Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

I think the only mark against Hitman really is the god-awful level in Colorado. Is part of the full package, it's dogshit.

I'll be pissed if Hitman wins over Doom. Hitman seems cool but it has a serious case of "the giant bomb effect". Its fun for them to stream and its fun for people to watch but is it really THAT fun for the average joe who just plays games by himself?

Mario Maker won last year because of this and I think it misrepresented the game.

I haven't had more fun with a single player game in a long time.

The idea hitman is only fun for streamers is insane. I can see the aspect of Mario Maker being more fun for creators that have a lot of followers, but even that game is fun for people who just like playing mario, I didn't even really care for making levels.

But yeah. I can see the Mario Maker point, but hitman? Yeah no.

Yeah, people loved the old Hitman games for similar reasons and that was long people streamed themselves playing. Not everyone will love it as much, but it's not like it's made for Youtube/Twitch reactions, that's BS.

My favorite moments from Day 3.

how can you get pissed at a game you've never played and are making (wrong) assumptions of

but the better question is

how can you get pissed at a websites game of the year awards

Wow, I can't believe Dan never figured out the Witness environmental puzzles. I actually thought that wasn't really a big surprise. As soon as I saw the game let you go into "puzzle" view without being near an actual puzzle, I thought there would be some form of environmental puzzles. Then when I was in the town area I saw a very clear line and did the puzzle, and thought "huh, that's cool". I didn't realise people could go so far into the game without figuring that stuff out or even doing it accidentally.

How is it possible to still not know the facts after Alex lined them out for the table on the podcast? I have no doubt that Dan is aware of the facts and is opposed to Luckey, but he effectively took a neutral stance to the ears of casual podcast listeners by not even chiming in to say "Yeah, fuck him" like everyone else did (besides maybe Drew I think). That's all I'm saying. Suggesting he's still ignorant of politics to such an extreme degree here at the end of 2016 is incredibly damning.
Not chiming in is not a neutral stance. This is a video game podcast about video games, if Dan didn't feel the need to chime in during that discussion it's not damning at all. You are reading way too much into his silence and are accusing him of something based on nothing.

Similarly, when I found out that there are environmental puzzles, it was more of a "Huh, alright" than a mindblowing moment.

But I still had a cool experience with it, because the first few ones I found were super obvious, but then I came across one that vaguely looked like the correct shape, but seemed too subtle to be a real one. I still tried it for some reason and when it worked I literally said "What the fuck, I was just kidding" out loud.

To avoid any recency bias or appearing hyperbolic, I will merely say that Hitman is a contender for my Game of the Century alongside Portal and RDR. I've put more time into Hitman than The Witness and MGSV combined; the latter being a 2016 game for me. I hit the level cap on each map within a day or two of release, and yet I've spent this week doing dumb shit with the newest sniper rifle and explosive ducks. Christ, I once again killed everyone in
Colorado with pyrokinesis
(you heard me), because it's just fucking fun.

Not to mention the free holiday pack and continuing elusive targets; the post-release support has been absurdly good and makes a mockery of the F2P and DLC schemes we've grown accustomed to. And, yeah, as Austin said, this game is exceedingly watchable. I just binged on the elusive targets that Dan Teasdale did with his fiancé, and being able to watch their accelerated growth in a way that is both calculable and illustritive is so damn satisfying. They're neither idiots nor speedrunners; they're average Joe's having and making fun.

The game is a blast. Giant Bomb videos only scratch the surface of what's in that game.

What's the name of the guy sitting to the very left of screen in the week 4 video?

Been listening to the Bombcast for years but only just putting names to faces.

Did two lasers and went to the town area and was trying to do a puzzle that was way out of my depth for where I was in the game and got super frustrated and just started fucking around and
then accidentally did an environmental puzzle cause I was like "ha ha at this THIS one I can solve!
and had no idea it would actually solve and my mind was fucking blown up.

I could see Dan getting through the entire game without finding that, cause you have to reach beyond the artificial confines of the game and you can ignore the prompts to do that

Colorado is great, having an entirely hostile map to showcase that end of the game's mechanics is really neat.

