Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

I'm asking your to present yourself better, not be a fanboy, and maybe experience something before raging at it. It'll improve you as a person and your won't come off as an anonymous nerd online making false claims. That kind of crap really just ruins any kind of discussion in GOTY threads.
I'm not raging at it and have nothing to prove. Earlier in this very thread I said I was clearly in the minority with this game, and on Giant Bomb said that I probably just didn't get it in a thread. I'm not saying it's an objectively bad game. Quite frankly, I'm shocked it didn't win.

Edit: My focus on Saints Row 3 when you compile my comments like that is maybe excessive. Admittedly unnecessary. It's easier to lose track on Giant Bomb across the multiple sections of the site (videos, news, forums, etc.).

I don't really give a fuck either way (haven't played skyrim or SR3), but i have to imagine Ryan said that stuff just to avoid a two-hour Brad filibuster. Because otherwise, it doesn't make any fucking sense at all lol.

"Most game"? Hell, might as well give it to The Old Republic or Disgaea 4

well at least the got a new category for next year with "Most Game" ;)

Also, I think Vinny had a good point in that the Witcher 2 spoiled him for Skyrim. Some of the things Brad said Skyrim did so well (the way the world's background is fed to the player) TW2 just does far better. It'd have been a much more interesting discussion if they had all played TW2.

And that's not to say that TW2 is or isn't a better game than Skyrim, they're do such different things it's really hard to compare the two.

Ryan has SR3 as his personal GOTY and then doesn't have it as his GOTY 2 days later.. interesting. Having said that, like really... Is it that big of a deal which game won lol

Yeah, I really don't care about any GOTY shows. But it's still pretty stupid how it happened.

Probably, what I have seen of The Witcher 2 looks awesome. Really hope the console version turns out well, becases that's the only way I'm going to play it.

How spoilerish do these discussions get?

I want to listen but don't want anything UC3 spoiled for me.

They spoil important things for UC3.

Yeah, they all had a weird respect for it but it would've been more interesting if they had all given it the time it deserves. Would've been higher up the list, I'm sure.

Actually The Witcher 2 would have had a better chance if Ryan didn't play any of it.

Interesting. Wouldn't have been shocked if TW 2 was at the top of my list if I had a good PC. First Witcher was so good.

Ryan’s gonna come back to the office later next week, snap out of a daze and go, “waitaminute? I voted against Saints Row? It was my favourite game of the year? why did I do that? what’s going on? Oh God, where am I?”

He was under a spell the entire time!

The
S(c)ully
stuff is something you don't want to know.

Ah, I love Patrick for that, haha.

I guess so, but it's not like it's a big reveal in the game. It's just sort of, 'yeah, of course that didn't happen' kind of attitude, but yeah, you're probably right.

They revealed a lot more when they discussed the story in the last episode I think.

I was shocked when it happened and then disappointed that they didn't went through with it.

It's crazy they even have these discussions without everyone having played at least the main contenders. I feel like years past they did a much better job trying to play all the main games before the deliberations. But this year how many of them actually completed games outside of what they were supposed to review and Skyrm/Saints Row. I'm of course omitting Vinny because he definitely tries to play everything.

As much as I disagree with X and think they should have chosen Y for Z category, it's so nice to see that outlets like GB don't succumb to obnoxious message board hive-mentality on a lot of stuff, particularly the LA Noire hate.

Patrick seems to echo annoying GAF opinion a little bit, but it's not too bad.

I feel like just knowing it happens would ruin a significant chunk of that section.

UC is a series where you want to stay in the dark about what happens. At least for me it is.

Just started reading some of the newer guest GOTYs, Brad Muir has Dark Souls at 1? Greg Kasavin has TACTICS FUCKING OGRE as number 1? Holy shit, I knew these guys were cool but not this cool. Fuckin icebergs and shit up in this.

As someone who has played Skyrim but not Saints Row, every single argument Brad had against it could be levered towards Skyrim easily: bunch of repetition, not really that much to combat, they've been doing this "style" of games for years, samey side quests, some questlines are not really that interesting, etc. I'm glad Vinny (<3) at least called him out on all that shit because he is just arguing for the sake of it. LOL, I really need to play SR3 it seems.
I'm not invested in any game "taking it" (my personal GOTY is Portal 2 and they dumped that under Bastion, lol) but Brad has a shitty way of making arguments. Last year was no different. *smh*

I guess so, if I'd been told that, I'd probably be irritated, until I saw it in the game then pleased I was warned of it's poorness.

As an aside, I've played a few hours of SR3 now, and no way is it game of any year.

Well, it's not really about The Witcher 2's position on the list (I mean, moving from 6 to 4, or whatever, who cares?) but it'd kind of temper opinions on some of the stuff Brad found so exceptional in Skyrim. I haven't finished Skyrim, but to my surprise I'm actually enjoying the way the lore is being introduced, but it's not that unique when compared to TW2.

I think the fact that both Skyrim and SR3 are both similarly flawed to such a degree says one massive thing.

