Damn I think you just sold me the game

Lol im curious to read your impressions man

we have similar taste in games, and bother are overly critical haha

its a fantastic game man. Don't go in expecting huge ass titans and set pieces. Just think of it as a journey, adventure and you wont be dissapointed.

just keep your expectations in check :)

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
The visuals during the furnace level were amaaaaaazing. Although no part in the game matches the Gaia/Poseidon and Chronos level, Ascension is definitely better looking and more consistent than 3.

I think the final boss is definitely a contender for the highest marks in 3.

When Kratos is standing on a platform surround by fire, I admit that I let him stand there for awhile, silhouetted by the flames, and thought, "I'm a fucking badass." Haha.

And I agree with the above poster that the final battle was definitely epic in scale. It might actually be my favorite moment in any God of War game.

Finally got this! Didn't crack it open yet. Finishing up GOW3 on the hardest difficulty to get my final trophy before platinum. How's the Multiplayer so far?

This game has hard locked my PS3 twice now. I've not seen a Santa Monica game with this many technical issues.

I've seen a little visual hitch here and there before this, but that was the first time it actually flat-out locked up the console. It's a good-looking game, but I think it's definitely less polished than God of War III.

Just realized some things missing from Ascension:

- no Olympians
- no sex mini game
- no Minotaurs
- no wall-climbing
- no Hades
- no circle prompts

Not criticizing, just observing.

I've been holding off spending red orbs because I'm waiting to get a new weapon. Am I close to getting a new weapon?

I just got to Cistern

If you've received all four elemental additions to your blades, there are no more weapons that you'll receive. Items? Yes, but no real weapons.

Actually no minotaurs is probably one of my biggest criticism about the game.

minotaurs have always been a staple in god of war and not having them in ascension is such a disapointment

the feeling of tacking a minatour and putting it in a head lock whilst stabbing it in the throat was such an empowering feeling in god of war 3

I don't miss wall-climbing or circle prompts, but the absence of the rest of those things kinda made me a lot less interested in where the story was going. I mean, I had an absolute blast playing through the three main GoW games... This just felt a bit stale.

playing through the opening right now and its god of war alright :D always love the opening cause they are great.

not as good as 3's opening though but its still good.

The very last few shots of the opening level are pretty remarkable. I let some of it drag on just to take it in.

Holy fuck the challenge is way too hard. Longest I got hooked up on anything up till here was probably 20-25 minutes. One hour in and the farthest I've got is the first two wraiths after the centaur.

It definitely feels less polished than 3, but it's still extremely fun. Could become my favorite.

I can't believe they made a prequel about Kratos' oath to Ares that doesn't even depict that event properly or feature the god of war. In fact, the whole prequel aspect was a total letdown in that it squandered the opportunity to showcase long-dead characters like Ares, or the village oracle, etc

Edit: Oh, and Castor and Pollux in lieu of Artemis and Apollo? For real?

Okay, I think I just made it through the halfway point in this game...

GOWA is EASILY the best GOW game I've ever played. The graphics and set pieces are above and beyond anything I expected. FINALLY we get legitimate puzzles that require some intellect to solve this time. And the combat is so much more rewarding. You don't have to just fuzzy guard like in the previous games and fish for a counter hit. Now if you aim for a parry you have to commit or suffer the consequences. The secondary weapon mechanic is a huge welcome edition and the elemental customization of the blades of chaos also gives unique moves which can be accessed on the fly without a loading screen. This game is so far ticking ALL of the right boxes. Sucks that exams and deadlines have to take priority but I just can't wait to play more.

Pre GOWA players: "Needs moar puzzles, combat's too familiar"
Post GOWA players: "Too many puzzles, you changed the combat"

I swear to God SSM was fucked for trying to please people with this game.
Yes, this is what I've noticed with big franchises on GAF or most places really. People usually have many recommendations on what would make a specific franchise more enjoyable. Take uncharted for example people complained there was too much shooting, as if uncharted was some body count simulator, so of course there was a better balance of platforming and shooting in U3; yet there was a backlash as it relates to gameplay and pacing in that game by many.

As it relates to GOW-A, I can't count the number of times people compare GOW's combat as weak in comparison to NG or DMC, yet, when things are changed up and heightened in terms of depth or variety people still complain.

I'm inclined to believe you, in as much as people say they want variety or a change, maybe they really don't, most people dont like to adapt to something slightly different or just plain different for that matter. It really irks me that this generation of gamers are so whiny about anything at all, everything from not clearing a trial in one go to too much platforming. I can appreciate what SSM have done to spruce things up, making it challenging and at the same time offering more variety in locales (which I heard many complained about coming from GOW2 to GOW3 as well).

So. Fucking. Angry.

I was playing the SP game and was up to the
Foot of Apollo
. Then the game decides to freeze AS IT'S SAVING. When I reboot the PS3 and it goes through the bullshit about the console not shutting down correctly, then start the game up, my profile is gone. I don't even know if I want to fucking play anymore.

Hey, I dont want to sound insensitive. I know how frustrating such things can be, but when I read about your troubles, I gazed over to the left to put a name to the post and couldn't help but have a slight chuckle....what are the odds?

