Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

Brad said many times on the podcasts he played the game for like 65 hours and hadn't played it once since the release date. Real goty right there when it doesn't even draw you back with all that limitless content and amazing combat, eh?

Dude he had so many other fucking games to get through.

Come on. How often has there been a GOTY that you could actually play for 65 hours? Especially a single player game that has to produce actual content for each hour, rather than relying on multiplayer to pick up the slack for its four hour 'campaign.'

Er the last sentence there was a joke..ya know..limitless content..amazing combat...

But do you really mean to say that every hour of playing Skyrim is a completely unique piece of content?

Could I get a timestamp of when they start discussing Skyrim vs. Saints Row 3? I don't care about Skyrim spoilers just games like Catherine that I haven't played yet.

I'm really not sure how valid an excuse that is sometimes. I have a feeling there are a fair number of people on GAF that play through as many or more games as any of the Giant Bomb guys and have jobs that don't involve playing video games. Not that I'm criticizing them or anything, but that's kind of the nature of Giant Bomb as a site for coverage. They only play and review what they feel is relevant.

Also, he plays a whole hell of a lot of SC2, apparently :P

So Brad is moving up in the world?

Last year he put his foot down for best DLC and the Bioshock 2 DLC won it.

This year he managed to make everyone agree on Skyrim. Gotta hand it out to him, he's a pretty persistent fellow, considering he's always very low key during the whole rest of the year.

I'm gonna skip listening to the day 5 podcast, just because I really really don't like Skyrim and anything I might hear as an argument for it will make me feel sour.

No bad feelings towards the guys at giantbomb or Brad. You're all awesome and you'll always be awesome, but apparently your opinions and my opinions don't always match.

I think next year they should just let Vinny chose. He knows what's up :P

Right at about 3 hours, 3 minutes in.

I can't quite remember, but I'm pretty sure there are some Saints Row 3 spoilers in there as well (though I'm guessing you're cool with that).

He's also the only reason Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was Wii game of the year two years ago.

65 hours is a lot of time to put into a game, regardless of whether or not he did it post or pre release.

Brad is really bad at arguing.

lovely

edit: btw, real talk: Skyrim is better than Saints Row. Not even sure SR will make my top 10 list.

While I think Portal 2 is better than SR3 (maybe the only game last year that was), SR3 is the GiantBomb of video games, it reflects so much of their collective tastes that it feels like it should be their winner to me.

EDIT: How do people know Vinny is playing Vanquish?

I finally got around to watching it and the ending was pretty disappointing. Ryan's reasoning for his decision didn't really make any sense. Wanting more of something is not a negative. And yeah, by the end Brad's responses were reaching fanboy levels of hyperbole. But I don't really care that much about the result. it was still fun to listen to, it just didn't make much sense.

My only real problem with Brad talking about Skyrim is how he always downplays Morrowind and Oblivion and claims only now Bethesda got it right. While Oblivion was indeed a letdown (and actually has many of the same problems that drag Skyrim down for me) Morrowind was an absolute masterpiece when it came out ten years ago.

If Morrowind only had an easy way to follow quests like Skyrim then I would even now see it as an absolute masterpiece.

Having just finished the last podcast, they're all terrible at this.

Name a thing in Skyrim that's not available in any other game (it's available in many other games.)

Name a thing that Saints Row does poorly (Skyrim does the same thing poorly.)

Was everyone just shooting from the hip? No notes, no prepared thoughts? I've heard more well developed arguments at last call.

Is it really or is that just the perception of the gaming public nowadays due to shorter campaigns in games? I'd say I averaged at least 80 hours a game back in the 90s, and probably the same in the 00's.

Off the top of my head I can name probably 10 games this generation I've spent more than 80 hours with -

Patapon 2
Battlefield 3
MAG
Persona 4
Mass Effect 2
FF13
Dragon Age Origins
Street Fighter 4
3rd Strike
Gran Turismo 5
Super Mario Galaxy
Mario Kart Wii

and I'm sure there are more. I'm not even a hardcore gamer! I have the whole family/job thing so I don't game except after 9PM.

