Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

I got SotD for Christmas so I don't know what to believe now!

The QL sold me on the character and attitude of the game, basically. The gunplay didn't look especially hot, and the mechanic of clearing the darkness out of every area sounds like it could get seriously tedious. It's a game I wanted because it seemed like the other elements of the game could transcend that.

In my opinion they don't and it never happened for me in any Suda game.

it's an easy game so not too bad. there were a few sections with instant deaths which annoyed the shit outta me but the dialogue and humor is worth playing through.

the gunplay is RE4 except you can move while aiming. feels great

Suda didn't direct SotD, I'm sure his dreadful sense of game design is still in full force with whatever massacre he's crafting.

The gameplay in this is directed by Mikami, which is very clear because it feels like a natural evolution of Resident Evil 4. You can shit on the gameplay in Suda games all you want, fact is, this isn't really a Suda game aside from the script.

Doesn't feel anywhere near as good as RE4 and the aiming thing acts super weird at times. You think you are aiming directly at something but then you don't hit it. Stuff like that.

Then it's the worst Mikami game ever, or the rest of Grasshopper is incompetent. I don't care, the gamepaly is just not good.

Feeling even more confident I'll like it now!

I dunno, I had no issues. the whole dark/light thing got tedious tho. so not necessary.

SotD plays well. That's it. Mikami was there to tell Suda 'NO' whenever he started neglecting gameplay in favour of shoving harmonicas into character's throats, and it shows.

...I never had any problems with how NMH played, though. So I still prefer that game. Both fantastic games, IMO.

Mikami isn't credited for anything that specific, and based on his comments, his role was more advisory, visiting the studio a couple of times a month. However it's still clearly modeled after Resident Evil 4.

My issues with the gameplay come much more from the game design itself than the tactile controls. I think it controls fine, shooting felt right to me. But the encounter design wasn't particularly thrilling. There are a couple of great levels. One in particular is like this small village/farm place leading to a church. If the game was all that stuff, it would have been wonderful. It has that Kojima-ish issue of never being comfortable just playing it straight, like they're not confident enough in their core gameplay that they want to distract you from it as much as possible, and it's just an irritation.

Shadows of the Damned has perfectly fine controls. But I think a lot of the "improvements" they make sap the system of any of RE4's tension that made it exciting. Light Shots stun for instant melee kills no matter where they hit on the enemy, significantly reducing the importance of accurate aiming in a fight. And it's easy to get out of danger by dodging everywhere, since it's almost perfectly invincible and can be used over and over.

Because of that, it was fairly easy for me to cheese my way through almost every normal encounter on the hardest difficulty setting. I wouldn't recommend playing on that setting, though, because it makes all the boss encounters last far too long. You'll probably have more fun playing it in a style closer to RE4 on normal.

The game is more complex than Ryan seems to think it is, but there are a lot of missed beats in the fourth act, which nearly outweigh the really original scenarios in the game's final act.

Yes it does. Probably my favourite third person shooter of 2011.

I don't know if I'd go that far in a year which a Dead Space game was released. The shooting is finally an improvement over RE5, but a lot of the combat mechanics make it play like a less fleshed out version of Dead Space's combat.

Yeah, it almost seemed like they went out of their way to spoil every game they talked about. :P

No way! I'm annoyed with how few spoilers there have been. They spend all year catering to people who freak out if you mention a sonic game has a casino level (except when Brad slips up). Give me one lousy week where they spoil the shit out of everything. I'm hopeful the awards so far just haven't lent themselves to digging into a game's story but I think they are tip toeing around a lot of spoilers

I miss giantbomb spoilercasts :( Those need to come back, I still think the MGS4 spoilercast is the greatest podcast they ever did!

Agreed. Give me a spoilercast for every big release of the year.

I don't want to hear spoilers for games I haven't played so avoiding them on Bombcast is good, but by GOTY time they should be free to talk openly about everything. It's the only chance we get to hear their thoughts on specific things, which is why I wish we had spoilercasts which you could choose to listen to or save until you've finished the game.

We know you're reading this, duders. Make it happen!

OK, that's a fair criticism. I'm not deep enough into it yet, I guess, but it seems fine thus far. I'll see how 'Kojima-y' I find it as it goes on, I suppose. As for the Mikami stuff, that's all I expected him to have done, but it's enough for him to say 'OK tighten up this this and this'.

Every major release might be overkill given the time investment, but why didn't we get a Saint Row spoilercast! Come on giantbomb, you know you want to.

I also liked what they did with Portal 2 this year, wrapping the spoilercast and a developer interview into one

I'd settle for the Skylanders X-Press instead Jeff.......

When I say every big release I mean games that at least a few of them have played.

I mean, Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Gears 3 etc etc all could have had awesome spoilercasts!

Good choices for todays categories except for maybe the last. Not sure what that is really about. I wonder what the runner-ups for Best Looking Game are.

OMG :') _0_ _0- :D:D:D:D :') _0_ _0- :D:D:D:D :') _0_ _0- :D:D:D:D :') _0_ _0- :D:D:D:D

I don’t know if Klep-Tok (gonna assume there’s a hyphen) is a direct homage or some completely original creation but it’s kinda insane genius.

maybe someone better versed in FMV game history can let me know.

Wow. I was sure Jeff would pick Trackmania 2 as his game of the year.

Well, I didn't actually put that as my guess, but afterwards I wish I had been able to. But I guess I lucked out!

I am probably right that none of them has played Deus Ex except Jeff for the review right? Such a shame that they will totally overlook it.