I imagine it's fairly difficult if you're bad at the game, but given that even Brad could finish it I think it's pretty fairly balanced.

I'm entirely aware that this is the point of these videos, but it's still kinda weird hearing one of them going to bat for a game they haven't played.

Inside is this sci fi horror short story that had beautiful graphics and sound design and some really cool set pieces and moments. The idea that is pseudo intelectual in any way is, frankly, absurd.

I reinstalled Doom yesterday after all the talk on these podcasts and started the campaign in ultra violence (my first run was normal). The game still feels great but after Titanfall 2 (fuck diminutives) the movement sure feels a bit lacking. I still liked the first mission a ton and will keep playing if I manage the difficulty but yeah, Titanfall made a dent on it.

I don't like those mechanics. At all. Luckily the release structure means it's not locking my progress and I can ignore it, so that's neat

What the fuck happened in here?.

Fuck Colorado
in Hitman

anyone else feel like titans were the worst part of titanfall 2? they just felt really sluggish and not as much fun to play as just running and gunning as a pilot.

Sorry but you're crazy if you think Hitman isn't fun for the average player. I completely agree with you on Mario Maker, they had a way different experience with it then average players did but Hitman is not the same case at all. It is an incredibly fun game, iO nailed it.

Thumper was R-O-B-B-E-D of best music

Nah. Individually listening to the tracks, yes, the music is pretty great. But in the context of the game hearing the same bits over an over (because they stretch the soundtrack out to fit all the levels the stage has) gets grating in a really particular way. Especially when you have trouble on a section.

That's certainly an opinion that players have, it's why there are pilot only modes, but I've found those to be boring as fuck. There's some element to the Titans being on the field that make the game much more warzone-feeling and interesting.

I wonder if Persona 5 can win best game, best music and best style next year.

thats because mario maker was the wrong choice.

only 2 guys had it in their personal top 10. MGS5 was their real GOTY by far.

everyone loved mgs5, only dan and jeff loved mario maker.

its not even a game, you had to make the levels yourself

come at me bro

Everything checks out here.

Wow, just got around to listening to the podcast and Jeff trying to put his foot down against Inside is the most awkward fucking moment in the history of Giant Bomb. How is it possible for one person to be so lacking in self awareness...

Like, that straight up exposed him as seeing everyone there as his employees and that he thinks his opinion is more important than theirs.

"I think the rest of the room is against you."

"Yes, but I don't like it."

Jeff putting his foot down is how Mario Maker won GotY in 2015.

This thread is making a late charge for "Worst Giant Bomb Gaming thread of 2016", but the Shenmue Endurance Run thread is still standing tall.

Keep it going guys.

Based on individual top 10s they like it less than Bloodborne which didn't make the collective top 10 last year, so that's a safe bet.

I think Brad will insist that UC4 makes the list for bullshit reasons, maybe "it just feels wrong to not have it on this list."

Not to mention this is GIANTBOMBS game of the year. If it wins because that's the game they, GIANTBOMB, had the most fun with so be it. They are not picking what is objectively the game of the year, they are picking the sites.

Pretty much. The entire map is hostile!..except not really because as soon as you get any disguise you can access like 80% of the map freely, and compared to the other maps there's actually few people that can see through disguises or they're placed so you can just go around them.

Feel like Mankind Divided got totally overlooked for best soundtrack to be honest. There's a ton of great ambient themes in there.

Thanks to the group for putting me on Trackmania Turbo and Brigador, awesome soundtracks.

DOOM - Gunz, Demonz, Metalz, US-American developers, Giant BOMB

Hitman - Ryckert: "What is a Denmark?"

Follo the money.

We're trying.

I'm unsure about whether Inside or Shenmue is the worse game, they're both pretty bad.

Ditto. Listened to it this morning in the way to work and surprised by that exchange. It felt completely off.

That's only because he'll want it for most disappointing too so it can have more awards.

What, now suddenly a game can't be the best game of the year and also the most disappointing because it doesn't have Junes?

Oh, spoilers.

We're trying.

They're both technical marvels for their time but only one lets you collect Sonic the Hedgehog gacha
