Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

I fear I may have just committed one of my patented over-shares.

Just say "this is the internet, don't believe everything you read" and then never post in this thread again. People will forget! I swear!

I've seen a lot of SimCity, and it's pretty damn cool. Definitely not perfect, but I think people just need to wrap their head around the idea that the size limitations make it more of a game, and working within that can actually be a lot of fun. It definitely encourages building lots of cities and experimenting, not trying to create a single megalopolis that can do everything.

Doesn't not being able to save and reload kill a lot of that experimentation?

Not the best written thing I've seen, much less from a person paid to write, but I can appreciate the sentiment. I'm certainly in no position to judge. I drive around on weekends alone listening to podcasts so I can pretend I have friends.

You are welcome to come over for Monday Night Raw.

No manual saves in a SimCity game? If their servers make a boo boo, I don't have access to my singleplayer game?

They can fuck right off. Sorry developers, even if your game is great I can't support this surrounding shit with my wallet.

The real fun will be when they shut the servers down in 15 months.

Jesus. I wish I knew how to drive.

As much as I enjoy shitting on EA, Sim City is not an annualised sports franchise, so the servers should be safe for some time.

Ugh. SimCity. I feel like it was rushed at some point. Too many compromises and bugs for how elaborate and ambitious the simulation was done. It seems like they wanted something grander and got smack by the EA reality stick.

I see potential in organized regional play but it should have been something better.

I watch itnon the roku ap on my nexus 7 and the low quality is artifacted to hell and back, while the high option is watchable.

Such a huge discrepancy between the 2 files too. 170 mbs for low and 910 mbs for high.

Low (640x360 @ 800 Kbps)
High (1280x720 @ 1.8Mbps)
HD (1280x720 @ 4.0 Mbps)

They're not going to look great because they're all one pass encoded. While faster, it won't look as nice as nice as a two pass encode. They all look fine to me.

Etrian Odyssey 4 is on the docket for QL tomorrow; I wonder if Kessler's back to do it like last time?

I'm really surprised they're even bothering to quick look it. The last one with Matt didn't even go past the first floor and he seemed like the only one half-interested in the series.

Patrick trying it out makes sense, hopefully he's spent some time with it and the quick look isn't just going over stuff in the first land.

They may not be, but the attitude and visual design of this game are practically a carbon copy of what RedLynx has done on the 360. As we said in the video, if the legal standard for infringement is "creating confusion in the marketplace" (I don't know that it is), you could likely make a convincing argument for infringement here. I guarantee a casual observer who's only passingly familiar with RedLynx's games would look at screenshots of this and assume it's from the same people.

Hey Brad,

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but please, next time you find yourself thinking "could these game developers sue those other game developers?", just please slap yourself in the face as hard as you can to shake those awful thoughts off. Trust me, nobody wants games to go down that path. If you don't trust me go read an RMS essay on the subject and I'm sure he'll agree.

He's posted a bit about it on twitter and his tumblr. He says he gave it a fair shake, can see the appeal but doesn't have the time to go down that rabbit hole. I wouldn't expect any in-depth discussion about optimal lineups, or him being aware that subclassing exists. I'm glad that it's getting covered though, the EO series fills a gap that no other current games do.

So huh..not to add oil to the fire but there's a new Sessler Something video up and he talks about the game he was raging about on Twitter this week-end.

He can't name it but he received it on friday and the embargo is up on thursday this week... Hmmm, so I guess it could be Sniper Ghost Warrior 2, God of War or Starcraft.

My bet is on GoW.

Telling someone to go read Stallman is probably not a good way to make them consider your argument seriously, the guy is off the deep end.

In general, I don't get why people continually jump to the conclusion that we endorse an idea or viewpoint just because we discuss it. It's just food for thought, dude. Regardless, even if Urban Trial isn't actionable, it sure is crass.

Blizzard doesn't send out games early, and even if they did, you couldn't play them.
