Giant Bombcast - 03/17/15

I'm interested to see Jason try to argue with Dan. I think MH is shit, wonder if he'll say anything to sway opinions.

I've played about 15 hours of the game and it was fucking boring, especially when I was already fighting the same monster, but with a different color.

Who cares anyway, Bloodborne is next week!

Jeff and Dan both alluded to playing something they couldn't talk about, hmmm I wonder what it could be?

I remember Jeff not enjoying the methodical pace of Souls combat I wonder If he'll be reviewing Bloodborne. It would be interesting to perpective from fans of the earlier games, and someone who didn't enjoy them.

I can't imagine it being someone other than Vinny or Brad taking the helm of Bloodborne. I would certainly be interested in hearing his opinions on it, if he plays it though.

Bloodborne reviews in general will be interesting. Do you get the Souls mega fan to do it? Or do you get the person who has never touched a souls game to do it?

Merit to both

This is the first Bombcast I've listened to for some reason :) It was fun!

Question: I get the impression that they kind of play dumb at a few spots. Ya know, like when people who don't quite know each other and talk about videogames at a party for some reason half-pretend that they don't know exactly what the details are regarding a bunch of games?

Like we don't all know that FFVersusXIII became FFXV? C'mooooon.

No, they play video game knowledge pretty straight and take a good amount of pride in their knowledge. Most of them have extensive knowledge of more retro stuff.

Dan plays dumb at life though.

Jeff doesn't pay a ton of attention to Final Fantasy. He obviously saw the E3 trailer where the Versus logo turned into a FFXV logo, but he also doesn't have FF on the brain enough that it's a thing he remembers.

More Jason on a regular basis please.

Yes please!

These days 40+hour games never get reviewed unless Rorie does it. So unless Rorie does it, I dont expect a BB review.

Axiom Verge?

I'd really like Dan to take a legitimate shot at something like toukiden. It does away with that "it's not an action game it's a hunting game" nonsense by making it an action game, and I think it's super fun. Definitely my favorite of the monster hunter clones. Still has the monster hunter DNA but stands on its own IMO

Rorie's non-review of Dark Souls was better than most scored reviews. Plus the Quick Look has one of the funniest moments out of their entire catalog of hilarious moments. I'm all for it.

Square software is such an insular clusterfuck at this point that unless you are a fan of the series it is really hard to keep track of it all.

i'm with you man, jason is great. I think out of everyone he matches my tastes the most.

It almost shocks me to say this too, but I match with dan's gaming tastes as well quite a bit. Just not his outlook on life.

Say what you will about ffx-2's characters and overall tone, but it has the best use of the atb system in the series, by far.
And it uses the job system, how can you hate job systems?

Just started the episode and it's already a winner. Dan's opinion on food is still weird as hell. Ketchup is super damn versatile. He probably has eaten it so many times without knowing it, especially if he likes BBQ. Restricting it just to fries is silly (Especially since ketchup is not great for a lot of fries. Some need it, but a really good, fresh fry does not and it actively detracts).

Jason taking Dan to task on the MGS controls is awesome as well. Describing those things as "intuitive" is insane. Once you get used to them, they're serviceable. The don't detract too much from the game itself. Intuitive they are not. You can't pick up a controller with no knowledge of the game, they will seem completely foreign for quite some time. We need more Jason. He counterbalances Dan so well and the pair is fantastic together. Also, Jason is awesome in general.

Back on the BBQ talk, I think we can all agree barbecue is great. One of the few good things about Michigan is you can typically find all styles of it done at least reasonably well. We don't really have a regional style, but you can make up for it with variety.

Hearing the Bomb guys talk about JRPGs always makes me laugh. Brad saying that Persona is the only game that can pull off the Teens Save the World trope clearly just shows he hasn't played too many JRPGs outside of Final Fantasy. That's not a criticism of him, of course. You can't be expected to be fluent in every genre out there, but still funny. Yes the trope is very worn, and tired, at this point, but many series outside of the SMT stuff can still pull it off.

