It depends really. Giantbomb has the pull and the infrastructure to grow. It's going to be harder when it's their part time gig. Also they're not getting final bosman right?

Simply finding remotely suitable office space in SF and, to a lesser extent NY, would be absurdly expensive. Not to mention the video equipment which I know nothing about, but whenever Drew mentions how much some essential piece of hardware costs, the price is always astronomical.

All twitch and youtube solo shows. Maybe some kind of big drives for a bllsl type of deal or E3 coverage. It'd be a very different GB.

So, yes, just like this. Probably with guys coming to each other's houses/apts to record joint videos.

Oh yeah, I think Drew or Jeff said that the equipment someone stole at E3 three(?) years ago was worth over $20k, and that's not close to everything they've got.

It's telling that the Gametrailers guys had $50k as the "get a studio" goal.

Depends on what you want to do. You really don't have to spend that much for streams and weekly podcasts, a few K at most for decent equipment which honestly isn't that much to get setup for this kind of gig professionally.

They don't even need to do what giantbomb does, such as on the fly feed switching. They might put on an air of of goofiness but giantbomb honestly has one of the better productions out there for internet live broadcast,

That also openes up its own isses.

- YT bitrate is still terrible in most cases.
- Many of GBs older content (Happy Hours) has stuff that would be instantly content ID / blocked
- Nintendo is going to Nintendo all over YT

1) Yes, but the GB stuff isn't that much better.
2) A definite problem.
3) Nintendo has agreements with larger entities to not fuck with their content.

Number 3 is the reason something like Gamespot or IGN can have game previews of Nintendo games and still monetize their YT channels.

I think Jeff has said that if they were starting out now they would probably use YT, but that he's at the same sceptical about relying on YT because you're at the mercy of Google and games publishers. At any rate they can't put Premium content on YT.

I think amazon's solutions are not THAT expensive anymore. But yeah generally, I can not estimate the cost of such a thing, but I think the pledge money is very low for EZ, especially if the "drop rate" strikes.

Amazon as a pure bandwidth and storage solution has gone down in price, but when you're dealing with streaming video internationally, you really need a proper video CDN like Akamai's - and they're still really expensive.

Yup, he did, but having your entire business at the mercy of Youtube's clandestine partner management is not a day-to-day stress I'd envy.

they use Akamai now, but it's more or less the same deal. it looks like 100tb of traffic would cost about $8k, which you can probably scale up (though I think most CDNs get cheaper per measurement as volume increases).

even if we went super low end on sub numbers, say 10k people at $3/mo, that's still $30k/mo just on subscription money. obviously that doesn't take into account salaries, equipment costs, storage costs, etc, but basically they're left with a pretty good amount of overhead after raw hosting costs, on sub money alone.

Giantbomb to exclusively stream through pornhub.

Premium just got a whole new meaning!

I'd believe it because 95% of the time I hear PornHub mentioned it's because they're doing some pathetic "look at me" publicity thing. I don't give a shit about what people in each state jack off to, and I certainly don't want to hear Coolio if he's not doing that one song off of Gangster's Paradise that had E-40 in it.

To be fair the canadian porn map was very informative.

Actually what people on patreon typically do is have a channel with unlisted YT videos where only the links are shared to backers. However it doesn't get around to the issue that some premium content will face, which is content id.

Tbf it's extremely easy to get around the premium wall too, but yeah, that's even easier :p

At least GB can monitor content and try to chase pirated lists, but the Patreon model is so bad if premium videos are the selling point - you can pledge, bookmark all the links, and rescind your pledge before the payment cycle; having never spent a penny.

For sure.

I dunno, people can do that, but stuff like this relies so much on passion I don't think it'll attract the people who would do what you're describing.

To be fair, you can kind of do a similar thing with GB videos by just bookmarking all of the raw mp4 URLs before your sub expires.

They do that shit because they can't advertise pretty much anywhere, and it's the one way for them to get their name out to the general public.

so how should we feel about how a lot of games press members end up being PR mouthpieces for game companies

it says a lot that many think Mitch Dyer's going to be Ubisoft or WB PR/CM

The same way I feel when I see a former sports professional become a talking head, sports critic or working for big sports league or organization. Good for them! Get paid! As long as they performed their jobs professionally on both "sides", there's no issue.

I'm glad that they stop pretending to be anything else, so it's a plus I guess.

I like when harmless stereotypes are reinforced. I can only imagine Quebecois porn to be people pleasuring themselves looking into a mirror.

It has more to do with the fact that most people outside of Montréal only speak French and want to understand what the girl is saying lol...

Doesn't have anything to do with ego, it's all about being ignorant rednecks.

I noticed recently that a lot of people (mostly Americans it seems) tend to waaayyy overestimate the level of patriotism/fervent separatists that we have here in Québec... It's really just a perfect case of vocal minority.

The vast majority of Québecers are not separatists and don't give a fuck about all that crap.

Whatever happened to the universal language of love?
