that it makes no sense story wise and does nothing at all to continue the first games story. That fucking human Reaper at the end was embarrassing.

Did they even explain why there were no other reapers designed after the species goop from which they are made? It's just the one skull face reaper and leviathan reapers.

I feel like I need to give that game another shot. Everyone (that played it) seems pretty hot on it, and it should be something I liked but... IDK. Maybe I missed something.

It's hard not to think about Journey when playing it. I love the game but not as much as I did Journey. Journey's impact is definitely much stronger than ABZU but ABZU is also a beautiful game with a great score and overall just extremely relaxing as well as pleasant to play(I love meditating while looking up fish names and then reading about them). I'm glad it exists.

I appreciate Alex giving props to certain games that would otherwise be thrown under the bus, but holy shit, stop with the "I've said my piece." Find a new phrase, PLEASE.

Yeah I'm all about Alex and occasionally Jason just popping in to shout out some mostly-ignored game. I prefer some name-checks on things I might like vs more talking about Doom.

Antiwhippy

the holder of the trombone
I listen to these things to hear the duders hesh out their thoughts, so I don't really need them to talk about games in the context of getting it on a list.

Not that I am aware of. It was and is as stupid as it appears to be. The promise of a Black Swan Event was thrown away with ME2. Yo remember Cerberus - you killed a lot of them because they were 'evil'. Yo you die 3 secs in and are reborn exactly the same 2 secs later - why? What interesting thing are you saying Bioware?? Oh nothing right I got you. Hey a human shaped Reaper sounds cool so lets do that. The squandering of the story from 1 still bums me out lol

It gives you reasons to care about the made up world the other nonsense is happening in.

Jeff's a very "Have his cake and eat it too" kinda fella when it comes to these discussions. You heard what he said on best moments -- "It SHOULD be the Witness and these 2 TitanFall 2 picks" -- By all accounts, Witness should suffice as one of his picks, but unlike maybe some of the more timid staff he isn't willing to concede the choices he has a burning passion for. Vinny's point struck a nice cord, in that the way Jeff felt about Inside is how he felt about the Witness, but can reconcile the differences to the greater majority.

Some part of me wishes they stopped this approach and did everything in reverse -- Talk about the CLEAR unanimous choice first then start whittling the smaller cuts. Like, when the entire table doesn't mention one game at all for the entire category discussion (whether it be Doom or Hitman or some other obvious contender), it simply becomes a lot of waffling to get to the clear-cut answer.

That's why you get so many 'I just wanted to say my piece"s or "It can't hang"s.

I already cared about the crew in the first game. I cared about the story. Nothing that transpired in ME2 added to my caring in the slightest. How can it if they can all die? They can, story wise, have no impact whatsoever going forward. Like I said its not a bad game but they dropped the ball hard story wise for me. Just dropped it like it was poison.

I appreciate that he gives props to games that wont win

Seems like he's played the broadest assortment of games this year for sure.

I also appreciated him going to bat for Trico and being able to articulate what works about NMS instead of regurgitating the same old talking points.

Jeff's final "fuck Inside" as he lost that battle did make me laugh.

It's good that everyone is realizing the virtues of Alex. I said before this week that his 12 hour stream will give rise to a new era of Alex and here we are. Without Austin or Patrick there, Alex is now the one willing to talk most about these video games.

The giant human reaper thing was particularly galling because there was an obvious better alternative.
If you want to say that the Reapers are trying to incorporate humanity to beat Shepard, they should have assimilated whoever you chose to sacrifice in ME1. Facing off against an angry, betrayed Ashley or Kaiden would have made that decision have more weight and would have instantly created a new quality villian.

But nooooo, let's just use this huge dumb fucking robot, anything to avoid acknowledging ME1 in a meaningful way.

Anything that tied it into ME1 would have been welcome. Anything. I get the feeling they wrote ME1 and then thought - we have no clue how to continue this. By 3 and its conclusion you can see they never did figure it out. I am so tentative about ME:Andromeda.

That just didn't do anything for me at all

That and "played it for a while and was just like, I'm good"

If Doom's a lock, might not be but probably is, it's going to be a battle royal for who gets the 2nd-4th with Inside Hitman Superhot Overwatch and Titanfall 2 Witness. Jeff might struggle getting TF2 up there.

Just finished Day 4 podcast... Holy shit at Dan never finding an
enviromental puzzle
on The Witness. There are like a hundred of them iirc. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE

Yeah, I really don't think they're meant to be an endgame thing. They should really be something you discover in the first third of the game.

Well they did lose (or get rid of?) the lead writer after Mass Effect 1, so that probably makes sense.

I'm with you here honestly, except that I would go further in saying that I was also extremely disappointed that Mass Effect 2 just completely got rid of all of the RPG combat in exchange for some mediocre third person shooting. I actually much prefer the ability to build up a character and play the way I wanted to play by the end of ME1. If I wanted a one shot mega damage shotgun that instantly overheated, I could do that. In ME2 it became generico shooter 101 with reload clips and all of the other bullshit that other games did much better.

What I'm saying here is, while I didn't think it was a bad game, I still found Mass Effect 2 to be one of the most disappointing games of all time since I loved part 1 so much.

The right best moment won (at least out of those discussed, maybe for the whole year) but I don't think there was a single word mentioned at all for even one of the many amazing moments from
The Last Guardian!

All this ME1 talk reminds me that no villain in that universe topped Saren.

Alex was the only one who played that game and he didn't finish it during that time. But yes, you're correct, that game has moments and not just a moment.

What if Jeff ditches Titanfall and uses Doom's poor multiplayer to argue for The Witness at #1.

Vinny's face. He might never come back to the west coast.

It's great to scan through some categories of old awards to get a feel for the times

I agree completely. Mass Effect 1 is one of very favourite games. ME2 was not a bad game but a huge huge bummer. I get the urge to replay ME1 all the time but then I remember ME2 and ME3. The love ME2 gets especially makes me think we just won't get a game like the first one again. I fucking love ME1 lol