The graphics in this game are so fucking spectacular.

The motion blur is just ridiculous combined with the exceptional lighting and industry-best animation.

I don't see how people aren't completely in love with the combat. By far the most visually engaging of any title I've ever played. The second-by-second animations that transition into brutal kills is just like....violence porn for the eyes.

Let's get the bad out the way.

- Glitchy, not game breaking. Just not very Santa Monica like. PS3 too old?
- Audio is horrible. I have a 7.1 setup and had issues the entire game.
- What's with that massive framerate drop at the spot where you board a boat? There's nothing going on in that scene. lol
- Fuck that gauntlet. And i didn't even play it on hard yet.
- Too short.
- Doesn't a hold a candle to GOW3's epicness. Well for the most part. The final boss is fucking NUTS!

Now on to the great!

- Great adventure! Best in the series imo. The stage designs are fun and the puzzles weren't annoying.
- Best combat BUT not enough weapons. I missed the Hercules gloves, speed boots, and the bow so much. The combat is soooo good though. The new QTE mini games are nice too.
- Such a beautiful game. Loveee the colors. Something that was missing in GOW3.
- I like nice Kratos.
- Orkos and Amulet are AWESOME. But that god awful timer...is awful. Okay i get you don't want people cheesing with it but still. Why the fuck does the HUD disappear!? Pressing down L2 to check the timer is horrible. Fix that shit please.
Did i mention how fucking nuts that final boss is? Soooo good.

I know it looks like i'm more on the negative side, but i really loved the game. Great pacing, best combat in the series, good puzzles, and a decent story. The only thing that's really missing is more epic moments. But that's expected going from killing Gods and Titan to beating up Fury's..

GOW3>GOW:A>GOW:GoS>GOW2>GOW1>GOW:CoO

I know GOW3 gets a lot of shit on here (deservingly so) but some people really forget how amazing that game is for the most part.

The "bros before hos" thing is so overblown. Holy shit. Get a damn sense of humor.

I beat the trial on my first try...

Combat is the best by far in this game. I do miss what the other main weapons brought but the outcome here makes it seem justified. The only problem is that blocking is absolute rubbish. You have to stop all action and wait for an enemy to attack for it to even 'maybe' work. It's a complete flow breaker.

The difficulty IMO has been so overblown. Just make sure you're always looking around for hidden chests and upgrade accordingly. When I got to the trial, I had pretty much everything maxed.

There were some weird issues with the game like sound and glitches, but overall the people who are hating baffle me.

My problem with GoW3 is that outside of the epic titan battles being visually amazing, they really lack any sort of substance.

That, and there's like, 2 scenes in the game that can qualify. The rest of the game is way too dark, drab, and the combat isn't as fun as in GoW:A

Boss battles in GoW:A are some of the best in the series.

Will SSM release paid DLC for this game? I'm trying to decide whether I should buy this now or not.

There will be paid DLC down the line = no buy
No DLC = buy

I'm especially fearful of the addition of DLC that adds multiplayer trophies.

I'll never ever understand these kinds of people.

The Elephantaur is the new minotaur, SMS said they wanted to change him for this game, if you think about it the CS kill is similar to GoW3 instead on stabing him through the mouth you stab him in the head.

This opening gameplay 'level' is pretty fucking impressive. Get a new hobby if you think this isn't cutting it on a presentation/visuals level, at least.

I'm about three hours in, and I've noticed there's too many instances of dead silence in this game. For some reason it breaks the experience for me.

This is getting shelved until they nerf this cock-block they call a "trial." I don't have the time nor the patience to play games like I used to; maybe when I was 18 I would have thought this was real "test of my mettle." Now it's just shit game design.

Seriously.

SSM has mastered the art of fighting something HUGE, only to find out later that it's merely a small piece of something much bigger.

i got to the final monsters in the trial 2 times, the burrowers that throw shit, and died to them both times. now i can barely get past the first part again. i'm just tired and broken. you win for now, game. i guess.

Take some time off the trials and come back. I stopped for like 2 hours, came back, got it on my 4th or 5th try with 3/4 health. I love this game again.

Multiplayer is starting to click with me. I finally settled on Zeus after getting my ass kicked with the other gods. Anyone have any loadout suggestions? I'm rolling with hammer and gladiator set. I was using the relic that grants magic on death + martyrdom but switched to the one that gives magic for opening a certain number of chests. Not sure which one's better.

I'd be in the dick
Just got through the Trial really easily after taking a break since last night. Wasn't much of an issue this time. Going in with a plan of attack and not being sick helped.

OH MY GOD

Everything after the Trial is amazing. How they were able to do that on PS3 I'll never know. It even seemed to have a higher framerate than most of the game. Some of the best lighting I've ever seen and the scale was ridiculous.

The final boss looks really cool, but the actual mechanics of the boss itself are kinda disappointing. Re-used boss patterns didn't help, either.

It was fun to just smack it around after the Trial. It also was the biggest spectacle in the game so it hit harder than the big moments in the other games since there were fewer of them.

I love the sliding parts in the game. This was one of my favorite additions in Ghost of Sparta, and I'm glad the ones here are bigger and better.
