Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

listen to the podcast maybe?
I just want the information. A 5 minute video or a 4 hour podcast should not be the only ways to get the information. :p

I mean, if the videos were on youtube or if there were ads on the video, then maybe I would understand, but I don't see what they would lose if they put their lists up.

If anything, since I am using the subscriber RSS feed, I don't even visit the site at all at this point.

Well, unless someone tells me different, I will assuming that Dark Souls and Catherine are the only Japanese game on anyone's lists this year.

So funny that in the time you have been looking for the information you could have just watched the video. Ha.

I haven't watched any of the top ten videos and now that I know that Skyrim beat Saints Row, I probably won't.

I mean, I can't even compare lists without watching the videos back and back and take notes? That seems silly.

there's 8 totally different endings. Did they spoil them all?
Those endings all branch out from the exact same plot point though.

Patrick mentioned in previous Bombcasts that he's really bothered by the direction the story goes at the end of that game regardless of what ending you get, so I'm sure that gets spoiled.

ok, I havent listened yet guess i'll find out tonight.

Off the to of my head, Zelda and Mario 3d Land
Haha, I probably should have said "not published by Nintendo".

When El Shaddai didn't even make the "best looking" game discussion - even though that game is maybe 90% art design - I just figured that small Japanese games were out of contention.

A few thoughts:

I hate that most of Giant Bomb don't love Dark Souls. I love love love Dark Souls and I love love love Giant Bomb. Why can't the two just get along? Even Vinny doesn't love it like he should!

Brad's views on Arkham City are 110% correct. Arkham Asylum was so great and nearly every great aspect was ruined in City. Doesn't deserve to be in top 10.

Patrick's fight for Deus Ex was so justified. Definitely a game that deserves more love. He should've fought harder for it!

Jeff calling LA Noire a tech demo is slightly harsh, but it's still rubbish and I loved him calling it out.

Brad's opinion on Rayman is really surprising. I haven't had a chance to play it yet but I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on it and from the outside it seems like a game he should love.

I feel they all undersold UC3.

Vinny screaming "PLOT TWIST" when Ryan showed he wasn't supporting SR3 had me in tears because that was my reaction. I enjoyed the debate and although Skyrim isn't my GOTY, it's much more deserving than SR3. Very surprising.

One hell of a podcast. Great video content. Just top class effort for everything. This alone justifies the price of subscribing, so DO IT. No other site does what GB does.

Basically they reveal
that Cathy is a demon or something
which pretty much makes me not want to bother playing it.

It is my fault I know, I knew I'd finished all the 2011 games I cared about, but because Cathy is 2012 in Europe, I forgot about it.
yea, a bit of a major spoiler. There's more going on tho, no worries.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but isn't the social interaction about dealing with the two girls?
Wouldn't this completely colour your interactions with the one of them?

I don't know, but I imagine the game tries to show Cathy as the fun, free spirited girl, and Kathy as the heavy, lived in option, hoping to tempt you towards Cathy, but knowing that about her, no one would.

you totally would wanna get with Cathy for the hot cell pics and funny texts. Plus there are some wild endings if you choose one over the other.

That Deus Ex got cut and LA Noire stayed in is a shame. Some of them have a weirdly high opinion of it. I liked it but top 10? Nah!

I honestly don't agree how they treat Skyrim in seperate versions, due to the PS3 version having special issues. It is THE game, its faults should be applicable to the game's development and its developers, Bethesda. If it is close to unplayable, it shouldn't get the spot.

Nah, they all had good experiences (mostly) on the other two platforms. For them the game is great. They recognise that only two of the versions of the game are worthy of that accolade.

I think they handled it the right way. Skyrim is one of my favourite games of the year because I played it on PC. I think the PS3 situation is shit and I hope those players don't let up on Bethesda, but it's not going to stop me saying it's a great game because the version I played was.

The "As long as it doesn't happen to me" stance is valid... If you keep the list to yourself. This is a public website that potentially could indirectly put a stamp on a broken game saying "GOTY", that sends out wrong vibes for me.

Well said. People asking others not to vote a game as goty because of a different version just confuses me. I didn't have any problems playing it, and I should not put it as goty for some dumb protest that doesn't affect me?

4 hour podcast? who has time to listen to this crap

Me. See they make these portable devices now that make it really easy to take your audio programs with you so you can listen to them at your convenience. Some of them even work with your car's hi-fi set!

This is where I'm coming from, too. How can you endorse something as Game of the Year when it's very much broken on one of the three platforms it's made for? More importantly - it's broken on that platform, has been out for over a month, and yet is still not fixed.

I haven't listened to the podcast yet but if it plays out as described in this thread: in which everyone but a single person being in agreement as to GOTY but that single person then browbeats everyone else to vote for something else... then GB's system is broken.

They state specifically it's the 360 and PC versions.

At least on the podcast, not watched the video. I imagine they do there too because in Jeff's top 10 he slammed the PS3 version.

They did all they had a "responsibility" to do.

Listening right now at work.

Kudos to Ryan for pointing out the crediting how NG handled their supernatural element.

I hear what you're saying, but this is essentially saying to Bethesda "Yeah, you really fucked it up for a large part of the people who bought your game, but hey, the other 2 versions work good, so here is your reward".

I mean, where is the limit? What if 2/3 of the versions were like that? I think we as consumers should expect a working game, they failed at 33% on that, and it should be taken into account when you review or award a game.

I see your point, but it's selling like hotcakes and the info is out there about PS3. As much as I love GB, I don't think they're really making much of a difference either way with what they say or do about the situation.

I kinda agree that Bethesda don't deserve to be praised for making a broken version, but I feel they do for making such awesome versions at the same time.

So... I dunno. Game of the year and fail of the year, man!
