Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

I don't care what Giant Bomb says (they are not much better than any group of critics from IGN, etc), but I certainly care about how they say what they say.

*GASP!* Never been happier to be wrong. Even including the time I was all "there's no way we have free speech in this country," and then heck, look at that! The President's a shit face and your religion sucks!

Same here. Even though I don’t find their discussions on games that enlightening I’m usually able to get a laugh or two out of them.

I’m liking the fmv-game style of the videos this year.

I've been rewatching the 2010 GOTY vids. It's neat to revisit these now that I've actually gotten a chance to play most of the game's they're talking about.

I hope all the videos aren't Mad Dog McRee, it was fucking hilarious but if they can have an idea that good, they must have more.

I expect to be blown away each day with crazier and crazier shit.

Also who is ZMF? A joke character from their forums... who is actually Brad? I'm confused.

Now that I've watched that mission, ... I don't get their love for Saints Row. I don't need to play this. I love hearing them talk about it. They can have it. I don't get it.

You're not alone. Virtually nothing about that game appeals to me. Just not my cup of tea.

Just FYI to the Giant Bomb crew in regards to Johnny Gat:

He's definitely dead. It was confirmed in this podcast with Tom Chick and the lead designer of SRTT; but also there's a cutscene where you're driving his body in a coffin in a hearse across a bridge on the way to his funeral (then the Luchadores blow up the bridge with RPGs). I think the storytelling in this part of the game was just not as clear as it should have been, but I think it was by accident and not on purpose.

Watching a clip of a mission on YouTube or whatever =/= playing it for yourself.

Saints Row haters gonna hate though.

Seriously needs more Vinny shots...that shit was funny as hell looking at his expressions..I thought they where going to be going back and forth from the couch to the game. Maybe next time have it picture in picture.

You can also unlock
zombie Gat as a homie.
But hey, anything is possible after SR3 so they could probably devise some crazy way to involve him again.

Anyway, their showing of the game was pretty good. It has way more impact if you don't know that part is in the game though. I loved Ryan's wavy tube man esque scenes too.

I think they overhype the game a lot, and it's still probably the best game I've played this year next to Skyrim. The stuff with Johnny is never explained well. And yeah, you have to play the game yourself to appreciate the truly insane moments. Watching a video clip doesn't give you a real frame of reference.

I think something that they didn't play up enough(aside from the sublime stuff) was the awesome use of music in the game.

I don't get why people root for Dark Souls in threads like this. Oh, it's goty, but western gaming media (especially GB) don't really appreciate the game. Notice I said western media, not gamers. The people running most of these sites are just not the demographic for games like Dark Souls anymore. Vinny is of course the exception but we know he has a very classic taste in games.

not that gamespot so important or anything but they did gave demon souls 2009 GOTY.

I don't think Vinny would vote for Dark Souls as his game of the year, either. I'm pretty sure he never ended up finishing the game and he definitely had a love/hate relationship with that game. I think if he could, he'd cast his vote for The Witcher, so, even though I dont think he enjoyed it quite as much, i have a feeling he may just cast a vote for The Witcher 2.

I'm glad they remembered the great job the actors did in LA Noire. The irish guy they were talking about was really great, even if he was just mimicking James Cromwell in LA Confidential.

Dark Souls has been in the top 10 of most western GOTY lists and was given a 9 or above by virtually ever western gaming site. Just because it isn't getting the goty from everyone doesn't mean it isn't 'appreciated'.

Yeah that's true. Also
some kind of cloning may not be out of the question either. Still, I kind of doubt we'll be seeing him again. As Jeff said, the main character kind of took over his role in a lot of ways.

I don't hate it.

Excellent Day 1. My only complaint is that Two Worlds II needed a mention in the Dave's Eastern Bloc Game of the Year. Granted I never played Cargo, but the quick look didn't do it any favors. Two Worlds II is a great game

I've always found it weird last year how they released the video first and then the podcast. I guess because more people will watch the videos?

But then why not just launch them simultaneously?

I'm going to just have to come to grips with the fact that every year Rockstar will release a near-broken game with boring mechanics and it will be universally lauded by the media.

Every time I hear them talk about SR3 on the podcast, it sounds amazing. Then every time I've seen them play the game on TNT or a quick look, it looks dreadful.

It's driving me crazy.

I don't agree with dismissing Cave Johnson. He's one of the central characters in Portal 2. Like Jeff said, a good character really isn't more than voice acting and writing. He's long dead by the events of the game, but he still gets a satisfying story arc, his dialog is hilarious and J.K. nails the part.

I didn't hear any lauding besides memorable actors...

I was more referring to Ryan's top 10 list.

Oh sorry man, didn't watch that part yet. Well....I shut my brain off a bit and pretended LA Noire was like Police Quest 1947, with all the jank that series was guilty of, and I was kinda into it. But of course it's a disappointment.

Vinny on TV is probably the greatest thing GB have done all year XD

Also; Mad Dog Davis... incredible.
Definitely. I was cracking up at both quite heartily.

I ended up finally ended up subscribing for another year. These guys deserve it (and the $35 Christmas deal is pretty nice, too).
