Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

"Hardcore" has completely lost its meaning during this generation. It's not even worth talking about anymore. :p

Nod. Agreed. I will now rank my favorite GB members from best to worst for no reason:

Vinny
Jeff
Alex
Dave
Ryan
Drew
Luchadeer
Patrick
Brad

That's very debatable. Pretty different games with pretty different ambitions.

As far as issues in Morrowind go I would say it's the one with the most minor issues. A lot of interface improvements and streamlining happened over the past decade, but it's only natural for modern games to be better in that regard.
Fundamentally I still think Morrowind is the best in the series, though.
Even ignoring technical issues, such as the way it has to handle streaming (I don't care about technical issues though, I played through the game on a p3 500 system and I imagine the frame rate was around 15-20), it has a ton of completely broken mechanics, worst implementation of combat in the series, mostly copy/paste dungeons and the same terrible character building/level up system that Oblivion uses. Hardly minor issues. It's perfectly reasonable to consider it the best game in the series, but it seems people tend to ignore the flaws in Morrowind and keep harping about the ones in Oblivion/Skyrim.

e: also most NPCs never move so the cities don't feel alive, unlike in Gothic 2 where they had schedules ala Oblivion. Admittedly Gothic 2 has fewer NPCs/locations, but can't blame everything on the game being old

The FMV was all amazing, and the crossovers for the site GOTY video was godlike. Great job, guys.

And I didn't see their GOTY choice coming. Jeff and Ryan no longer control the site! o.O

Bradgate continues, huh?

It's always the quiet ones, hah.

If everyone thought Brad was aggressive, just imagine what happens when Luchadeer breaks his silence!

Still can't believe Dead Space left such an impact on Brad. I was personally disappointed with it, in the sense that most all of the scares were recycled, the new enemies were funnier than frightening, and the addition of more humans just didn't work for me. Not to mention the ending was kinda eh.

I loved the first, but 2 left me really underwhelmed (I actually went almost 100% media blackout on it after keeping up way too much with 1), and I haven't really had a desire to revisit it, since. And I 1000/1000 DS, and still played more!

I will have to agree with him on some of the technical points he made, though. The game looks great. It just didn't hit the highs that 1 did for me. Actually, the one part of the game that I really did love was
when you're exploring the ishimura.

Still love you, Brad, but no way would I have put it that high on my personal list.

Alex is third? Worse than GBs GotY list.

Alex hate is completely inconceivable to me. He's Alex Navarro. Do people not know who he is or something? Has as much old school cred as anyone in the journalism and development scenes of gaming. He also actually speaks what he thinks and is GOOD at gaming..unlike BRAD SHOEMAKER.

Im sorry but the fact that ps3 owners were screwed out of playing skyrim without the technical issues makes it automatically not number 1 for me, or should it for anybody else. They screwed over at least a million people that purchased it on ps3. Saints Row deserved GOTY as it could be played enjoyably on all platforms. Skyrim is a great game, but the fact that it is completely broken on ps3 and you guys just glanced over that fact real quickly really left a bad taste in my mouth. Sorry Giantbomb, but this year you have really disappointed me.

Not that it really matters as I will still pay for the site, I am just voicing my opinion.

Most of the issues are fair, but calling the dungeons mostly copy/paste is crazy. It had the most unique dungeons and locations of any RPG I've ever played. I can't count the number of times I stumbled into something I had never seen before in that game. I guess all the dwarf stuff looked the same, but there wasn't much of that.

Also game of the year was Portal 2.

The problem here is that many people think Skyrim should not have won simply from an ethical perspective. Skyrim is one of the best RPG's ever developed (my opinion of course, but still), which is why GB chose not to factor in the PS3 version's severe issues in their deliberations. When Skyrim works well (which, on the PC and 360, it absolutely does) the experience is incredible, and they wanted to reward that.

They openly acknowledged the PS3 version was fucked up and you absolutely should not play Skyrim if that's the only version you have access to. So they didn't flat-out ignore it or pretend it didn't exist. In fact they *specifically* say that they're awarding the PC and 360 versions.

I guarantee you if Skyrim ended up as, say, the Dragon Age 2 of the Elder Scrolls series (meaning the game itself was shoddy, bugs aside) they would have made a much bigger deal out of one of the versions being broken. But because when Skyrim works, the experience is unrivaled in such a great way that they probably felt it would have been more unfair to not acknowledge that.

I guess my point is I still vehemently disagree with those who think because the PS3 version is broken that no version of the game should be winning any accolades. Which, again, just comes down to personal ethics. In the time I've spent with the game (70+ hours and counting) the PC version most definitely earns all of the praise and accolades it's been receiving, it's one of the most memorable experiences I've had playing a game in years.

