That was great. Listen to this, people. The peak into the review process was eye-opening — never knew it was so... scientific?

And good to see Giant Bomb spreading common sense when it comes to Link/the series overall when it comes to doing something new/different (e.g. voice acting, Link reincarnation, etc.).

They've talked about how that process was with spreadsheets etc. before, but never to this extent with how it affected scores and how that process was basically the reason for the score inflation in game reviews. That whole segment is fantastic.

Twilight Princess 3/5!

I agree. I can only imagine what would have happened if Jeff gave that score back in the day considering people went insane for an 8.8.

I hope Alex can get Splatoon on the top 10 list. I think he's the only one who kept playing it for some time, at least enough to see how it improved over time.

The "Nooooooooooooooooo" emote is from Revenge of the Sith

:)

What did I say? I know it's definitely from the end of that (considering it's one of the only damn things actual Vader says in the prequels), so I'm curious how I misspoke.

I think its when you said there are no references to the prequels in this.

The Fallout discussion was good and just further convinces me that, as much as everyone is playing Fallout right now, neither of the previous 3D Fallout's really grabbed me at all and I made the right call in skipping this one at launch

Super disappointed to hear even more about the lack of longevity in Battlefront, I really really want to love that game but I can't justify dropping that cash at the moment

Also it sounds like we now know what Brad's argument against Mario Maker is going to be during the GOTY recordings. Its interesting because, for example, I honestly wonder if Dan would be so high on the game if not for his rivalry with Patrick

Dan's rivalry with Patrick exists because he already loved making levels for it.

Dan seemed like he adored making Mario levels already, tormenting internet celebrity Patrick Klepek as his alter ego Danny Scoops seemed to push it over the line into passion territory.

Just that you didn't think there were any references to the prequels. The Noooooo emote technically is

Let's all hope Austin can sneak Invisible Inc into the top 10.

"Nintendo's best video game since Ocarina of Time"
- Jeff Gerstmann on Mario Maker

Wow.

I think the takeaway there is more that Jeff hasn't really liked any Nintendo games after Ocarine of Time all that much. I mean he also called Wario Ware Nintendo's best franchise a couple of years ago during another GOTY podcast.

Dan seemed like he adored making Mario levels already, tormenting internet celebrity Patrick Klepek as his alter ego Danny Scoops seemed to push it over the line into passion territory.

This, honestly I think Jeff also wouldn't have played it as much without that. I'm not super into Mario Maker, but it definitely made for some great site content.

Damn, Jeff pretty much lets the world know what his GOTY is during the podcast. I mean we all had an idea, but he pretty much comes out and says it.

And brad does not share his feelings. I can't wait for that fight on the podcasts.

thats two podcasts in a row i listened to today that went over the Nintendo Direct news with no mention of Dragon Quest at all, lol

Poor Dragon Quest. The west still needs you! Please don't leave.

It was missed and Jason seems to be a least a moderate DQ fan. For shame.

Not a lot of people in the West seem to give a shit about DQ. Even more 'in-there' gamers will say they like DQ8 and that'll be the end of it. Maybe DQ Heroes as well.

Just weird considering how HUUUGE DQ is in Japan. Here it's pretty much non-existent.

Jeff's description of exploring the city in Fallout 4 is spot on.

I was having pretty much the same conversation with a friend of mine where he hadn't visited Diamond City yet and I was telling him about how shit gets raw in the city.

DQ is a victim of bad timing, an art style that can turn off a lot of mainstream fans, being focused on the DS, a platform mainstream (non-JRPG people) RPG players didn't dig into much, and poor support in general by SE. It's a perfect storm of being forced into a niche over here.

It's not that weird when you consider how much they've repeatedly dropped the ball on the franchise in the States. The last game to be released was a Musuo and before that...?

I really hope if Jeff starts enjoying Undertale more and sticks with it that he sees the game through to the "true" ending.

To keep it vague, I have a distressing number of friends who play the game in a certain way, reach a certain point, and just stop, thinking they've seen pretty much all there is to see when the absolute best stuff in the game is yet to come (and does not necessarily require any replaying to get to; I think that assumption is what stopped many of them).

I can't remember the last time a game kept getting better and better right up through the end.

DQ IX was the last one before Musou right? IIRC, that performed beyond expectations. Nintendo published that one though, so who knows how SE felt about it. They skipped a bunch of the side stuff because that has historically performed very poorly here. X was an obvious skip because there's no way they'd keep up with the localization of a F2P MMO. VII and VIII 3DS seems to have been left to dry because SE has all but abandoned 3DS in the West. It's basically a perfect storm of weird situations as well as some bad news that has kept DQ niche in the west.

Of course they missed the Dragon Quest news. Shit job covering a Nintendo Direct as usual.

You recall incorrectly. Joker 2 seriously bombed, not IX.

I meant that IX did really well. I know Joker 2 is what really soured SE on the series for at least the spinoffs. Did Joker 2 come after IX? It'd be real weird if IX doing well still did not wash off the stink of Joker 2.

Oh, "beyond" expectations. My mistake. Read that as below. Joker 2 and VI were both after IX.