Neither of them should've been GOTY.

;)

Booo!

Brad is the most stubborn, I just think he really really likes the game -- he seemed actually unable to see the game's flaws. I think a problem may be that they seem to record all of the year-end deliberations at once, and GOTY is last. So at that point, they just don't have the energy. Maybe they should record the GOTY first.

I've found that the guests generally have much more interesting GOTY lists.

Finished the podcast. I can't believe Brad won, crazy. Almost exactly the same as the DLC shit last year. In the minority, and victorious.

Damn 10+ hours of podcasting and (didn't do the math) over 2 hours of video? Major props to everyone at Giantbomb for an astronomical amount of content over the holidays.

Haha. Maybe it's not a good idea to make these a podcast, since it seems as arbitrary as the crazy ranked list system that you get at other outlets.

Kind of scared to listen now, as if 4 hours wasn't scary enough...

Also, agreed with the guest lists. Nice to know the people making games have taste!

Skyrim is awesome but Saints Row really fucking deserved this, I haven't had so much fun in a video game all year. Fuck you Brad, fuck you Ryan. I'm indifferent with Patrick.

I'll hold this grudge for a whole day.

I have gotten to the point where I cannot play single player shooter games and enjoy them anymore. I don't know when it happened, but I played no more than 3 hours each of Saints Row 3, Rage, Crysis 2, Modern Warfare 3, and BF3. I just can't do it anymore. I don't enjoy shooting AI subroutines no matter how cleverly couched and atmospheric, no matter how weighty the shooting, interesting the story, I have shot and killed people so many times that I can't do it anymore. Saints Row 3 could be the greatest game ever created by humanity (which Jeff clearly thinks it is) and I would not play it because the shooter is done in my book.

If it's not a multiplayer shooter, I will not buy it ever again. This year has brought a fantastical revelation to me about my opinion on single player shooter games: I fucking don't like them anymore. The only game where I shot people this year that I actually finished was Deus Ex HR and that was because it was a stealth game. It's amazing to me because I've dumped literally thousands of hours in Quake and Counterstrike and TF2, and perhaps I've just burned myself out on them. Skyrim wins by default out of the two of them because I just couldn't play anymore of SR3.

He wasn't in the minority, though. It came down to a vote, at the end, and Ryan did a face-heel turn at the very last second.

And I'm suggesting his 'face-heel' was because he couldn't be bothered to debate it anymore. Same as last year, although last year it was three on one, so this isn't quite as bad.

That was a lot of podcast, phew. But anyway I think both sides made good arguments in the Saints Row/Skyrim showdown.

The only glaring thing that made me shake my head was how L.A. Noir snuck on to the top 10 list. I could have sworn it sounded like they cut it and then put it back on the list. Worse, in the Rayman argument, Ryan, who loved L.A. Noir, told Patrick that the reason he loved Rayman was not the gameplay really but how the game looked and sounded.

Patrick made a good argument that that is precisely why L.A. Noire shouldn't be on the list. I also completely agree on the scoring system complaint about L.A. Noir. The facial cap stuff and presentation were amazing. But the actual game that I played wasn't very fun.

That said, it's just at top 10 list so I don't care either way. God that podcast was awesome. Listened to all four hours of it straight today.

may I just say that this year's top 10 video may be the best thing I've seen on the internet. really brilliant from start to finish. I'm so glad I'm a subscriber to this awesome site.

You know I felt like that was the case as well. It's like they all just bend over because they don't want to spend hours arguing with him.

Yeah, I can see that, especially when there is not much to his arguments in the first place and you keep going in circles around him. I mean Jeff and Vinny listed some flaws quite succinctly and he was like "yeah, I don't care", then he points out the same flaws towards another game as if that is enough to win his argument.

All is part of the reason I don't really like Brad's style and tastes. If he is impressed by something (be it the graphic flair in Limbo, snappiness in Super Meat Boy or the analog combat in Dead Island) then everything else becomes unimportant. I think Vinny and Jeff can have a wider perspective towards flaws in games.

No offense, Brad, because you seem like a cool guy...

But your arguments were kiiiinda bullshit.

Just sayin.

Just listened to all 4 hours of the last podcast and wow, that last discussion between Skyrim and Saints Row was intense. I honestly didn't know who was going to win until the very end. Ryan taking Skyrim's side was such a god damn insane twist it blew me away. I was waiting for him to switch back and be like "HAH! just kidding" the entire time.

Thank you based Brad for holding your ground firm on Skyrim. You made some excellent points and I love you for making sure the better game won.

Edit: Also loved @ around 3:30 when Patrick was making a point about Skyrim and Jeff wanted to jump in and dismiss it and Patrick just straight up goes "Chill" to Jeff. I thought that was pretty funny.

He clearly stated that Saint's Row 3 didn't hold up in the end because it didn't have enough content to please him.

This is the first time a Brad filibuster has been for something I'd side with. Dark Souls was never going to get its due, so with the real GOTY out I'm glad he made it go to the right game.