So they should have made a noted that "we would have given skyrim the number one spot but we can't because the PS3 version is fucked. So instead that game isn't on our list and won't be.

I dunno...riding around in a souped-up purple smart car and assassinating people with a land-shark while a ninja rides shotgun is pretty fun.

This is the ugliest screenshot I have seen in a few weeks. FFFFFUUUUUU

Hey cool now my Companions questline completely broke and I had to use the console to advance to the next quest by finding a guy I murdered and resurrecting him. Also the companions leaders have all vanished. An unrivaled experience indeed. Game of the year

The more of this game I play the more soured on it I become.

LA Noire on Top 10 and no Uncharted 3? LOL did Jeff even play Uncharted 3?

i honestly dont believe Bastion would even be on this list without the Kasavin factor
It would have still been in the top ten, but I don't think it would have placed as high, because without the link half of the crew wouldn't have played it like with Witcher 2.

LA Noire made it because Ryan loves noir and Vinny loved the face tech, while no one wanted to fight them over it.

At what price freedom? You murdered the guy. That was your choice, and sometimes choices have consequences. That makes a game more interesting, not broken. I wish you could do more of that in Skyrim. In Morrowind there was only one guy in the whole game you couldn't kill. In Skyrim, there are plenty I've tried that just go unconcious.

This just goes to show you that people will never be universally happy. People complain about not being able to kill certain people and that they should be able to even if it interferes with some quests, now someone is complaining about killing someone and not being able to do a quest he had.

I like how Patrick keeps repeating over and over again "the ship level had no business being in uncharted 3". Amy Henning herself admits that they create the set pieces and then build the narrative around it. Get over it, patrick.

Yeah I should have realized that killing unnamed "Silver Hand" leader in a random location in the northern mountains would have bit me in the ass and bugged the Companions to be in perpetual mourning and also ruined Whiterun because there's rubble and shit in front of a quarter of the houses around Jorrvaskar

I should have known looking for the Helm of Winterhold would have destroyed an entire questline my bad sorry

If you don't want your actions to have consequences, don't play RPGs. And absolutely don't play Dark Souls.

Not when the consequences are wholly unconnected with the action! That shit ain't supposed to happen!

Especially not in Skyrim where people were bitching about everyone being invincible or something

Yes I killed an unnamed boss character in a random dungeon and should be punished for it, I'll spare all Bandit Chiefs from now on just for you

That list enough for you, chief?

I'm playing though La Noire right now but is the grading system really that much of a bummer for people? Or is it something I havn't hit yet?

Agreed. Bastion shouldn't even be on that list. Actually there are few games that shouldn't be on that list.

Bastion is a great game and probably belongs on the list... but they should have just left it out of there GOTY awards. They didn't review it for a reason and that reason didnt magically go away come GOTY season.

I want to see some names. I'm curious if there are any top 10 games I missed playing.

Mario 3D Land, Deus Ex, Catherine, Bulletstorm, Ghost Trick, I could go on. I almost rarely say this about games, but L.A. Noire is one where I can't even fathom what people see in it.

There are over 200 essential NPCs in Skryim. Not counting children, there is one in Fallout New Vegas. You can see why people get pissed at it, especially since New Vegas' NPCs were far more intertwined with each other and with quests in general. If this was Oblivion, I probably wouldn't even be able to shank that asshole outside the Imperial City who wants slaughterfish scales to start the DB questline, he'd be too important for that in Bethesda's eyes.

And yeah having an entire quest chain break because you got a quest from a jarl in Winterhold and killed a boss at the end of a dungeon is kind of fucked up, but the experience man

Why? They listed and fought for the games they felt were the best of the year. Seems silly to leave out Bastion if they really feel it's better than other games.

I understand what you are saying, but from a gameplay perspective if the ps3 version is messed up, causing people not to be able to play it, then it doesn't deserve GOTY when Saints Row 3 plays fine on all platforms. Its not only ethical, its the truth. Bethesda should not be awarded for putting out a game that simply doesn't work on one of the platforms it was released on. Skyrim is a great game, but when some of the audience can not even barely play the game, that makes me question why you would award a developer for such blatant incompetence.

Not to mention their job in the fist place is to advise people on their purchasing decisions, at least that is what I use them for (along with the funny videos). My biggest problem though is if people look at the GOTY list and see skyrim, but only have a ps3, then that causes some major issues for the person in question does it not? GOTY is something that needs to be earned, skyrim did not do this because it is broken on a platform it was intended to be on (plus the developers themselves said the ps3 version would be just as good as the other two).

Super Mario 3d Land

agree completely, LA Noire was a one trick pony.
