Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Ditto. Listened to it this morning in the way to work and surprised by that exchange. It felt completely off.

I think he felt tricked into dropping Superhot for the Titanfall stuff only to lose both.

And also was just (understandably) struggling to understand how on earth Inside was even in contention.

Jeff putting his foot down is how Mario Maker won GotY in 2015.

Still nuts how he didn't do that with Saint Row 3.

Only reason I think Ryan didn't go forward with it was he just wanted to go home.

We're trying.

I'm unsure about whether Inside or Shenmue is the worse game, they're both pretty bad.

I'd certainly rather play Shenmue. Even in 2016.

Yeah, totally agree. Probably playing the long game and thinking no-one could have liked Inside that much and it backfired. Still, Jeff fought the good fight and I'm amazed Inside had any impact at all to be honest.

I think Brad will insist that UC4 makes the list for bullshit reasons, maybe "it just feels wrong to not have it on this list."

Like Nathan Drake when you let go of X, I don't think it hangs.

Doom
Hitman
Overwatch
The Witness
Inside
Superhot
Titanfall 2
Overcooked
Rez Infinite
Gears 4
Abzu
Picross 3d: Round 2

If you gave me both games and said I had to play through one of them before I could play any other game again...I'd probably go for Inside because at least it's shorter and doesn't control quite as poorly as Shenmue does.

But I'd also possible consider a new hobby.

I'd be comfortable taking off Inside for Uncharted 4, but that's it. Hey, I'm learning how to debate GOTY

You can bang through Inside in like, 2 hours and it's at least pretty to look at up until the last 5 minutes.

Those bottom 3 seem a bit forced. I'm also going to be sad when Inside inevitably makes the list despite there being numerous better games this year.
If Austin was here, maybe Stellaris would make it :(

Good point, I've had worse 2 hours of my life than Inside. I'll just sing a song in my head while the boredom sets in.

I didn't like either one, but I would put UC4 on the list over Inside, no doubt. At least UC4 had good voice acting, a decent story and an ending.

Listening to Brad be all hohum on Uncharted 4 makes me wonder if the Brad of today would strong arm Uncharted 2 to victory over Batman: AA like he did way back in 2009.

And jeez I've been listening to Giant Bomb podcasts for a long time.

So I bought Doom yesterday due to the GB hype. How long will the campaign take me? Free time is at a premium right now and Firewatch which I also picked up might be easier to fit in (and also a more relaxed experience).

Yeah, we're not far off from the 10 Year Anniversary GOTY Specialtacular.

I don't know how hard they will fight for it, but Drew and Dan loved Picross.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
As much as they like Doom I'm surprised it didn't get more than a fraction of the stream time that Hitman did.

That's an unfit comparison. Hitman is a chaos sandbox where every run can defy expectations and deliver entirely unexpected results. Crew on the couch have involvement by offering suggestions. It's a very effective game for streams due to the surprises and its ability to showcase player personality in a surprisingly visual manner.

What would they stream on Doom? Campaign spoilers? Multiplayer none of them enjoys?

Doom is fantastic but overall stream time isn't a measuring tool for satisfaction with an experience.

I mean, if you just put it on normal or easy and don't go for any secrets you could probably get it done in 10 hours?

Firewatch is much quicker, I finished it in two sittings and could have probably done it in one. I'd save that for a palate cleanser after Doom.

The gaming landscape was a very different place. The fact that they are relatively wishy washy on the recent iterations of both of those games should make that obvious.

Also, Giant Bomb threads never disappoint with the odd and downright absurd projection that goes on in them.

I'd think that it's safe to assume that Jeff just felt really passionate about his love of Titanfall 2, and dislike of Inside, that he would've gone to bat in the same way regardless of his position in the company. Brad has historically done his share of this on these podcasts in a similar manner too. I'm not saying it's a great look either way, but they're just fucking human beings with opinions. Stop reading too much into every single exchange.

I'm not sure if I even want to touch on the accusations about Dan's political leanings. Some of you people in this thread seriously need to get your heads examined.

Jeff doesn't really have a pet game this year that he's going to slide onto the list, does he? Not one that no one else really played or cared about anyway.

