Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

My first new PC in nearly 9 years is here. I have to transfer like 2TB of files. It's raining and nasty outside. Seems to me like this is the perfect day for GOTY listening and Brad Extra Lifing.

Giant Bomb has failed me.

Maybe I should play more
of Hitman,
but the hours I've put into it have not grabbed me. Seemed
extremely repetitive and like I was just waiting around for shit to happen. Feels like I lost something by not experiencing its episodic nature.

Vinny speaking some truths in best story about
Uncharted 4 and Firewatch

Hearing people say
"They pulled together all those plot threads so well" is making me actually angry.

Agreed on the latter part.

LOL yup. I think the ending is about the best we could have expected, but even that is still disappointing considering the first two games. And well...how some of the character stories were handled was fairly bad.

None of the 4 games their discussion right now on my podcast are in my Top 3 of the year so :lol

Vinny is so close to getting things right though about a few things in Best Story.

I keep thinking he'll start to tear down his own recommendation and kinda say "Nah guys, maybe I really made a mistake here because..." It just never quite gets there outside of
the way it doesn't really stick the landing

haven't spoiled myself yet but people seem pretty happy with their #1 this year which is fucking weird to me.

It was the game that took over the entire site, so it feels right. The worst was 2011, when Ryan turned heel on Saints Row:The Third, even though it was his own game of the year, because he felt Skyrim was a more "game of the year" type of game

No I agree with Jeff. The game doesn't play fair. You can't make a game with a string of "OMG ISNT THAT SO FUCKING WEIRD AND CRAZY?!?" moments without any explanation. Then you're just fishing for Best Moment noms and YouTube highlights.

I vehemently disagree. Inside is a cohesive, expertly crafted package in which everything sort of feeds off of itself - there is nothing out of place or "unfair" as it pertains to achieving the mood, atmosphere, and intrigue the creators obviously wanted to portray. Yes there are a few shocking moments, but they aren't done without regards to every other part of that game - it all fits together, even with the sort of underlying ambiguity that remains even after multiple playthroughs. This is a game that was years in the making and was meticulously crafted in every area with a specific intent and purpose - to suggest that it is "fishing" for best moments or something like that is an insanely skewed and shallow view of the game IMO.

I've been playing it with no assists. Hello and welcome to the world's most boring, dullest and basic-ass assassinations.

Funny how some people are all like "IF YER PLAYING IT WIF OPPORTUNITIES ON U DOIN IT RONG" then others in the OT say the complete opposite.

I had 100 times more fun playing MGSV. Hell, just Ground Zeroes.

Next time I try the game out, I'm enabling those things.

I can't believe they actually made the right call for GOTY.
Also, I loled so hard when Vinny shamefully brought up Doom for story of the year. You could feel the guilt in his voice.

I don't know if they have or not but a couple characters all but say what's happening. It's not just some fan theory from piecing together random things.

Maybe not fan fiction but some serious digging and piecing together is required to come to that conclusion. I just beat the game a few weeks ago, never saw the body as I opted to save the cultists, but based on the side missions and dialog it sounds plausible. Overall as far as the way the main story goes, it was severely lacking compared to the side quests which were so much more compelling and interesting.

I just don't think it does anything to earn the final sequence. It's such a shocking spectacle and so completely goofy that the game needed to do something in order to make it feel it had a place in this world but it doesn't and instead the last five minutes are just this goofy sequence with ZERO payoff. I get the metaphor and I get why it happens but it's completely unearned.

Beyond that, the actual puzzle part of this game is mostly bland. The best part about it is the art which is magnificent but not enough on it's own to make it worth remembering at all.

Inside is probably one of the most disappointing games of the year for me. LIMBO wasn't great, but it was good enough to make me say "I really wanna see what Playdead does again" and it turns out what Playdead does again is kinda the same shit with more technical prowess and a worse story.

Oh and regarding jeff's list, I just want to chime in and say that Superhot is overrated tripe. A intriguing gimmick that never really justified having a complete done around it.

100% agree, good game jam game but badly executed game game.

Real surprised at the end of the best story bit:
ZTD made it as far as it did and only didn't make the list because of Vinny. Doom again is such a bad choice for story. I love Doom. It's my game of the year, but man...there are way better stories out there this year. Way better.

It is just a strung together set of set pieces, but each of those pieces work so well that it makes the game. It's bigger than the sum of its parts, not less because of it.

I didn't choose the vault option, so I missed that part, but many of the side quests bring up the possibility and the Sarif one pretty much lays it all out there.

Doom being mentioned for best character and best story is the kind of stupid Giant Bomb sometimes brings that's just a bit much for me.

Well you're just doing life wrong in general then.

GotY.
I did not expect that outcome at all. Wowser. Where did it all go wrong for Doom?!

But man... that best story decision is all kinds of whack. I'm afraid to hear how they arrived at it.

The way they can't seem to piece together firewatch's second half is emblematic of everything I was annoyed with in the game. get fucked firewatch

Just got to the best story part and
TLG IS NO WHERE TO BE SEEN.
While it is not surprising that it's not there, it still kind of stings because I feel that game has the best story of this year by a mile. Gives you just enough information and backstory while also being at the right level of ambiguity.

I mean the point is that you seek out those opportunities naturally by exploring and listening instead of following objective markers.

Alex didn't finish it prior to the GotY discussion and he was the only one on the crew who did play it to completion. Basically it got screwed because of its release date.
I have yet to play it, but I'm super excited to start.

Doom's story is good for what it is. Its not a compelling narrative but they make a reasonable story out of thin air from the Doom 1/2 plot.

Also the Doomguy is so much of a crusading arbiter that the Demons wrote a mythos around him

Brad was a really good moderator for this year's GOTY. Almost felt like he didn't have a super strong opinion for most of the picks.

Yeah, I know which is why I mentioned that I'm not surprised to not see it there.

It's fine, but it doesn't really carry through on the promise of the opening sequence. Too many boring segments where people spout exposition at you. And the cliffhanger ending is kind of lame.

This. A lot of the appreciation does stem from familiarity with the opaque and peripheral 'story' elements of the older Doom games. The fact this reboot makes such broad and wonderful referential treatment to those classics while spooling it tightly into the core lore narrative is well...I would probably rank it in my list too.

I'm at best story and honestly
I don't understand Doom being considered Top 3 at all. It is one of my favorite games this year but not because of the story.

Im not saying it should win (mafia 3 should but I dont think anyone but Alex finished that) and i havent finished the section yet

but the "story" of Doom adds a lot to the game to me, the fact that its the same Doomguy from Doom 1 and 2 is hilarious.

And the characters in the game are very predictable in a way. Drew calling the Doom Guy compelling is very weird to me.

MUnited83

For you.
Because it's no where near as good of a game as some of the others on that list. The whole enjoyment of the game comes from watching other people fuck up and attempt to work their way out of situations. Not because the actual stealth mechanics are any good. That's not to say it's a bad game, it's just not a game I would look back as something that stood out in any way shape or form. Other games on that list have had much more impact or executed on their ideas much better than the number one choice.
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Better fucking stealth game in years, much better than what MGSV ended up being. HITMAN is easily and by far the greatest game released in 2016.

Worst game is totally Jason and Drew's bag because they are about the only ones to play much and get into games outside of the more popular games the rest of crew seem to gravitate to.

Even having played all of the Zero Escape games, Vinny's explanation of Zero Time Dilemma was amazing.

It at least was accurate.