I'm not saying this is the norm at all, but I honestly don't think 65 hours is a lot of time in a game even by today's standards.

This doesn't really have anything to do with the discussion though, just making a comment. Obviously Brad put enough time into Skyrim to be able to judge it.

I virtually never put more than sixty hours into a game, and never did. The 90s was no different.

I did put 55 hours into Skyrim, and FFXIII, FO3 was around that, that's about it this generation that comes to mind.

I’m not sure how to break this to you but, yes, yes you are.

65 hours is a ton of time in a game (regardless of whether someone is a reviewer or not). your view might be a little skewed because you don’t realize just how few people spend the time you do on games.

All the games in the series have significant fundamental issues and Morrowind probably overall had most. Gothic 2 was released around the same time and was overall the better game. Morrowind might still be my favorite in the series, but probably due to the fact I wasn't aware of the issues as the time. I actually didn't even finish it despite doing everything else in the game.

In terms of 'at the time' comparisons, I think Morrowind might have been Better than Oblivion.

Might? There is no doubt in my mind that Morrowind is far and away the superior game. Skyrim was almost there with me, unfortunately I can no longer play my copy so it can't even count it.

Brad's like a bear in hibernation... Storing up all of his energy for when the winter of gaming season ends and the spring of awards season dawns.

Brad pushed shattered memories into award-zone territory? He can do no wrong.
Disclaimer: I have not listened to the final podcast or played SR3/Skyrim.

Hm, but would you call someone who plays an hour or two of basketball a day a hardcore basketballer? If I play an average of 2 hours a day, I already have 60 hours invested in one month. Obviously with life getting in 2 hours every single day is impossible, but then there are days where you put in 3 or 5 or 6 or 1.

My point is, if I was perhaps actively trying to place top 8 in an SF4 tournament or played with a ranked clan in MAG..then I'd say I'm a hardcore gamer. But I put in a game, play it a bit, and that's that. I guess I just get great bang for my buck!

Yeah, that is interesting. Definitely seems to not care much for anything they've done previously. I agree about Morrowind and I loved Fallout 3. I even enjoyed a decent amount of Oblivion (though not as much as the aforementioned games).

Man..really? Do you guys realize the difference of simply having a hobby and actually being good at it? The difference between "this is fun" and "hardcore"? Playing an hour or two of basketball is definitely not hardcore. I used to run marathons as a hobby and the difference between someone like me who trained every other day with one long run on the weekend and someone who actually had a set marathon schedule is completely different. Even if I did invest an average of 8 hours a week on running it's still nothing compared to someone who takes it seriously. The same could be said about games. I suppose it's just the perspective of people who can't put in that much time?

But anyway, sorry for going that off topic, I was just a bit surprised to see people thinking 65 hours in a game is that much (and especially in this case an RPG). I guess after this much time gaming I can't help but love it. Back to the Brad hating.

That's very debatable. Pretty different games with pretty different ambitions.

As far as issues in Morrowind go I would say it's the one with the most minor issues. A lot of interface improvements and streamlining happened over the past decade, but it's only natural for modern games to be better in that regard.
Fundamentally I still think Morrowind is the best in the series, though.

lol, what hell dude? Putting 80+ hours into all those games is insane, I have only put 80 hours into maybe 15 games my entire life and I definitely still consider myself hardcore about the hobby. You play a lot of games thus making you "hardcore" or whatever word you want to use. They all mean the same thing, you play a lot of games so no need to get defensive at all :P

In Conclusion: US GAMERS RIGHT?

Oh I wasn't being defensive I just think the word "hardcore" has VERY different meanings on this particular forum and in real life. I don't want to be labeled "GAF hardcore" otherwise I'd have to hate on all you lowly casuals mwahaha.

Bradgate continues, huh?

It's always the quiet ones, hah. I do have to concur that his debate style sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the cast, but I still agreed with most of his sentiment. He should just tone it down next time.