They also tend to just play less FPS on the site in general with the exception of older stuff after TNT kinda proved that it's just not fun to watch.

thats because mario maker was the wrong choice.

only 2 guys had it in their personal top 10. MGS5 was their real GOTY by far.

everyone loved mgs5, only dan and jeff loved mario maker.

its not even a game, you had to make the levels yourself

come at me bro

This dude is correct. It's like if Photoshop or a big ole Lego box won goty
also come at me

Maybe something VR? Shame it is top games and not top things to get Google Earth on there.

But I think Doom loses a lot if you play it on easy or normal. I think the game is really well balanced on ultraviolence.

He's the one who feels strongest about Titanfall 2 and probably Gears 4 as well. So I could see those getting higher on the list based on him.

Also Rez.

I agree, I think it loses a lot if you don't explore the maps as well. But if you wanted to miss shit and miss the best parts of the encounters, then you could get it done in 10hrs.

Personally I'd set aside a good 16-18 hours for it, play it on Ultra-Violence, and really explore so that you can appreciate the level design.

The ending of Inside was good but after playing games like Flower, Journey, Abzu and Entwined (can't remember for sure if it is an example), it at the same time felt like
yet another 'power fantasy' ending. There was more to it that stopped it from just being a cliche but the structure is still a bit overdone.

Agreed, but Inside handled it in a more clever manner than any of those and more. But I am with you in thinking there is a fervor and overreaction to that moment that isn't really earned. Jeff is way too harsh on it, but I keep thinking the Internet is totally nuts for putting it on the lofty pedestal It has.

Wow, just got around to listening to the podcast and Jeff trying to put his foot down against Inside is the most awkward fucking moment in the history of Giant Bomb. How is it possible for one person to be so lacking in self awareness...

Like, that straight up exposed him as seeing everyone there as his employees and that he thinks his opinion is more important than theirs.

"I think the rest of the room is against you."

"Yes, but I don't like it."

Anyone know which podcast this happened in? Thanks.

At no point did I ever perceive Jeff as being about to use the "I'm your boss" card. He just looked very passionate about Titanfall 2 and wanted it to have the Best Moment award. I completely understand, as I both love Titanfall 2 and didn't care at all about the ending of Inside.

Also, on the topic of Palmer Luckey, Jeff and Alex were the only two who went hard against him; the others were either silent or almost silent. You really shouldn't presume anything about their silence. I mean, if anything, Brad is the one who said "I don't know" as a response to Jeff saying "there is no hotter mess than white supremacy". But even then, Brad was joking and clearly doesn't endorse white supremacy. After all, remember that he is the one who had to explain to a clueless Dan what white privilege was on the bombcast some time ago, while trying not to lose his shit.

What, Jeff power tripping and silently threatening to use his position as boss of Giant Bomb to make people do what he says?

That doesn't happen in any podcast.

Chumley is referring to Day 4 tho, he just added a bunch of fantasy shit to Jeff feeling strongly about something and arguing hard for it.

I understand Jeff's indignation but sometimes you have to concede your point when you are clearly outvoted. I thought Brad deciding not to take a vote on it was the more diplomatic approach. Jeff just did not want to back down. It just came off as though his opinion trumps everyone else. That said, the entire TF2 argument was framed incorrectly. Effects and Cause was the moment/level that needed to be highlighted. That level is this gens All Ghillied Up. Enough said. End of the conversation. I love DOOM and it is my GOTY but there was nothing in that game by itself that was as memorable as Effects and Cause.

Yup, he would never do that. Jeff is a good guy. He's pretty passionate about TF2 and since he didn't like Inside, it's understandable he doesn't want it in top 3.

We still talking about this Jeff Pulling Rank nonsense?

It's how this thread works. All the actual discussion is while people are listening to/have just finished listening to the deliberations. Then it's just crazy conspiracy theories and drive-by posts about games we didn't like
fuck Inside.

I liked Inside and what it did. It's not the best game of the year by any stretch, but I'm completely glad I played it and did so in one sitting. It had a lot of neat ideas and areas that were tweaked or changed from start to finish that kept me interested. It also helped I was completely sold on the world itself from the start. Weird and dystopian and bleak and void of any shred of humanity.

I can see why some might not like it for its lack of gameplay or when the reveal happens, but beyond that I feel it nails most everything else outside of the
issues with the underwater girl and what happens to you when she catches you.

I guarantee the first conversation about Persona 5 will entail Jeff going, "I expected to like it more."

Exact reaction I expect. Really, I only expect it being considered part of a joke similar to Nitroplus Blasters and then Jason gushing over it for weeks while the rest of the crew is like "..."