Also Jeff trying to explain Fabula Nova Crystalis was the best. It's even stupider than he gave it credit for. Nothing about these games' universe is shared at all. It just refers to SE using similar ideas and themes in all 3. God that thing was stupid. It's so damn esoteric that it's no surprise that the idea never actually came to fruition.

I hope Drew's ego is not so big that he won't have a problem accepting that Jason is way better on the Bombcast than him.

Why can't we have both? I love Drew and love Jason and have no problem having them rotating in and out. Also (maybe an unpopular opinion), but also more Rory please! More variety in taste is awesome.

Axiom Verge I bet. Dan has hinted at it being really good before.

Isn't
Persona 3 the only game where you actually save the world? Pretty sure in 2:IS and 4 you're just saving the city/town you live in.

I know that for Persona 2
it's revealed that everything is a cosmic bet made between Nyarlarthotep as the Chaotic deity and Philemon as the Big Good
and for Persona 4
the final Final culprit behind everything is Izanami and her motivation is to fill the world with Shadows or whatnot
.

Haven't gotten to Eternal Punishment yet, so I can't really say much on that, but I guess that could be true for P4. Its been a while since I've played it so I'm hazy on the details.
Completely forgot that Izanami was even a thing.

As mentioned, sort of.
Persona 4 has Izanami in the True End trying to spread the fog over the whole world. Very small part of the game so the "Teens save the world" isn't something you can't really say describes the plot as a whole.

I hope Drew's ego is not so big that he won't have a problem accepting that Jason is way better on the Bombcast than him.

They used to do 5 person casts when Patrick was around, don't see why they can't continue doing that.

I feel like Jason brings a much needed voice to the podcast. He plays a lot of Japanese games the others don't, and he provides a good springboard for Jeff to riff off of for fighting games.

I would not want to lose Drew though, he's come into his own on the bombcast in the last year.

Jason brings the knowledge of modern Japanese gaming that the rest of clearly don't have.

I would love him to be a regular on the bombcast.

(Though it's probably his own choice to not be on every week.)

Considering Jeff and Brad tend to have the lion's share of air time while Drew and Dan go silent until things are relevant to them, I don't see why Jason couldn't just slide into the lineup without losing another of the cast.

Yup, since Drew and Jason don't really speak much, I think they count as one person.
Was listening to 2013 Bombcasts. I really miss Vinny. :(

That's something you really don't realize until you actually go back and listen to old podcasts. It's a night and day difference. I think they should shuffle up the schedule a bit or maybe make someone else host. I think Brad is fine, but it would be refreshing to switch over to someone else for a while. It would be cool if they assigned one segment to each person.

Brad- Intro
Jeff- News (since he's pretty much everyone looks to for an opinion on the news)
Drew- Some off topic news/site schedule
Dan- Emails (Dan would probably pull some cool emails and probably be up for the position)
Brad- Outro

This way everyone stays engaged throughout the whole thing.

Jason is awesome and the show would be a lot better if Dan swore a vow of silence for whenever Final Fantasy is brought up.

I get what you're saying, but man has Brad come alive since he started hosting the podcast. I was getting really down on him before that, mainly because he'd rarely talk and when he did talk it was either DOTA or something negative. Since he's become host he's actually become way more active on the podcast (and seemingly even on UPF). Really like him now and wouldn't want to risk reverting back.

I also think things are fine as is. Dan, Jeff and Brad are just heavy talkers and Drew is just the type to hang back and contribute when he really feels like he has something to say. I'd love more Jason to bring in varied taste and counterbalance Dan a bit, but overall I think the structure still works.

Agreed. I think Brad is a very good host, and I think I notice the impact it's had on other stuff he does for the site that I enjoy. He walks a very fine line between keeping the Bombcast on track and not getting in the way of some of the sillier tangents and bits, which is probably not easy to do for a host.
